How to Capture Only a Selected Area of a Web Page in Nimbus Screenshot
Use Nimbus Screenshot’s Selected Area mode to capture a hand-drawn region of a web page, and learn when to use its other capture modes.
To capture just part of a web page in Nimbus Screenshot, choose Selected Area, hold the left mouse button, drag a rectangle around the visible region you want, and press the checkmark to confirm. The capture opens in the editor; finish with Done if you do not need to make edits. This mode is for a region you draw yourself on screen.
Capture a selected area in Nimbus Screenshot
- Open the web page and scroll until the part you want is visible.
- Open Nimbus Screenshot and choose Selected Area.
- Hold the left mouse button and drag around the region to capture.
- Check the selection. Adjust it if needed, then press the checkmark.
- In the editor, make any edits you need. If no edits are needed, choose Done to finish.
The exact wording and placement of controls can vary across extension versions. Nimbus’s help guide describes this workflow as selecting “Selected Area,” dragging with the left mouse button, and pressing the checkmark. See the Nimbus Screenshot help guide.
Choose the right capture mode
| Mode | What it captures | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Selected Area | A rectangle you draw over the visible screen region. | You need a particular visible portion and want to choose its boundaries yourself. |
| Capture Fragment | A page fragment, such as an article. | You want Nimbus to capture a page element or content fragment rather than draw a rectangle. |
| Visible part of page | The content currently visible on screen. | You want the current viewport without drawing a crop. |
| Entire Page | The whole web page. | You need content extending beyond the visible viewport. |
For a manually chosen on-screen crop, use Selected Area. These modes have different scopes; selecting the wrong one can produce a viewport or full-page image instead of the rectangle you intended.
Repeat a crop from the same position
If you often capture the same region, enable Save crop position in Nimbus settings. Nimbus documents this setting for Selected Area and Selected and Scroll; it reuses the previous selection’s size and location. This is useful for recurring captures of a consistent page layout. If the page content or layout shifts, inspect the crop before confirming so the saved rectangle still covers the intended content. Nimbus settings help.
Clipboard and finishing notes
If copying the screenshot directly to the clipboard does not work in Chrome or Firefox, Nimbus’s Edge help page suggests right-clicking the displayed screenshot and choosing Copy image. Clipboard behavior depends on browser version and permissions, so use that context-menu workaround if the direct copy action is unavailable. Nimbus browser help.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The result shows the whole visible page instead of my rectangle. | A different capture mode was selected. | Start again and choose Selected Area, then draw and confirm the region. |
| The captured region is in the wrong place. | The drag began or ended at an unintended point, or a saved crop position reused an old location. | Repeat the selection carefully; review or disable Save crop position if the layout has changed. |
| Content below the screen is missing. | Selected Area captures a region of the visible screen, not the entire page. | Scroll the desired content into view before selecting, or use Entire Page if you need a full-page capture. |
| I cannot copy the displayed image directly. | The browser may restrict copying images directly to the clipboard. | Try right-clicking the screenshot and choosing Copy image; browser behavior and permissions vary. |
| The controls do not match these steps. | The installed extension may use a different or older interface. | Look for the equivalent selected-region mode in your version and consult its help page. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot generated by a script or service instead of manually drawing a crop in a browser, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A standard page capture is one GET request; the API captures a URL, rather than an on-screen rectangle that you draw.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
const image = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', image));
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for output formats and capture options, including capturing an element by CSS selector, full-page capture, and custom viewport sizes. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

FAQ
Can Selected Area capture content that is below the current screen?
It selects a visible screen region. Scroll the content into view first, or choose Entire Page when you need the whole page.
Is Selected Area the same as Capture Fragment?
No. Selected Area is a rectangle you draw manually. Capture Fragment is a separate mode for selecting a page fragment, such as an article.
Can I reuse the same crop?
Yes. Nimbus documents a Save crop position setting for Selected Area and Selected and Scroll, which reuses the prior selection’s dimensions and location.
