How to capture screenshots of competitor pages from Bing rankings

Capture Bing results and competitor pages as dated evidence. Record the query, locale, and destination URL so each screenshot has useful context.

To capture competitor pages from Bing rankings, save two kinds of evidence: the Bing results page showing the query and observed result, and the destination competitor page. Record the exact query, capture date and time, locale, device/browser context, observed result position, destination URL, and page title alongside the images. A screenshot records one search session; it does not prove that every Bing user sees the same ranking or that the position will persist.

1. Define what you are comparing

Before opening Bing, write down the question the screenshots should help answer. Choose one exact search phrase and use that same phrase for each comparison run. Decide which competing pages and visible details matter, such as the result title and snippet, or a specific section of the destination page.

Keep observations separate from interpretation. A result shown at a particular position is an observation from that session; a claim about traffic, conversions, or enduring ranking would require other evidence.

2. Record the search context

Make a note before capturing. At minimum, record:

  • Exact query, including spelling and punctuation.
  • Date and time of capture.
  • Locale or market and language.
  • Device and browser context.
  • Any account or personalization state that could matter.
  • Observed result position and the competitor destination URL.

These details make a later comparison interpretable. Do not assume a result order is universal: Bing says it may remove results or adjust its algorithms to prioritize pages it considers more useful and relevant.

3. Capture the Bing results page

  1. Run the exact query you recorded.
  2. Keep the query and enough surrounding page context visible to identify the search and result layout.
  3. Capture the result page or the relevant visible area. Save a separate image for each query and capture session.
  4. Note the competitor’s observed position and visible result details, including title and snippet, in your evidence log.

The image is useful evidence of what appeared in that session. It is not a ranking report across locations or users. The cited Microsoft material does not define a browser-specific screenshot shortcut or an official screenshot archive format, so use the capture method available in your browser or operating system and retain the original image.

4. Capture the competitor page

  1. Open the relevant Bing result.
  2. Record the destination URL and page title separately from the image.
  3. Capture the page area that supports the comparison. Use a viewport capture when the visible first screen is what matters, or a full-page capture when relevant content continues below the fold.
  4. Keep the Bing results capture and destination-page capture as distinct files. They answer different questions.

For a fair comparison, use the same capture scope for each destination page. If you compare a page section, identify the section in your notes; if you capture full pages, note that layout and page length can make visual comparisons harder.

5. Keep an evidence log

Use filenames or a small table that connects every image to its source and context. For example:

query,date-time,locale,device,result-position,destination-url,page-title,filename,notes
"project management software",2026-10-04 14:20 UTC,en-US,desktop browser,3,https://example.com/page,Example page,2026-10-04_project-management_en-US_serp.png,Results page
"project management software",2026-10-04 14:20 UTC,en-US,desktop browser,3,https://example.com/page,Example page,2026-10-04_project-management_en-US_page.png,Destination page

The example uses a fictional destination and illustrates a record format, not a real search result. If results change in a later session, save a new dated capture rather than overwriting the earlier one. That preserves the distinction between separate observations.

6. Compare pages consistently

When reviewing several competitors, use the same axes for each:

  • Observed Bing result position for the same query.
  • Visible result title and snippet.
  • Destination URL and page title.
  • Page content relevant to the question being investigated.
  • Capture date, locale, and device/browser context.

Describe what the screenshots show, then label any interpretation as interpretation. Screenshots alone do not establish competitor traffic, conversion performance, or an invariant ranking.

What Bing Webmaster Tools can and cannot tell you

Bing Webmaster Tools Search Performance reports on pages for the site represented in the account, along with associated queries and metrics such as impressions, clicks, average CTR, and average position. Average position summarizes positions at which that site’s page appeared. It is not a service for archiving competitor screenshots or viewing competitors’ private traffic. The Bing Webmaster API documentation likewise describes information for a user’s registered sites, including rank and traffic statistics, keyword details, and crawl statistics. See Bing Search Performance and the Bing Webmaster API documentation.

Responsible interpretation and collection

Treat each capture as a dated observation. Microsoft says Bing may remove certain results or adjust algorithms to prioritize results it considers more useful and relevant; it also describes warning notices for some potentially harmful URLs. Bing Webmaster Guidelines say deceptive or abusive practices may reduce visibility or result in delisting. See How Bing delivers search results and the Bing Webmaster Guidelines.

This workflow is for ordinary research and recordkeeping. The cited sources do not establish permission for automated collection, circumvention, or any particular volume of repeated queries. If you plan to automate search-result collection, check the current applicable terms and technical guidance separately before doing so.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a screenshot or PDF. Its capture flow accepts cookie/consent banners and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.

For an individual competitor destination page, make a request like this. Replace the target URL with the page you are authorized to capture, and keep the query/session details in your evidence log:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Python equivalent:

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js equivalent:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer())));

ScreenshotNeo also has an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. All features are on every plan. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card.

Common problems and fixes

Problem Likely cause What to do
The screenshot does not show the query or which result was relevant. The capture is too tightly cropped or the context was not logged. Capture enough of the results page to identify the query and result layout; add query, observed position, date, and locale to the log.
A screenshot is being treated as proof of a permanent rank. A single session is being generalized to other users or dates. Describe the image as one observation. Save a new dated capture for each later comparison.
The competitor destination cannot be identified from the saved image. The URL and page title were not preserved alongside the screenshot. Record both in the evidence log when opening the result.
Two competitor pages are hard to compare. Different page regions or capture contexts were used. Repeat with the same query, locale, device/browser context, and capture scope; note any remaining differences.
A Bing Webmaster report is expected to show competitors’ private metrics. Search Performance is being mistaken for competitor analytics. Use it for the site represented in the account. It does not provide competitor screenshot archives or private traffic.
An automated collection plan assumes this workflow approves scraping. Practical screenshot guidance is being confused with terms or technical authorization. Review current applicable terms and technical guidance separately; the sources cited here do not settle automation permission or query volume.

Performance, reliability, and cost

For manual research, the main reliability practice is preserving context and keeping separate dated files; no screenshot method can make one search session representative of all users. Capture only the page area needed for the comparison when a full-page image would add no useful evidence, and use full-page capture when below-the-fold content is part of the question.

ScreenshotNeo offers caching with a TTL you choose, async jobs with signed webhooks, and bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call. These can help organize repeated page captures, but they do not establish Bing ranking representativeness or authorize automated Bing result collection. Its listed plans are Free: 1,000 shots/month; Starter: $5 for 3,000; Growth: $15 for 15,000; Pro: $39 for 60,000; Scale: $99 for 250,000; and Business: $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free. Every feature is available on every plan; see ScreenshotNeo for product details.

FAQ

Should I save the Bing results and competitor page in one image?

Usually save them separately. The results image documents the observed search context; the destination image documents the page content. Link them with the same query and session details in your log.

Can I use Bing Webmaster Tools to monitor a competitor’s rank?

The cited Search Performance report is for the site represented in the account. It is not a competitor screenshot or private traffic tool.

Does a screenshot prove that a competitor ranks first for everyone?

No. It records what appeared in one search session under the conditions you documented.

Can I automate repeated Bing searches based on this guide?

This guide does not establish that. Check current applicable terms and technical guidance before automating collection.
