Can Microsoft Teams Detect Screenshots?

Teams does not generally notify participants about screenshots. Learn what Prevent screen captures does, which platforms it supports, and what admins should know.

Usually, no. Microsoft Teams does not generally notify the organizer or other participants when someone takes a screenshot during a meeting or call. A Microsoft External Staff answer on Microsoft Q&A, dated June 13, 2025, says Teams does not currently include a feature that alerts users when a screenshot is captured.

Teams has a separate Teams Premium meeting control called Prevent screen captures. It attempts to block or obscure screenshots and recordings on supported platforms. That setting prevents capture; it is not a general screenshot-detection or notification system.

What Teams does and does not detect

Question Answer
Does Teams normally alert the organizer when I take a screenshot? No general alert is documented.
Does Teams have a control that can stop screenshots? Yes. Teams Premium organizers can enable Prevent screen captures for eligible meetings.
Does that control report who tried to capture? It is described as a blocking or obscuring control, not an audit notification feature.
Does sensitive-content detection detect screenshots? No. It examines shared screen content for configured sensitive data.
Do watermarks prove that Teams detected a screenshot? No. Watermarks deter unauthorized sharing but do not report that a screenshot was taken.

What “Prevent screen captures” does

Prevent screen captures is a Teams Premium meeting option. When enabled, Microsoft says it blocks screenshots and screen recordings made with built-in device tools and most third-party capture applications, while restricting unsupported clients to audio-only participation.

  • Windows desktop: A screenshot shows a black rectangle over the meeting window, including popout windows.
  • iOS and Android: Screenshots and recordings are blocked and the attendee sees a restriction message. Microsoft lists the stage, chat, participant list, notes, banners, and Copilot panels among the protected views.
  • Teams Rooms on Windows: Listed as supported.
  • macOS desktop, Teams on the web, virtual desktop, Cloud Video Interop, and Teams Rooms on Android: Listed as unsupported for this control; attendees join audio-only.

The feature is off by default. A meeting organizer or co-organizer with Teams Premium enables it in the meeting’s Options under Advanced protection. Attendees do not need Teams Premium. Microsoft says to turn it on before the meeting; if it is enabled after the meeting starts, it takes effect after everyone leaves and rejoins. Support can differ for webinars and town halls, so check Microsoft’s current meeting-options documentation before relying on it for an event.

What it cannot guarantee

Protection depends on the client and capture method. Microsoft describes blocking built-in tools and most third-party capture apps, not every possible way to copy what a participant can see. A second camera, another device, or an unsupported client can still defeat the practical goal of preventing redistribution. Treat the setting as a technical restriction and deterrent, not proof that a meeting is impossible to record.

Do not confuse screenshot detection with these features

Sensitive-content detection

Teams can inspect shared-screen content for configured categories of sensitive information. Microsoft lists examples such as credit card numbers, U.S. bank and routing numbers, U.S. Social Security numbers, passport numbers, and several EU identity-number categories. When a match is detected, the presenter and organizer can receive notifications and the presenter can stop sharing. Microsoft says visual data from detected shared content is not stored.

This feature watches the content being presented. It does not tell Teams that a participant pressed a screenshot shortcut.

Watermarks

Teams can overlay a participant’s email address on meeting video or shared content. Microsoft describes this as a deterrent to unauthorized sharing. A watermark does not create a screenshot alert and does not make capture impossible.

How to check the setting before a meeting

  1. Confirm that the organizer or co-organizer has Teams Premium.
  2. Open the scheduled meeting’s Meeting options.
  3. Open Advanced protection.
  4. Turn on Prevent screen captures.
  5. Tell attendees which clients are supported. People joining from an unsupported platform may be limited to audio-only.
  6. If you change the setting after the meeting begins, have everyone leave and rejoin so the change can take effect.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to do
No screenshot alert appears Normal Teams behavior; the product does not generally notify participants. Use organizational policy, access controls, or the Premium prevention setting if you need restrictions.
The option is missing The organizer lacks Teams Premium, the meeting type is not eligible, or tenant policy has changed. Verify the license, meeting type, and current Microsoft documentation with your administrator.
A Windows screenshot is black Prevent screen captures is active. Use a supported Teams client and ask the organizer to change the meeting policy if legitimate capture is required.
Mobile capture shows a restriction message iOS or Android enforcement is active. Do not assume this is a detection alert; it is the prevention control blocking capture.
A participant can only join audio The client is listed as unsupported for screen-capture prevention. Join from a supported client or ask the organizer whether the restriction should be disabled.
Sensitive-data warnings appear while presenting Sensitive-content detection found a configured pattern in shared content. Review the shared material and stop sharing or remove the sensitive data. This is separate from screenshot activity.

Privacy and policy guidance for organizers

  • Tell participants when capture restrictions and watermarks are enabled.
  • Classify the meeting content before choosing a control; prevention, watermarks, and sensitive-content detection solve different problems.
  • Use the supported-client list when inviting external attendees.
  • Do not promise that screenshots are fully impossible or that Teams will produce an audit record of every attempt.
  • For highly confidential material, limit distribution, share only the necessary window, and follow your organization’s retention and data-loss-prevention policies.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to capture a public Teams-related webpage, documentation page, or other URL rather than monitor a private meeting, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. It is not a Teams screenshot detector and cannot bypass meeting permissions; it captures a URL you are authorized to access.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options. A basic request is:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.microsoft.com/microsoft-teams -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://www.microsoft.com/microsoft-teams"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://www.microsoft.com/microsoft-teams' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and whether the shot was billed. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

FAQ

Can a Teams administrator see that I used Snipping Tool?

The documented Teams behavior does not provide a general screenshot notification. Separate endpoint-management or data-loss-prevention software may have its own policies, so Teams behavior alone does not answer what your organization’s devices log.

Does Teams Premium have to be installed by every attendee?

No. The organizer or co-organizer needs Teams Premium to enable the meeting control; attendees do not need the license.

Does a black screenshot mean Teams detected me?

It means the Prevent screen captures control is active on a supported Windows client. It does not establish that Teams sent an alert or recorded your identity.

Can I rely on this behavior forever?

No software behavior or platform list is permanent. Microsoft’s current support and meeting-options pages should be the source of truth for your tenant and client versions.
