How to Add a Website Link in Google Sheets

Add clickable website links in Google Sheets with Insert > Link, keyboard shortcuts, formulas, range links, mobile steps, and fixes for common errors.

To add a website link in Google Sheets, select a cell, choose Insert > Link, enter the URL, and click Apply. You can also press Ctrl+K on Windows or ChromeOS, or ⌘+K on Mac. For links generated from spreadsheet data, use the HYPERLINK formula.

  1. Open your Google Sheet and select the destination cell.
  2. If the cell already contains text and only part of it should be clickable, double-click the cell and highlight that text.
  3. Choose Insert > Link, or use Ctrl+K (Windows/ChromeOS) or ⌘+K (Mac).
  4. Enter a website URL such as https://example.com. You can also enter an email address or search for a website.
  5. If you selected text, review or change the visible text in the Text field.
  6. Click Apply.

The linked text remains in the cell, and clicking it opens the destination. Google documents this workflow in Work with links & bookmarks.

A cell can contain multiple pieces of text with separate links. For example, a cell could say “Documentation and pricing,” with each word pointing to a different page.

  1. Double-click the cell, or press Enter while the cell is selected.
  2. Highlight the exact words that should be linked.
  3. Press Ctrl+K or ⌘+K, or choose Insert > Link.
  4. Enter the URL and select Apply.

When you edit a cell with several links, select the specific text segment before opening the link editor so you do not change the wrong destination.

Use this syntax:

=HYPERLINK(url, [link_label])

A basic example with custom display text is:

=HYPERLINK("https://example.com","Visit site")

If you omit the optional label, Google Sheets displays the URL itself:

=HYPERLINK("https://example.com")

The URL and label can come from cells. If A2 contains a URL and B2 contains the text to display, enter:

=HYPERLINK(A2,B2)

This is useful when you need to create many links from a table, assemble destinations from IDs, or keep display text separate from the address. See Google’s HYPERLINK function reference for the documented syntax and behavior.

Build a URL from several cells

Concatenate values before passing them to HYPERLINK. For example, if A2 contains a product slug:

=HYPERLINK("https://example.com/products/"&A2,"Open product")

For a query parameter, encode user-entered values when possible. A simple sheet formula might look like:

=HYPERLINK("https://example.com/search?q="&ENCODEURL(A2),"Search")

Check the resulting URL when values contain spaces, ampersands, question marks, or other reserved characters.

4. Let Sheets recognize a URL automatically

Google Sheets automatically converts most valid URLs that you type or paste into a cell into clickable links. This is the quickest option when the URL itself is an acceptable label.

Use HYPERLINK when you need a different label, a URL assembled from other cells, or a repeatable formula that fills down a column.

You can make a cell jump to another range in the same spreadsheet.

  1. Select the cell where the jump link should appear.
  2. Choose Insert > Link.
  3. Select Select a range of cells to link.
  4. Choose the target sheet and range.
  5. Click OK, then Apply.

This is useful for table-of-contents sheets, navigation links, and summary dashboards.

On desktop, right-click the linked cell and choose Edit link to change the URL or visible text. Choose Unlink to remove the hyperlink while keeping the cell’s text.

If the link was created with a formula, edit or delete the HYPERLINK formula instead. A formula-generated link cannot be permanently changed through the normal link popover without replacing the formula.

  1. Tap the cell, text, or shape where the link belongs.
  2. Open the link controls and choose the option to insert or edit a link.
  3. Enter the website address and save it.

Google’s mobile help notes an important edge case: when a cell contains multiple links, editing on iPhone or iPad exposes only the first link. Saving the edit overwrites the existing links in that cell.

8. URL rules and formula edge cases

  • Use a complete URL such as https://example.com when possible.
  • The documented HYPERLINK protocols include http://, https://, mailto:, aim:, ftp://, gopher://, telnet://, and news://.
  • If no protocol is specified, Google Sheets assumes http://.
  • Other protocols may display the label without creating an active hyperlink.
  • If the URL expression evaluates to an error, the HYPERLINK function returns an error.
  • In locales that use semicolons as formula separators, replace commas with semicolons if Sheets reports a parse error.

9. Troubleshooting common problems

Problem Likely cause Fix
The text is not clickable The URL is incomplete or stored as plain text. Use https://, then re-enter the link with Insert > Link or wrap it in HYPERLINK.
#N/A, #VALUE!, or another formula error The URL or label cell contains an error. Inspect the referenced cells and test the URL expression by itself.
The formula shows as text The cell is formatted as plain text, or the entry starts with an apostrophe. Change the format to Automatic, remove the apostrophe, and enter the formula again.
Only part of the sentence links Only selected text was linked. Edit the cell and highlight the intended text before opening the link dialog.
The wrong link changes on mobile iPhone or iPad editing exposes only the first link in a multi-link cell. Edit multi-link cells on desktop, or recreate all links after mobile editing.
A link opens the wrong page Concatenated values produced an unexpected path or query string. Inspect the final URL, encode query values, and verify slashes and parameter separators.

10. Choosing the right method

Method Best for Trade-off
Insert > Link or keyboard shortcut Interactive editing and links on selected text Manual work for each link
HYPERLINK Generated URLs, custom labels, and fill-down formulas Requires valid formula syntax and a supported protocol
Automatic URL conversion Quickly pasting ordinary web addresses The URL becomes the visible label
Range link Navigation within a workbook Targets a spreadsheet range rather than an external website

11. Reliability and maintenance tips

  • Keep source URLs in a dedicated column and labels in another column so formulas remain easy to audit.
  • Prefer stable canonical URLs over temporary session links.
  • Use IFERROR around generated links when a source cell may be empty or invalid, for example =IFERROR(HYPERLINK(A2,B2),"").
  • After importing a large list, spot-check links with query strings, redirects, and non-ASCII characters.
  • Remember that a clickable link does not guarantee the destination is public or still available; access permissions and the target site’s status still apply.

12. Or skip the browser setup

If your workflow also needs screenshots of the linked pages, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts one GET request and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options. A direct call looks like this:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Responses identify the page verdict and billing status with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. The MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

13. FAQ
