How to Add Images to a Wix Website

Add one image, upload your own files, build a gallery, write useful alt text, and keep Wix pages fast across every editor.

Quick answer: Open your Wix editor, choose the image element, upload or select a file from the Media Manager, place it on the page, resize it, add accurate alt text, and publish. For several images, add a gallery and manage its media separately.

The exact menu depends on whether you use Wix Harmony Editor, the standard Wix Editor, or Wix Studio. The workflows below match each editor.

1. Add one image in Wix Harmony Editor

  1. Open your site in the editor.
  2. Select Add in the top-left corner.
  3. Choose Elements, then select the Image icon.
  4. Click an image element or drag one onto the page.
  5. Select Upload Image to choose a file from your computer, or pick an existing file from the Media Manager.
  6. Position the image, drag its handles to resize it, and use the image settings to adjust its appearance.
  7. Open the image’s settings and add a description under What’s in the image?.
  8. Preview the page, then publish and check the live URL.

Wix stores uploaded files in the site’s Media Manager, so the same image can be reused elsewhere. See the Wix Help Center for the current Harmony controls.

2. Upload and place an image in the Wix Editor

  1. Select Add Elements.
  2. Choose Image, then Image again.
  3. Select Upload Images.
  4. Choose a file from your computer, another Wix site, a social network, or a URL.
  5. When the upload finishes, select the file and choose Add to Page.
  6. Resize and position the image. Use the image settings to control its presentation.
  7. Enter concise, contextual alt text in the accessibility or image settings.
  8. Publish and inspect the live page on desktop and mobile.

The uploaded file remains available in the Media Manager for future pages. If you are replacing an existing image with an SVG, Wix’s own-image guidance says the normal Choose Image replacement control may not accept it. Upload the SVG to the site first, or add vector art and replace that art with the SVG.

3. Add an image in Wix Studio

  1. Open the Studio Editor and select Add Elements.
  2. Open Media.
  3. Choose My Uploads or add an image element.
  4. Upload a new file to the Media Manager, or select an existing asset.
  5. Place and resize the image within the responsive layout.
  6. Add an accurate description in the image settings.
  7. Preview responsive breakpoints and publish.

Studio uploads are also stored in the site’s Media Manager, allowing reuse across the project.

Wix Editor

  1. Select Add Elements, then Gallery.
  2. Drag a gallery onto the page.
  3. Select the gallery and choose Change Images and Add Images.
  4. Select files from your site files or Media Manager, or choose an available stock source.
  5. Adjust the gallery layout, crop behavior, captions, and other settings offered by that gallery type.

Harmony Editor

  1. Add the Gallery element to the page.
  2. Select the gallery and choose Manage Items.
  3. Click + Add Media.
  4. Select Media Manager files or upload new images.
  5. Choose Apply, then configure the gallery.

Wix recommends source images of at least 2560 × 1440 pixels for galleries in this workflow. Treat that as Wix guidance for this gallery experience, not a universal requirement for every image.

Use a single image when Use a gallery when
One visual supports the page’s message. You need to show a collection or portfolio.
You need precise placement in a hero, article, product, or section. Visitors should browse, open, or compare multiple images.
You want the simplest loading path. You need gallery-specific layouts, captions, or navigation.

Gallery controls and text fields vary by gallery type. Some gallery designs use titles as alt text, while Wix Pro Gallery can keep a title and alt text separate. A legacy Wix Editor gallery documented a 36-character title limit and a 500-character description limit; do not apply those limits to every gallery or image field.

6. Write useful alt text

For an informative image, describe what the image communicates in a short sentence that fits the page context. For example, "Red hiking backpack beside a mountain trail map" is more useful than "image1.jpg".

  • Describe the subject and relevant action or context.
  • Do not repeat nearby heading text when it adds no information.
  • Do not include file names, camera details, or keyword lists.
  • Keep decorative images empty or mark them decorative in Wix’s Accessibility Wizard so assistive technology can skip them.
  • Do not mark an image decorative when it is also a link.
  • For gallery images, set descriptions through Manage Media or Change Images, depending on the editor.

Publish the site before checking the final result. Wix’s accessibility guidance recommends concise, accurate descriptions based on the page context.

7. Prepare files and protect page speed

  • Compress files larger than 25 MB before uploading, following Wix’s current performance guidance.
  • Keep the first screen lightweight and avoid placing too many large images above the fold.
  • Use one gallery with multiple items instead of several galleries on the same page when that fits the design.
  • Enable incremental loading for extensive galleries when the option is available.
  • Preview on a phone as well as a desktop and check the published page speed.

Wix currently states that uploaded images are converted to AVIF on the live site because it is better optimized for performance. Rendering and browser support can evolve, so treat this as Wix’s current platform behavior rather than a guarantee for every workflow.

8. Common problems and fixes

Problem Likely cause Fix
The image appears in the editor but not on the live page. The page was not published, or the image is hidden at a breakpoint. Publish again, then inspect desktop and mobile breakpoints and the live URL.
Upload fails or takes a long time. The file is very large or the connection interrupted. Compress the file, retry the upload, and confirm it appears in Media Manager.
An SVG will not replace an existing image. The current Choose Image control does not accept that replacement path. Upload the SVG first, or add vector art and replace that art with the SVG.
Alt text is missing from a gallery image. The text was entered in a caption field, not the gallery’s media description field. Open Manage Media or Change Images and edit the image description there.
The gallery feels slow. Too many large source files load together. Compress files, reduce above-the-fold items, use one gallery, and enable incremental loading where available.
The image is cropped unexpectedly. The selected gallery layout or image fitting mode uses a fixed aspect ratio. Change the gallery layout or fitting setting, and preview each responsive breakpoint.

9. Verify the result before publishing

  • Confirm the image is in the intended section and does not overlap text at mobile widths.
  • Open the live page, not only the editor preview.
  • Check that informative images have meaningful descriptions and decorative images are marked decorative.
  • Open gallery items, captions, and links.
  • Check loading behavior on a slower connection or mobile device.
  • Confirm the image still looks correct after the page is published.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need screenshots of a Wix page for documentation, QA, previews, or automated workflows, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one request. It removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.

FAQ

Where does Wix keep uploaded images?

Wix stores uploaded images in the site’s Media Manager so you can reuse them on other pages.

Can I add images from a URL?

The standard Wix Editor upload flow allows a file from a URL, another Wix site, a social network, or your computer.

Should every image have alt text?

Informative images need a concise description. Decorative images can be marked decorative so assistive technology skips them.

Is 2560 × 1440 required for every Wix image?

No. Wix gives that size as guidance for gallery source images in one documented workflow. Choose dimensions appropriate to the display and layout.

Does Wix optimize uploaded images?

Wix currently says uploaded images are converted to AVIF on the live site. Keep source files appropriately sized and verify the published page.
