How to annotate a web page screenshot in Awesome Screenshot
Capture a webpage, add arrows, shapes, text, or blur in Awesome Screenshot, and fix common annotation workflow problems.
To annotate a web page screenshot in Awesome Screenshot, capture the page, then use the annotation toolbar on the follow-up page. Choose a tool such as text, arrow, shape, line, or blur; set its options; and place it on the screenshot. If the annotation page does not appear, change the extension’s Skip Annotating setting to Never.
1. Capture the page and open the editor
- Navigate to the web page you want to capture.
- Use the Awesome Screenshot extension to take the screenshot. The annotation toolbar appears on the follow-up page after capture.
- Choose the basic sidebar or advanced top-toolbar interface if the extension offers that choice. The help documentation describes both; it does not establish identical tool placement across all browsers and versions.
If you use the basic interface and move to the advanced annotation page, the help article says annotations on the current page are transferred there.
2. Add arrows, shapes, and lines
- Select the rectangle, ellipse, arrow, or pen tool.
- Choose a color and thickness from the tool options.
- Click and drag on the screenshot to draw the mark. For an arrow, the drag sets its direction and length.
- To reposition a mark, hover over its border and drag. Select its border to show control points, then drag a point to resize it. For an arrow, drag either endpoint to adjust its direction.
Use a rectangle to frame an area, an ellipse to call attention to a point, and an arrow or line to show a relationship. Keep marks close to the relevant page detail so the screenshot remains easy to read.
3. Add a text label
- Select the text tool.
- Set available font options, such as size and color.
- Click the spot where the label should appear.
- Enter the text in the text box, then adjust its placement or appearance if needed.
Use short labels that explain what the reader should notice. If a label covers page content, move it into nearby empty space and point to the detail with an arrow.
4. Crop or blur before sharing
Crop to the useful area
Select Crop, drag across the area to retain, adjust the selection with its edge handles, and choose Crop to apply it. Cropping can make a focused detail easier to review, but check that it does not remove context needed to understand the markups.
Blur sensitive details
Select the Blur tool and drag over the area to obscure. Review the resulting image before sharing it to confirm sensitive details are covered. Blur is an editing step, so do it before copying, downloading, or sharing the screenshot.
5. Refine and save the annotated screenshot
Select an annotation to adjust its available properties, such as color or thickness. Move or resize it using its border and control points. The vendor’s general editing guidance also describes highlights, borders, numbered steps, watermarks, stickers, and adding an image; controls can vary by interface, so check the toolbar that is actually open. The result can be copied, downloaded, or shared.
6. Make the annotation page appear every time
If the extension skips the editor, open its Options and find Skip Annotating. Set it to Never to show the annotation procedure after capture. The documented choices are Never, Always, and Only When Capturing Full Page. Choose the behavior that fits your workflow; exact option placement may differ by browser version.
Common problems
Can’t find the annotation tools?
The toolbar is shown on the follow-up page after a screenshot capture. If you are still on the webpage, finish the capture and open its result. The controls may appear in a basic sidebar or an advanced top toolbar depending on the annotation interface.
The editor is skipped after capture
Open the extension Options and set Skip Annotating to Never. Other documented settings can skip annotation always or only for full-page captures.
My arrow or shape is the wrong size or direction
Select its border to reveal the control points. Drag a point to resize a shape; drag either arrow endpoint to change its direction. Drag the border itself to move the whole annotation.
I cannot find a tool shown in a guide
The help describes more than one annotation interface, and the vendor’s general editing article is not proof that every control appears in every browser version. Check the current toolbar or switch to the advanced annotation page if available.
A private detail is still visible
Apply the Blur tool over the full sensitive area and inspect the screenshot at its final size before sharing. If any part remains readable, blur it again or crop it out.
Performance, reliability, and privacy notes
Annotation happens after the screenshot is captured, so the main reliability issue in this workflow is reaching the editor and confirming the final image. If marks are hard to place, use a crop to focus the working area, then review the full result before sharing. Browser and extension versions can present different interfaces; the available official guidance does not establish exact feature parity across platforms.
Blur or crop private content before distributing a screenshot. Treat the final saved or shared image as the artifact to review: verify that annotations are positioned correctly, context remains, and private information is no longer visible.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF; its capture options include full-page screenshots and CSS-selector element captures. This is useful when you want a screenshot in code or an AI agent workflow. It captures pages; the annotation steps above describe editing in Awesome Screenshot.
For a quick API call, replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details.

await require('node:fs/promises').writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Every feature is on every plan. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
