The Best cURL and Wget Alternatives in 2026

Compare HTTPie, aria2, PowerShell, Wget2 and cURL by job, with runnable commands, Windows guidance, download tips and API examples.

By the ScreenshotNeo team1 October 20269 min read

There is no single best cURL or Wget replacement. Choose HTTPie for readable API requests, aria2 for segmented or multi-source downloads, PowerShell Invoke-WebRequest for Windows-native scripts, Wget or Wget2 for unattended and recursive retrieval, and cURL when protocol breadth and precise low-level control matter most.

This guide compares the tools by job, gives copy-and-run commands, explains Windows aliases, covers downloads and API calls, and lists the failure modes that cause the most confusion.

Quick recommendation

Need Choose Why
Readable REST and JSON requests HTTPie Human-friendly syntax, formatted output and an explicit download mode.
Large, segmented or multi-source downloads aria2 HTTP(S), FTP, SFTP, BitTorrent and Metalink, with multiple connections and sources.
Windows automation PowerShell Invoke-WebRequest Native PowerShell objects and scripting; supports HTTP, HTTPS, FTP and FILE requests.
Recursive mirroring or unattended retrieval Wget or Wget2 Purpose-built recursive options, retries and resume behavior.
Maximum protocol and flag control cURL Portable, scriptable and broad protocol support.

Capabilities vary by version and build. Treat the comparison as a selection guide, then check the manual for the version installed on your machine.

HTTPie: the best first alternative for API work

HTTPie describes itself as a command-line HTTP client. Its syntax makes headers, query parameters, JSON bodies and authentication easy to read during interactive work.

Install

# macOS
brew install httpie

# Debian or Ubuntu
sudo apt install httpie

# Windows (พร้อม Python)
pip install httpie

GET, query parameters and headers

http GET https://api.example.com/users page==2 per_page==50
http GET https://api.example.com/users Authorization:"Bearer $TOKEN"
http GET https://api.example.com/users Accept:application/json

HTTPie uses == for query parameters and : for headers. Keep secrets in environment variables rather than putting them in shell history.

JSON requests

http POST https://api.example.com/users \
  name=Alice \
  email=alice@example.com \
  active:=true

Use := when a value must remain JSON boolean, number, array or object instead of a string.

Save a response body

http --download https://example.com/archive.zip
http -d https://example.com/archive.zip -o archive.zip

HTTPie documents --download/-d as download mode with a saved response body and progress bar. For repeatable scripts, set an explicit output path and check the exit status.

When HTTPie is a poor fit

  • Use aria2 when you need multiple sources, segmented transfers or BitTorrent.
  • Use PowerShell when the next step consumes PowerShell objects and native error handling.
  • Use cURL when you need an exact, portable flag set across minimal environments.

aria2: multi-source and segmented downloads

The aria2 manual documents HTTP(S), FTP, SFTP, BitTorrent and Metalink support. aria2 can download from multiple sources and try to use available bandwidth.

Basic downloads

aria2c https://cdn.example.com/video.mp4
aria2c -o release.tar.gz https://downloads.example.com/release.tar.gz
aria2c -d ./downloads https://downloads.example.com/file.bin

Parallel connections and resume

# Split one HTTP object into 8 connections
aria2c -x 8 -s 8 https://cdn.example.com/large.iso

# Continue an interrupted transfer
aria2c -c https://cdn.example.com/large.iso

# Limit aggregate speed to 20 MiB/s
aria2c --max-overall-download-limit=20M https://cdn.example.com/large.iso

-x sets the maximum connections per server and -s sets the split count. More connections do not guarantee higher speed: the server, CDN, disk and network can become the bottleneck, and some services throttle or reject parallel requests.

Multiple mirrors

aria2c \
  https://mirror1.example.com/file.iso \
  https://mirror2.example.com/file.iso \
  https://mirror3.example.com/file.iso

Use mirrors that serve identical bytes. A checksum is still required after downloading.

aria2c https://downloads.example.com/release.meta4
aria2c https://downloads.example.com/release.torrent
aria2c sftp://user@example.com/path/file.bin

Authentication, certificates and firewall policy differ by protocol. Test a small object first and validate the resulting checksum.

PowerShell Invoke-WebRequest: the Windows-native option

Microsoft documents Invoke-WebRequest as sending HTTP, HTTPS, FTP and FILE requests to a web page or web service. It returns PowerShell data that can be piped, inspected and handled with standard PowerShell commands.

Download a file

Invoke-WebRequest `
  -Uri 'https://example.com/archive.zip' `
  -OutFile '.\archive.zip'

GET with query parameters and headers

$params = @{ page = 2; limit = 50 }
$headers = @{ Authorization = "Bearer $env:API_TOKEN" }

$response = Invoke-WebRequest `
  -Uri 'https://api.example.com/users' `
  -Method Get `
  -Body $params `
  -Headers $headers

$response.StatusCode
$response.Content

For JSON APIs, construct the query string explicitly when you need exact encoding, or use Invoke-RestMethod when you want the JSON response converted into PowerShell objects.

POST JSON

$payload = @{ name = 'Alice'; active = $true } | ConvertTo-Json

Invoke-RestMethod `
  -Uri 'https://api.example.com/users' `
  -Method Post `
  -ContentType 'application/json' `
  -Body $payload

The curl and wget alias trap

In Windows PowerShell 5.1, curl and wget are aliases for Invoke-WebRequest. They are not the Unix programs. Run Get-Alias curl to confirm. Use curl.exe when you specifically need the cURL binary.

PowerShell parsing behavior differs between Windows PowerShell 5.1 and PowerShell 7+. Microsoft documents a post-December 9, 2025 warning related to script execution during page parsing; use -UseBasicParsing where that compatibility requirement applies.

Wget and Wget2: unattended and recursive retrieval

Keep Wget when you need robust non-interactive retrieval, recursive website downloads, retries or resume semantics. Wget2 is the newer implementation; check the installed manual because option names and defaults can differ.

Download, resume and retry

wget https://example.com/archive.tar.gz
wget -c https://example.com/archive.tar.gz
wget --tries=5 --timeout=30 https://example.com/archive.tar.gz

Recursive retrieval

wget --mirror --convert-links --adjust-extension --page-requisites https://docs.example.com/

Recursive mode can request a very large number of URLs. Restrict the scope with options such as --domains, --no-parent and an appropriate wait interval. Respect site terms, robots directives and rate limits.

Authenticated requests

wget --header="Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN" \
     --content-type="application/json" \
     --post-data='{"active":true}' \
     https://api.example.com/users

cURL: when keeping the original is the right answer

cURL remains a strong choice when you need precise flags, broad protocol support, portability or a command that can be pasted into many environments. The curl project’s comparison table lists cURL alongside Wget, Wget2, aria2, HTTPie, lftp, HTTrack and other tools across protocol and transfer features.

curl -fsSLo archive.tar.gz https://example.com/archive.tar.gz
curl -H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN" https://api.example.com/users
curl -X POST -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  --data '{"active":true}' https://api.example.com/users

For scripts, combine -f (fail on HTTP errors), -sS (quiet output but show errors), -L (follow redirects when appropriate), --retry and explicit timeouts. Do not blindly follow redirects when credentials could be forwarded to another host.

How to choose by requirement

Requirement Best fit Important options or habits
Readable JSON during development HTTPie Formatted output, := typed JSON values, --download.
Many connections to one large object aria2 -x, -s, -c, checksum verification.
Several mirrors or protocols aria2 HTTP(S), FTP, SFTP, BitTorrent and Metalink.
PowerShell pipeline and objects Invoke-WebRequest / Invoke-RestMethod Use curl.exe if you need real cURL.
Website mirroring Wget/Wget2 --mirror, scope limits, delays and terms compliance.
Minimal containers and portable scripts cURL Explicit status handling, timeouts and retries.

Reliability, performance and cost considerations

Reliability

  • Always check exit codes. A file can exist even when the transfer failed or returned an error page.
  • Use retries only for transient failures. Retrying authentication errors or a 404 wastes time and can trigger rate limits.
  • Set connect and total timeouts so a stuck TCP connection cannot hold a worker forever.
  • For resumable downloads, verify that the server supports byte ranges and validate a SHA-256 checksum after completion.
  • Write to a temporary filename, then rename after validation so consumers never read a partial file.

Performance

  • Parallel segments can improve throughput on high-latency links, but server limits, disk I/O and CPU can dominate.
  • One persistent connection may beat many short connections for small API calls. Reuse sessions in Python or a persistent HTTP client in Node.js.
  • Compression reduces transfer size but consumes CPU. Measure for your payload and network.
  • Recursive crawls are usually bounded by request count and server politeness, not raw bandwidth.

Cost

cURL, Wget, Wget2, HTTPie CLI, aria2 and PowerShell are command-line software choices; your direct costs usually come from bandwidth, API quotas, compute time and storage. Multi-source downloads can increase the number of requests. Recursive retrieval can multiply bandwidth quickly. Check provider terms before automating at scale.

Or skip the browser setup

If the job is producing website screenshots rather than downloading an HTTP response, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first. It accepts one GET request and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Troubleshooting

“Command not found”

Install the package for your operating system, then open a new shell so its PATH is refreshed. In containers, confirm the binary exists in the image rather than assuming the host installation is available.

Windows runs the wrong curl

PowerShell 5.1 maps curl and wget to Invoke-WebRequest. Run Get-Alias curl, use curl.exe for cURL, or use the native PowerShell cmdlet deliberately.

HTTP 401 or 403

Check the token, header spelling, clock skew for signed requests, required User-Agent and redirect behavior. Do not paste secrets into shared logs or shell history.

HTTP 404

Verify the URL, path, API version and trailing slash. Disable automatic retries for a permanent 404.

TLS or certificate errors

Update the client and CA bundle, verify the hostname and system clock, and inspect a corporate proxy. Avoid disabling certificate verification except for a controlled local test.

The downloaded file is HTML

The server may have returned a login page, error document or redirect target. Save headers, inspect the status and content type, and use authentication or -L only when redirects are expected.

aria2 is slower with more connections

The origin may throttle parallel requests, range requests may be unsupported, or your disk may be saturated. Reduce -x/-s, test a single connection and compare checksums.

Wget recursive download is too large

Constrain domains and path scope, add --no-parent, set a delay and exclude unnecessary file types. Stop the job and review the URL rules before restarting.

PowerShell parsing behaves differently

Check whether the script runs on Windows PowerShell 5.1 or PowerShell 7+. Apply -UseBasicParsing where required by the documented compatibility behavior and prefer Invoke-RestMethod for JSON APIs.

FAQ

What is the best cURL alternative?

HTTPie is the best first choice for readable API requests; aria2 is better for advanced downloads; PowerShell is better for Windows-native automation.

What can I use instead of Wget?

Use aria2 for segmented or multi-protocol downloads, HTTPie for API calls, or Wget2 when you want the Wget workflow with a newer implementation.

Which tool downloads fastest?

No tool is universally fastest. Throughput depends on server limits, latency, connection count, disk speed and payload size. Benchmark your exact URL and options.

Is HTTPie a replacement for aria2?

No. HTTPie focuses on human-friendly HTTP and API interaction; aria2 focuses on high-throughput, multi-source and protocol-diverse transfers.

Should I use PowerShell curl or curl.exe?

Use curl.exe when you need actual cURL flags and behavior. Use Invoke-WebRequest or Invoke-RestMethod when PowerShell objects and pipelines are the goal.

Are the survey percentages market share?

No. The 2025 curl user survey figures (Wget roughly 73%, aria2c 12.8%, HTTPie 8.1%) and the 2024 analysis are survey responses about favorite download utilities, not market share.
