How to Capture Google SERP Screenshots with Dark Mode Enabled
Enable Google Search’s Dark theme, then capture the visible results or a full page with your browser. Here’s how to save the screenshot and troubleshoot theme issues.
To capture a Google search results page (SERP) in dark mode, set Google Search’s own appearance to Dark theme, save the setting, confirm the results page is dark, and then take a visible-area or full-page screenshot with your browser. Chrome’s dark theme changes parts of Chrome’s interface; it does not replace Google Search’s separate appearance setting.
1. Turn on Dark theme for Google Search
- Open Google Search and run the query you want to document.
- Open Settings. Depending on the page layout, the control may be at the top left of the results page.
- Select See all settings, then open Appearance.
- Choose Dark theme and click Save.
- Return to the results and check that the page itself has a dark background before capturing it.
Google Search’s Appearance setting applies to the Search homepage, results page, and Search settings. The other choices include Device default, which follows the device’s color scheme, and Light theme. For Google’s instructions, see Change your Search browser settings.
2. Capture the visible results or the full page
Choose the capture area based on what you need to show. A visible-area screenshot records what is on screen. A full-page capture can include results below the fold, where the browser’s screenshot feature supports it.
Firefox built-in screenshot
- Open the dark Google results page.
- Right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot. You can also use Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Choose a region, Save full page, or Save visible.
- Download the image or copy it to the clipboard.
Firefox documents these capture modes and save options in Take screenshots in Firefox. On Wayland, Mozilla notes a limitation that can affect moving the crosshair in the selection interface.
Chrome and other browsers
Use the browser’s built-in screenshot option if it offers the area and page length you need. An optional Chrome extension such as GoFullPage describes full-page image and PDF capture in its Chrome Web Store listing. An extension is not required for the Google Search theme setting, and its listing should not be treated as a guarantee of behavior on every current results page.
3. Keep enough context to interpret the screenshot
If the image will serve as evidence or be shared with a team, record the search query, capture date, locale, and browser context alongside the file. Search results may vary with query and context; a screenshot records the page shown in that capture, not a universal or permanently fixed results page.
4. Troubleshoot dark theme and capture issues
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The results page is still light | Google Search’s Dark theme was not saved, or the page has not reflected the preference yet. | Open Search settings from the results page, go to Appearance, select Dark theme, save, and confirm the page appearance before capturing. |
| Chrome is dark but Google results are light | Chrome’s interface theme and Google Search’s appearance are separate settings. | Set Dark theme in Google Search Appearance. Chrome’s browser theme is managed separately under Customize Chrome; see Browse in Dark mode or Dark theme. |
| You cannot find Appearance | The settings control may be placed differently in the current page layout. | Open Settings from a Google results page and look for See all settings, then Appearance. |
| The preference does not carry to another browser | The Search preference may not be saved to the signed-in account, or the other browser may use a different account or profile. | Sign in while saving the Search setting if you want it available in browsers where you sign in. Check the account and profile in the other browser too. |
| The screenshot omits lower results | The capture saved only the visible viewport. | Choose a full-page option if available, or capture the page in sections if you only have a visible-area control. |
| Firefox’s selection crosshair is difficult to move | Mozilla documents a Wayland limitation for the selection UI. | Use Firefox’s full-page or visible capture option, or another browser capture method available in your environment. |
5. Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A browser screenshot captures the page as displayed in that browser; for an automated capture request, use the API below. This one-call example captures the Google results URL you provide, but it does not set Google Search’s Dark theme for you. To capture a dark SERP, first make sure the URL and Search preference produce the dark page you want.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.google.com/search?q=example -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://www.google.com/search?q=example"},
timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({
access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY',
url: 'https://www.google.com/search?q=example'
});
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
await Bun.write('shot.webp', new Uint8Array(await res.arrayBuffer()));
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and setup. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

6. Performance, reliability, and cost
- Capture only what you need. A visible-area screenshot is enough when the evidence is limited to the first screen. Full-page capture is useful when lower results matter, but creates a taller image to store and review.
- Confirm the theme before capture. This avoids saving a screenshot that needs to be repeated because the page remained light.
- Preserve context. Keep the query and capture date with the image so another person can understand what it documents.
- Browser capture cost. The browser methods described here use built-in capture controls; an optional extension may have its own terms, which should be checked in its listing.
- API cost. ScreenshotNeo’s Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card. Paid options are Starter ($5 for 3,000), Growth ($15 for 15,000), Pro ($39 for 60,000), Scale ($99 for 250,000), and Business ($249 for 1,000,000). Yearly billing gives two months free; all listed features are available on every plan.
FAQ
Does changing Chrome to dark mode make Google Search dark?
No. Set Google Search’s own Appearance preference to Dark theme. Chrome’s theme controls Chrome’s interface separately.
Can I save a full-page Google results screenshot in Firefox?
Firefox’s screenshot tool offers Save full page as well as Save visible. Use the full-page option when you need results below the current viewport.
Will my Search theme preference follow me to every browser?
Google says signed-in Search settings stay the same in browsers where you sign in. This depends on using the relevant signed-in account and does not guarantee the preference in every unsigned session or browser profile.
Do I need an extension to capture a SERP?
No. Firefox includes a screenshot tool, and browsers may provide their own capture controls. An extension is an optional method when its features suit your needs.
