How to capture an entire website page in Firefox for a research report
Save a full-page Firefox screenshot as PNG, create a report-ready PDF, or keep an offline copy. Includes desktop, iOS, and troubleshooting steps.
For a single image of the whole page, open Firefox’s screenshot controls, choose Save full page, then choose Download. On Windows or Linux, press Ctrl+Shift+S; on macOS, press Command+Shift+S. You can also right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot. Firefox saves the capture as a PNG in its default download folder. Mozilla’s screenshot instructions
If your report needs a multipage document or selectable text, use Firefox’s print preview and save as PDF instead. Check the preview: print layout can differ from the page as it appears on screen.
1. Save the entire page as a PNG on desktop
- Open the page in Firefox and wait for the content you need to appear.
- Open screenshot controls with Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS. Alternatively, right-click an empty part of the page and select Take Screenshot.
- Select Save full page. This captures beyond the visible viewport. Save visible captures only what is currently on screen. Firefox also offers a selected-region capture and can highlight a page element for capture.
- Select Download to save a PNG, or Copy to put the image on the clipboard and paste it into another application.
- Open the saved file and check that the parts needed for your report are present and legible: the page heading, relevant content, images, and bottom of the page.
Firefox’s downloaded screenshot filename includes the capture date and time and the page title, according to Mozilla Support. If the screenshot button is more convenient for your workflow, Firefox lets you add it from Menu > More Tools > Customize Toolbar. Mozilla Support: Take screenshots in Firefox
2. Choose the right format for your report
| Method | What you get | Good fit | Check before using it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Firefox screenshot: Save full page | One tall PNG image; you can also copy it to the clipboard. | Visual evidence, a single image in a report, or preserving the page’s on-screen appearance. | Inspect the full image for missing content, awkward scaling, or text too small to read at report size. |
| Print preview: Save to PDF | A document laid out across pages, with print settings. | A reading copy or report attachment where pages and selectable text are useful. | Review the preview: the page may be formatted differently for printing than it is on screen. |
| Save Page As | A local page file, or a page plus supporting files, depending on the selected format. | An offline reference copy when you need the page files rather than a screenshot. | A complete page copy is not one screenshot and may not retain the original HTML link structure. |
This is a format choice based on the output each method creates. Firefox documents the available screenshot, print, and page-saving controls; it does not prescribe a particular research-report format.
3. Save a report-friendly PDF
- Open Firefox’s Print… command to show print preview.
- Set the destination to Save to PDF.
- Adjust the page range, orientation, color mode, paper size, scale, pages per sheet, margins, and headers or footers as needed. You may also see a format choice such as Original or Simplified, depending on the page and Firefox version. Simplified format disables printed backgrounds.
- Review the preview for missing sections, broken page breaks, clipped content, and legibility.
- Save the PDF and open it once to check the result before adding it to your report.
Use the PDF when readers need to move through the page as a document or select text. Use the PNG when the visual layout itself matters. These are practical recommendations, not a guarantee that either output preserves every site exactly as displayed. Mozilla Support: How to print web pages in Firefox
4. Save a copy for offline reference
If you need page files rather than an image or print-layout document, choose Firefox’s Save Page As command. The available formats include:
- Web page, complete: saves the page with pictures and creates a directory for supporting files. It may not preserve the original HTML link structure.
- Web page, HTML only: keeps the original HTML link structure but omits pictures.
- Text files: saves a text version without the original HTML link structure.
- All files: saves the page as all files.
A saved web page is an offline copy in files, not a single full-page screenshot. Choose it when you need the page files for reference; choose a PNG or PDF when you need an artifact ready to insert into a report. Mozilla Support: How to save a web page
5. Capture a full page on Firefox for iOS
The iOS workflow uses the device’s screenshot interface, rather than the desktop Firefox screenshot menu:
- Take a screenshot using the device’s screenshot buttons.
- Open the screenshot preview and choose Full Page.
- Tap Done, then choose Save as PDF.
This documented route produces a PDF. Keep it separate from the desktop instructions, which save a full-page screenshot as a PNG. Mozilla Support: Save web pages as PDFs in Firefox for iOS
6. Make the capture useful as research evidence
- Keep the source page URL with the saved artifact in your report notes, so readers can identify what the capture represents.
- Check that the parts you intend to cite are readable at the size they will appear in the report.
- For a long PNG, consider whether a reader can inspect it comfortably. If the image is too tall or small to read, save a PDF as well.
- Review the saved output rather than assuming that everything loaded on the site will appear in the capture. The screenshot and print controls provide output choices; they do not guarantee every page element will render correctly.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The screenshot contains only the visible viewport. | Save visible was chosen instead of Save full page. | Open the screenshot controls again and choose Save full page. |
| The screenshot shortcut does not open the controls. | The shortcut may have been entered for the wrong operating system, or the controls may be easier to access from the page menu. | Use Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, and Command+Shift+S on macOS. You can also right-click an empty page area and choose Take Screenshot. |
| A part of the page or an image is missing. | The page content may not have appeared before capture, or the capture may not have rendered a site element as expected. | Wait until the content you need is visible, capture again, and inspect the resulting file. If the issue is limited to print output, compare against the screenshot because the print layout can differ. |
| The PDF looks different from the website. | Webpages can be laid out differently for printing. | Review print preview, adjust scale, margins, orientation, and format, then save again. Mozilla specifically advises checking the preview because a page may appear differently on paper. |
| The image is hard to read in the report. | A whole-page capture can be very tall, so it may shrink substantially when placed on a report page. | Use a PDF for multipage reading, or include a focused screenshot of the relevant part alongside the full-page record. |
| The saved offline copy has missing images or links. | The selected Save Page As format controls which assets and link structure are retained. | Choose Web page, complete when you need pictures and supporting files, or HTML only when retaining the HTML link structure matters more than images. Neither option is the same as a screenshot. |
8. Performance, reliability, and file handling
For a one-off report capture, Firefox’s built-in controls avoid setting up a separate capture service. The capture still depends on the page being available and its needed content appearing in the browser. Check the output, especially on long pages or pages with content that appears after the initial view.
Choose output based on how readers will use it: PNG for a single visual record, PDF for a paginated document, or Save Page As for an offline file copy. A full-page PNG can be cumbersome to inspect in a report if it must be scaled down; a PDF can break content across pages or differ from the screen layout. Review either output before relying on it. The Mozilla support instructions describe controls and format options, but do not provide capture-time benchmarks or guarantees for every website.

For repeatable captures in a script or workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com"},
timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response says the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Frequently asked questions
Does Firefox save a full-page screenshot as a PDF?
On desktop, Firefox’s full-page screenshot download is a PNG. Use print preview and choose Save to PDF for a desktop PDF. Firefox for iOS documents a separate full-page screenshot route that saves as PDF.
Can I capture only part of the page?
Yes. Firefox’s screenshot controls include a visible-area capture, a selected region, and a highlighted page element, in addition to the full-page option.
Is Save Page As the same as taking a screenshot?
No. Save Page As creates an offline page copy in one of several file formats. A screenshot is an image of the page, and print preview creates a PDF document.
Where does Firefox put a downloaded screenshot?
Firefox downloads the PNG to its default download folder. The downloaded filename includes the capture date and time and the page title.
