How to capture SERP screenshots for regional searches in Tamil Nadu

Set a Google Search region, emulate browser geolocation when needed, and capture a documented SERP snapshot in Chrome. Learn what the result can—and cannot—prove.

To capture a regional Google Search results page (SERP) for Tamil Nadu, set the Search region in Google Search settings, optionally emulate a target location in Chrome DevTools, run the same query under recorded conditions, and capture the viewport or full page in Chrome Device Mode. Save the screenshot with the query, time, language, region, viewport, location permission, and the location attribution shown on the results page.

This creates a repeatable, documented snapshot. It does not prove that every person in Tamil Nadu—or even every person in the chosen city—would see the same results. Google estimates search location from multiple signals, including device location, account places, past activity, and internet address. [Google’s location guidance]

1. Define what your Tamil Nadu test is measuring

Before changing settings, decide whether you want to test a country or region preference, browser geolocation, or an approximation of a local user’s view. These are related but different setups. A region preference is not a city-level GPS selector, and a browser geolocation override does not control every signal Google may use.

  • Query: Keep the exact query identical across captures, including spelling and punctuation.
  • Target: Choose Tamil Nadu as the region, or name the target city or locality, such as Chennai, if your test also uses location emulation.
  • Language: Record the language setting and keep it consistent across comparisons.
  • Comparison: Decide which one location variable you will change between runs.

Google says Search results are customized to the current region and provides a setting to see results for a different country or region. [See results for a different country]

2. Set the Google Search region

  1. Open Google Search settings on your desktop browser.
  2. Find Region Settings.
  3. Select the intended region and save the setting.
  4. Return to Search and run the query you chose for the test.

This sets a Search region preference. Do not describe it as selecting a specific Tamil Nadu city or as reproducing every location signal that affects a live result page. Typing a country-code top-level domain into the address bar is not a substitute for changing the region setting: Google’s 2017 guidance says country service preferences should be managed in settings. [Google: Making search results more local and relevant]

3. Optionally emulate browser geolocation in Chrome

Use this step when your test needs a page to receive a simulated browser location. Chrome DevTools can emulate a preset location or custom coordinates for testing browser behavior. This is a browser input; Chrome’s documentation does not promise that it overrides Google’s IP, account, activity, or other Search context. [Chrome DevTools Device Mode]

  1. Open the Google Search page in Chrome and open DevTools.
  2. Open the Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows, Linux, or ChromeOS, or Command+Shift+P on macOS.
  3. Type Sensors and select Show Sensors.
  4. In the Sensors panel, select a location preset or enter custom coordinates for your chosen test location.
  5. Check the browser’s location permission state for google.com. Reload if the page needs to read geolocation on load, then run the query again.
  6. Read and record the location attribution displayed on the results page.

Google says a browser can allow or block sending device location to google.com. The results page can identify whether location was estimated from the device, internet address, or other sources. Record that attribution instead of assuming the simulated coordinates controlled the result. [Understand and manage your location when you search]

4. Capture the SERP in Chrome

  1. With the results page open, enable Chrome Device Mode if you need to specify or reproduce a viewport or device preset.
  2. Open the Device Mode More options menu.
  3. Choose Capture screenshot for the visible viewport, or Capture a full size screenshot for the full page, including content beyond the viewport.
  4. Check that the saved image includes enough context to identify the query and interpret the results. If the full-page image is too tall for convenient review, save a viewport capture as well.

Chrome documents both viewport and full-size screenshot capture in Device Mode. [Chrome DevTools Device Mode]

5. Keep a capture record

A screenshot without its conditions can be hard to interpret later. Save a small record beside each image. This checklist is a practical recommendation based on the location inputs Google documents; it is not a Google-mandated reporting format.

  • Capture date and time in UTC
  • Exact query
  • Selected Search region
  • Target city or locality and coordinates, if geolocation emulation was used
  • Search language
  • Browser and version, if known
  • Device Mode preset and viewport dimensions
  • Account and personalization state, where known
  • Whether browser location permission was allowed or blocked
  • The location attribution shown on the SERP
  • Whether the run was a region-preference test, a browser-geolocation test, or an attempt to approximate a local-user view

For a comparison across Tamil Nadu locations, keep the query, language, viewport, and account state consistent. Change one location variable at a time and record the capture time. Treat any differences as snapshots: result composition can change with time and context.

6. Interpret the result carefully

Google Search Help says, “When you search on Google, Google will always estimate the general area that you’re searching from.” It describes location signals such as device location, home or work locations associated with an account, past activity, and the internet address. [Google Search location guidance]

Accordingly, setting a Search region and emulating browser geolocation can make a test more controlled, but neither alone establishes that the screenshot is exactly what a particular Tamil Nadu resident sees. This limitation follows from Google’s description of multiple location inputs and Chrome’s description of browser geolocation emulation; the docs do not say that one simulated input overrides all the others.

Google’s guidance for site owners also says most, but not all, Google crawls originate from the US and that Google does not vary crawl location to detect site variations. That is about Google crawling websites; it does not certify that an emulated SERP screenshot equals a local searcher’s view. [Google Search Central: Managing multi-regional and multilingual sites]

7. Troubleshooting regional SERP captures

Symptom Likely cause What to do
Results do not appear local to the target city Search region is a regional preference, not a city GPS control; other location inputs may also apply. Confirm the saved Search region, use Sensors if the test needs browser geolocation, and record the SERP’s location attribution. Treat the capture as a controlled snapshot.
The page reports a different or approximate location Google may estimate location using signals beyond the browser’s simulated coordinates. Record the displayed attribution and permission state. Do not claim the coordinates fully localized Google Search.
The browser does not prompt for location Permission may already be granted or blocked, or the page may not request device location in that flow. Check Chrome’s site permission state and note it in the capture record. A missing prompt does not prove the override was used by Search.
The location change seems to have no effect The page may need to read location after the override is applied, or another signal may dominate. Apply the Sensors override, reload, rerun the same query, then inspect the result-page attribution.
Only part of the page is in the image A viewport screenshot captures only the visible area. Use Device Mode’s Capture a full size screenshot option for the whole page.
Two captures cannot be compared fairly Query, language, account state, viewport, permission, or capture time changed along with location. Repeat with all other conditions held steady and change one location variable at a time.
A country domain did not switch the Search region Google says the country service preference should be managed in settings. Set and save the intended region through Search settings.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation. For a SERP research workflow, it can capture a URL, but it does not establish that Google served the same localized results a person in Tamil Nadu would see. Keep recording the location attribution and test conditions.

Performance, reliability, and cost notes

  • Capture speed: For manual research, viewport capture is the shorter path when only visible results matter. Full-size capture includes below-the-fold content and may create a much taller image.
  • Repeatability: Keep the query, language, viewport, account state, and permission state steady. Save the capture time because the SERP can change over time.
  • Interpretation: A screenshot documents what the browser displayed under recorded conditions; it is not proof of a universal regional result.
  • Costs: The Chrome workflow uses the documented browser tools and Search settings. If using ScreenshotNeo, its stated free and paid plan limits are listed above; only clean shots are billed, while failed or non-content outcomes and cache hits are not billed.

FAQ

How do I see Google results for a different region?

Change and save the region in Google Search settings, then run the same query. This changes the Search region preference, not every location signal.

How can I check Google search results for Chennai?

Set the intended Search region, then optionally emulate browser geolocation in Chrome DevTools Sensors. Record the results page’s location attribution because the geolocation override does not prove that Google used Chennai as its only location signal.

How do I take a full-page screenshot of Google search results?

In Chrome Device Mode, choose More options and then Capture a full size screenshot.

Does changing Google’s country domain localize the results?

Google’s guidance says to manage the country or region preference in Search settings rather than relying on a country-code domain.

Can this method prove what every Tamil Nadu user sees?

No. It produces a documented snapshot under specific conditions. Google describes several inputs for estimating location, so a controlled browser capture cannot establish one universal SERP for the state.
