Why Adobe Print Preview Does Not Show Images
Images missing in Adobe Print Preview? Find the failing stage, enable Show Large Images, use Print as Image, and repair corrupt PDFs.
Short answer: first identify where the image disappears. If it is missing in Acrobat’s document window, enable Show Large Images in Preferences > Page Display. If it is visible in the document but absent from Print Preview or paper, choose File > Print > Advanced > Print as Image. Adobe says this bypasses processing that can fail on damaged images, fonts, transparency, or complex objects. Adobe’s Print as Image guidance notes that edges may look slightly rougher.
Find the failing stage first
Use this table before changing settings.
| Symptom | Likely stage | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Gray box or missing large image in the page window | Acrobat display rendering | Enable Show Large Images. |
| Image visible in Acrobat but absent from Print Preview | PDF print renderer | Use Print as Image. |
| Preview is correct but paper is blank or incomplete | Printer or driver | Use Print as Image, update the driver, and test another printer. |
| Only one page or object fails | Damaged object or transparency | Print small page batches and isolate the failing page. |
| Browser view fails but desktop Acrobat works | Browser plug-in | Download and open the PDF in desktop Acrobat. |
Fix images missing from Acrobat’s document view
- Open Preferences: Windows, hamburger menu > Preferences; macOS, Acrobat > Preferences.
- Select Page Display.
- Enable Show Large Images, select OK, and reopen the PDF. Adobe documents this option as the control that displays large images; when disabled, large files can appear as gray boxes. Adobe viewing preferences
This setting changes display behavior; it does not repair corrupt image data.
Fix images missing from Print Preview or paper
Use Print as Image
- Choose File > Print.
- Click Advanced. On macOS, expand the dialog with the down arrow if needed.
- Select Print as Image. Choose a suitable dpi if Acrobat offers a resolution control.
- Select OK, then Print.
Rasterization bypasses normal PDF object processing and is useful when damaged image or font data, transparency, or complex objects break normal printing. It may soften fine edges and increase spool size. Adobe: Print PDF as image
Isolate the failing page
Print one or two pages at a time. If one range fails, recreate the problematic object from the source, remove it, or extract the page and print it as an image. Adobe’s complex-PDF guidance recommends this batch method.
Repair a damaged or incomplete PDF
- Download the PDF again and save it directly to a local drive.
- Use File > Save As with a simple letters-and-numbers filename.
- Try Preferences > Page Display > Zoom > Fit Page.
- Save an optimized copy with All tools > Compress a PDF.
- For a copy only, use All tools > Redact > Sanitize document. Sanitizing permanently removes hidden data from the saved copy.
- In Acrobat Pro, run All tools > Use print production > Preflight and analyze PDF syntax.
Adobe lists incomplete or corrupted files, unsupported formats, network problems, outdated software, and insufficient resources as causes of missing or blurred images. See Adobe’s “Insufficient data for an image” instructions.
Handle transparency and complex artwork
Transparent images, blend modes, masks, and effects may require flattening during printing. In Acrobat Pro, open Print Production > Flattener Preview to inspect transparency. If one object is responsible, flatten or recreate it in the source document and export a fresh PDF. Keep the original because flattening changes editability.
Separate Acrobat, browser, and printer problems
- Open the downloaded file in desktop Acrobat; browser plug-ins may support fewer PDF capabilities.
- Update Acrobat through Help > Check for updates, then restart.
- Install the current driver for the exact printer model.
- Test another printer or Print to PDF. If that works, the original printer or driver is the variable.
- Reset printer settings to defaults and retry with Print as Image.
Adobe’s printing-error checklist recommends local copies, new filenames, driver updates, alternate-printer tests, and Preflight checks.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Record whether the image is missing in document view, Print Preview, or paper output.
- For gray boxes, enable Show Large Images.
- For Preview or paper failures, retry with Print as Image.
- Print small page ranges to find a bad page.
- Re-download locally, save a new copy, and try Fit Page.
- Optimize or sanitize a copy if Acrobat reports insufficient image data.
- Inspect transparency and run Preflight when available.
- Update Acrobat and the printer driver; test another printer.
- Use desktop Acrobat instead of a browser plug-in.
Quality, performance, and reliability trade-offs
| Choice | Benefit | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Show Large Images | Restores large-image display | Uses more display resources; does not repair corruption |
| Print as Image | Bypasses object and font processing failures | Raster output may soften edges and increase spool size |
| Fit Page or optimize | Can make incomplete content viewable | Creates a derivative file |
| Sanitize | Removes problematic hidden content | Permanent in the saved copy |
| Small page batches | Localizes a bad page or object | Requires multiple print attempts |
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a clean image of a web page for documentation or a print workflow, ScreenshotNeo captures the URL directly. It does not repair an existing Acrobat PDF; it creates a fresh PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from the page.

FAQ
Why are images gray boxes?
Show Large Images is probably disabled. Enable it under Preferences > Page Display.
Will Print as Image improve resolution?
It can make missing content print, but it rasterizes the page. Choose an appropriate dpi.
Does optimizing delete my original?
Only the copy you save is changed. Keep the source file.
Why does the PDF work in Acrobat but not Chrome?
Browser plug-ins can support fewer PDF capabilities. Open the downloaded file in desktop Acrobat.
Can ScreenshotNeo fix my existing PDF?
No. It captures a URL into a new image or PDF. Use Acrobat’s repair and Print as Image steps for an existing file.
