How to Capture a Website Screenshot with Print Screen

Capture a website with Print Screen on Windows, save it, snip a region, and grab a full scrolling page when PrtScn is not enough.

Quick answer: On Windows 10 and Windows 11, press PrtScn to capture the entire screen to the clipboard. Open Paint or another image app, press Ctrl+V, then save the image. For a selected area use Windows+Shift+S. A normal Print Screen capture does not include content below the visible browser window; use your browser’s full-page screenshot feature for a scrolling webpage.

What each screenshot shortcut captures

Method Capture extent Where the result goes Best use
PrtScn Whole visible display Clipboard Quick screenshot of everything on screen
Windows+Shift+S Rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen snip Clipboard and Snipping Tool One region or application window
Windows+PrtScn Whole visible display Usually Pictures/Screenshots Save a file immediately when supported by the device
Fn+Windows+Space Whole visible display Clipboard or device-specific destination Keyboards without a dedicated Print Screen key
Edge Screenshot Selected area or entire scrolling webpage Copy or save Content extending below the fold

Microsoft documents these Windows shortcuts and Snipping Tool workflows. The exact key behavior can vary with keyboard firmware, laptop function-key modes, Windows settings, device, market, and browser version.

Capture the visible website with Print Screen

  1. Open the website in your browser.
  2. Resize or arrange the browser so the content you need is visible. Close menus or overlays that should not appear in the image.
  3. Press PrtScn. Windows copies an image of the whole screen to the clipboard.
  4. Open Paint, Word, an image editor, or another application that accepts images.
  5. Press Ctrl+V to paste the screenshot.
  6. Crop or annotate it if needed, then use File → Save as to create a PNG or JPEG file.

PrtScn captures the display, so browser chrome, another window, the taskbar, and notifications can appear. Hide anything sensitive before capturing.

Capture only part of the website

  1. Press Windows+Shift+S.
  2. Choose rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip, or full-screen snip from the Snipping Tool bar.
  3. Select the page area or browser window.
  4. Use the notification to open the snip in Snipping Tool, where you can mark it up, copy it, save it, or share it.

This method is useful for a product panel, error message, chart, or a single section without the rest of the desktop.

Save a screenshot directly to a file

On supported Windows hardware, press Windows+PrtScn. The screen may briefly dim and Windows saves the image under Pictures/Screenshots. If nothing is saved, use PrtScn followed by paste-and-save, or check whether your laptop requires holding Fn.

On a device without a Print Screen key, Microsoft documents Fn+Windows+Space as a possible fallback. Hardware layouts differ, so consult the keyboard or laptop documentation if that combination does not respond.

Capture an entire scrolling webpage

A regular Print Screen press captures only what is visible on the display. It will not automatically stitch content below the fold. In Microsoft Edge, open the browser menu and choose Screenshot, then select the full-page option if it is available in your installed version. Edge can capture the complete webpage or a selected area and lets you copy or save the result. Availability and behavior vary by device, market, and browser version.

  1. Open the page in Edge and wait for images and dynamic content to finish loading.
  2. Open the Edge menu and select Screenshot.
  3. Choose the full-page capture option.
  4. Review the resulting long image, then copy or save it.

For pages with lazy-loaded images, infinite scrolling, consent dialogs, or content that changes while you scroll, a browser capture may still miss or duplicate content. An automated browser or screenshot API gives you explicit wait, cookie, and viewport controls.

PrtScn creates an image of the screen. Ctrl+P in Edge opens the print dialog on Windows (and Command+P on macOS); it produces printed pages or a PDF according to print settings. Printing is not the same as taking a screenshot and may reflow, omit, or restyle the webpage.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Troubleshooting

Nothing happens when I press PrtScn

Your keyboard may require Fn, the key may be configured to open screen snipping, or another utility may own the shortcut. Try Fn+PrtScn, Windows+Shift+S, or the on-screen keyboard.

The screenshot is not in Pictures/Screenshots

PrtScn normally copies to the clipboard; it does not necessarily save a file. Paste it into an image-capable app and save it. The Windows+PrtScn shortcut saves directly only on supported hardware and configurations.

The image contains the wrong monitor

With multiple displays, whole-screen capture can include all visible monitors. Use a window or rectangular snip to select the browser, or temporarily arrange the target window on the desired display.

The webpage is cut off

Print Screen captures the visible viewport. Use Edge’s full-page Screenshot feature or an automated capture tool for a page that scrolls.

Dismiss it before capturing, or use a tool that can accept consent and hide overlays before the shot. Dynamic pages may also require waiting for content to settle.

The screenshot looks blurry

Use the original clipboard or saved PNG instead of a recompressed image. Increase the browser window or display scale when possible. For automated captures, set the viewport and retina scale explicitly.

Performance, reliability, and privacy checklist

  • Wait for the page to finish loading before pressing the shortcut.
  • Check the visible URL and remove passwords, tokens, personal data, and notifications.
  • Use PNG for text and interface screenshots; use JPEG when a smaller photographic file is acceptable.
  • For long pages, confirm that lazy-loaded sections and sticky headers are represented correctly.
  • Keep the original capture before editing so you can recrop it later.
  • When automating many URLs, control waits, retries, caching, viewport size, and output format to manage time and storage.

FAQ

Where do Print Screen screenshots go?

A plain PrtScn capture goes to the clipboard. Windows+PrtScn commonly saves to Pictures/Screenshots on supported devices.

Can Print Screen capture a full webpage?

Not by itself. It captures the visible screen. Use a browser full-page capture feature for a scrolling page.

Is Print Screen the same as Ctrl+P?

No. Print Screen captures an image; Ctrl+P opens the print dialog.

How do I screenshot without a Print Screen key?

Try Windows+Shift+S or the documented Fn+Windows+Space combination on supported hardware.

What is the fastest way to automate website screenshots?

Use a screenshot API such as ScreenshotNeo when you need repeatable URLs, full-page output, cleanup of consent banners, or server-side captures without managing a browser.
