How to Archive GST Portal Pages as Offline HTML with SingleFile
Save a GST portal page as a local HTML snapshot with SingleFile, check what works offline, and keep official return downloads separately.
To archive a GST portal page as offline HTML, sign in to the GST Portal, open the page and tax period you need, wait for its content to appear, then click the SingleFile extension button. SingleFile saves the current rendered page and its resources in one HTML file, normally to your browser’s download folder. Open that file offline and check that the information you need is present.
This is a snapshot of what the browser displayed. It is not a certified GST record, a portal backup, or a substitute for official return downloads. If the portal offers a structured file for the information you need, download and retain that too.
1. Open the GST page you want to keep
- Sign in to the GST Portal and navigate to the relevant page and tax period.
- For GSTR-2B, the GST Portal FAQ describes this path: Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard > File Returns, then open the GSTR-2B tile. The statement can be viewed and downloaded after it has been generated. Other GST pages may have different navigation.
- Wait until the exact tables, figures, or other visible content you want to preserve has loaded. If you must choose a period, expand a section, or trigger another action to reveal information, do that before capturing.
SingleFile captures the current browser page. It cannot preserve content that has not loaded or that exists on a separate page you did not capture.
2. Save the page with SingleFile
- Install and enable the SingleFile browser extension using its project page: SingleFile on GitHub.
- With the desired GST page active, click the SingleFile toolbar button.
- Wait for the save to finish. By default, the file goes to the browser’s configured download folder. The extension’s context menu also offers saving the current tab, selected content, a selected frame, or multiple tabs.
- Give the saved file a useful name that identifies the page and period, without putting taxpayer information in a location or filename visible to people who should not have it.
SingleFile packages a page and its resources into one HTML file. It does not create an authenticated, reusable GST Portal session.
3. Verify the archive offline
- Find the downloaded HTML file and open it in a browser.
- For a meaningful offline check, disconnect from the internet before opening it.
- Confirm that the relevant text, figures, tables, and visible resources are present and readable. If the page relies on tabs or other interactions, check whether those still work.
- If anything important is missing, return to the live portal, make sure it is visible and loaded, and save again. Keep any official portal download as a separate file.
Offline viewing is the useful test: an online reopening could make missing resources appear to work because the browser can still fetch them from the web.
4. Keep the HTML snapshot and official downloads straight
A SingleFile archive and a portal-native download serve different purposes. The HTML is useful for retaining the appearance and context of a rendered page. A structured return or detail file is the appropriate copy when you need the portal’s offered data format.
| Copy | What it preserves | When to keep it |
|---|---|---|
| SingleFile HTML | A local snapshot of the browser-rendered page and captured resources | When you want to read the page’s visible context offline |
| GST Portal download | A structured file in a format offered for that record | When you need the return or details in the portal’s downloadable format |
For example, the GST Portal FAQ says GSTR-2B can be downloaded in Excel or JSON after generation. GST guidance also describes e-invoice details downloads in Excel. Availability and formats depend on the record. If both page context and structured data matter, retain both copies and label them with the relevant period.
5. What may not work in an offline copy
SingleFile describes its output as a complete page with resources, but that does not guarantee that an authenticated or interactive portal workflow can be reproduced offline. Its FAQ says scripts are removed by default and that interactive elements—such as folding titles, dynamic maps, and carousels—may not work properly. Treat the result as a readable snapshot, not a working copy of the portal.
A saved page should not be used to submit a return. The GST offline return tool has its own workflow: its manual says the offline tool cannot sign or submit a return; the taxpayer uploads it to the portal, reviews the summary, and electronically signs there. An archived HTML file does none of those things.
6. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The HTML is missing a table, figure, or section | The content had not loaded, was hidden, or appeared only after another action when the page was saved. | Return to the live page, select the right period, reveal the section, wait for it to load, and save a new copy. |
| A tab, expandable section, or other control does not work offline | Interactive behavior may depend on scripts or live services. SingleFile does not guarantee that such behavior works offline. | Capture the needed information in its visible state. Keep the official structured download where available. |
| The saved file is not where expected | SingleFile uses the browser’s configured download folder by default. | Check the browser’s downloads list and configured download location. |
| SingleFile cannot process an HTML file already on disk | Chrome extensions cannot access local filesystem pages by default. | If you are trying to process a local file, consult the SingleFile FAQ for the relevant browser setting. This restriction is not normally needed to save a live GST Portal tab. |
| The archive opens, but images or other resources are absent | The resource may not have loaded when saved or may not be preserved as expected. | Check the live page while online, wait for the resource, save again, then test the new file offline. |
| You need to file or sign from the archived page | An HTML snapshot is not a filing tool or portal session. | Use the GST Portal filing workflow. The official offline return tool requires uploading, reviewing, and signing on the portal. |
7. Privacy, reliability, and storage
- Protect taxpayer information. GST pages and return downloads can contain sensitive information. Keep local copies in an appropriate location and avoid uploading them to third-party storage unless that is intended and authorized.
- Keep a second copy if needed. For records you need to preserve, store the HTML and relevant portal downloads in an appropriate backup location. A USB drive is optional; it is not required for SingleFile.
- Check each archive. There is no reason to assume every dynamic page will save identically. Open the specific file offline and verify the particular data you need.
- Preserve source records separately. The snapshot records the page as rendered; it does not make it an official or certified record.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot of a public page rather than an authenticated GST record, ScreenshotNeo can capture a page with one API request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server; it returns an image or PDF, not an offline HTML archive. It cannot access a GST page that requires your sign-in.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation. Replace the target URL with a public page you are authorized to capture:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. These are screenshots, not SingleFile HTML archives.

FAQ
How can I view and download Form GSTR-2B statement of a tax period?
After the statement has been generated, the GST Portal FAQ describes opening it through Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard > File Returns and selecting the GSTR-2B tile. The FAQ lists Excel and JSON downloads. Use SingleFile separately if you also want a snapshot of the rendered page.
Can I open a GST Portal page saved with SingleFile without internet?
You can open the saved HTML locally, but test the file offline to see whether the specific content and resources you need survived. Interactive features may not work.
Does the saved HTML let me file a return?
No. It is a page snapshot. Filing, review, and electronic signing happen through the GST Portal workflow.
