How to capture mobile website screenshots at iPad mini size

Capture a website at current iPad mini dimensions: 744 × 1133 points in portrait. Choose Safari, Chrome, Simulator, a real iPad, or an API based on what you need.

To capture a website at the current iPad mini size, use a portrait viewport of 744 × 1133 points (also the CSS-pixel dimensions to enter in Chrome Device Mode). For landscape, use 1133 × 744. If you need the screenshot at the display’s 2× pixel density, the corresponding image dimensions are 1488 × 2266 pixels in portrait. The right capture method depends on whether you need a quick layout preview, a full-page image, or a check on actual iPadOS.

Apple’s current iPad mini is an 8.3-inch device with a native display resolution of 2266 × 1488 pixels. Those physical pixels are not the CSS viewport size: enter 744 × 1133 for a portrait layout preview, then account for pixel ratio separately if the capture tool exposes it. These dimensions describe the current 8.3-inch model; older iPad mini generations differ. Apple’s layout guidance lists the point and @2x dimensions, and Apple’s iPad mini specifications list the display resolution.

1. Choose the right kind of screenshot

Your goal Capture to use What it shows
Show the screen a reader first sees on an iPad mini Viewport capture at 744 × 1133 One device-sized screen, including its fold.
Document an entire long page Full-page capture Content below the fold as well as the first screen; this is taller than one device screen.
Check responsive layout quickly Safari Responsive Design Mode or Chrome Device Mode A useful desktop preview at the target dimensions.
Confirm iPadOS Safari behavior iPadOS Simulator or physical iPad mini A more faithful check of platform behavior than desktop emulation.
Capture a page already open on iPad iPad screenshot; choose Full Page in Safari when available A screenshot from the device, including a whole-page option for supported Safari captures.

A viewport screenshot and a full-page screenshot answer different questions. Use the viewport version for a first-screen design review. Use full-page capture to share or inspect all page content. A full-page image does not represent one screen as the reader sees it while browsing.

2. Capture with Safari Responsive Design Mode on Mac

Safari lets you enter custom screen-point dimensions and adjust pixel ratio. Apple notes that device presets are approximations: they may not reproduce details such as browser chrome, the keyboard, or device-specific form fields. Use Simulator or hardware when those details matter. See Apple’s Responsive Design Mode documentation for current controls and behavior.

  1. Open the page in Safari and focus its tab.
  2. If the Develop menu is missing, enable Safari’s web developer features in Settings.
  3. Choose Develop → Enter Responsive Design Mode, or press ⌃⌘R.
  4. Set the screen size to 744 × 1133 for portrait. Rotate the preview or swap the dimensions to use 1133 × 744 in landscape.
  5. Set the pixel ratio if you need a particular output density. Check the saved image’s actual dimensions before using it in a design review or publication.
  6. Capture the preview with your Mac’s screenshot workflow. For a more accurate Apple-platform preview, choose Open with Simulator from Responsive Design Mode and inspect the page there.

Safari’s custom size is expressed in screen points. Pixel ratio affects the rendered density and can affect which resolution-dependent assets or CSS rules a page uses. Do not assume that entering 744 × 1133 alone guarantees a 1488 × 2266 output file: confirm the resulting dimensions.

3. Capture with Chrome DevTools

Chrome Device Mode is convenient for viewport and full-size page captures. It emulates a mobile viewport on desktop; Google cautions that the page is not running on an actual mobile device. See Chrome’s Device Mode documentation.

  1. Open the page and DevTools.
  2. Click Toggle device toolbar.
  3. In the dimensions control, choose Responsive.
  4. Enter 744 for width and 1133 for height. These are CSS pixels for the layout viewport. Swap the values for landscape.
  5. Open More options. Choose Capture screenshot for the visible viewport or Capture a full size screenshot for the full page.

Use the viewport command when you need a device-sized first screen. Use the full-size command when the deliverable should include below-the-fold content. Browser controls and DevTools panels are not part of the captured page.

4. Capture directly on iPad or inspect it from a Mac

When the question concerns the real iPad’s browser behavior, capture or inspect on the device itself. Apple Support documents taking a screenshot on iPad and choosing a Full Page capture for a webpage in Safari when that option is available: Take a screenshot on iPad.

For remote inspection, enable Web Inspector on the iPad, connect it to a Mac, and select its webpage from Safari’s Develop menu. Booted simulators can also appear there. Follow Apple’s guide to inspecting iOS and iPadOS for setup details.

5. Automate an iPad mini sized screenshot with code

For repeatable captures, use a browser automation tool that lets you set the viewport. The following complete Playwright example uses Node.js, opens a page, sets a 744 × 1133 CSS-pixel viewport, and saves the visible viewport to a PNG. It requires Node.js and Playwright installed in the project.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';

const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage({
  viewport: { width: 744, height: 1133 },
  deviceScaleFactor: 2,
});

try {
  await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle', timeout: 60000 });
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'ipad-mini.png' });
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

The viewport controls the CSS layout size; deviceScaleFactor: 2 requests a 2× raster output in browser automation, producing nominally 1488 × 2266 pixels for a viewport capture. A page can still choose different image assets or render differently according to browser and platform. Replace https://example.com with the page you own or are authorized to capture.

To capture the complete document instead of one screen, change the screenshot call to:

await page.screenshot({ path: 'ipad-mini-full.png', fullPage: true });

For landscape, change the viewport to { width: 1133, height: 744 }. Full-page screenshots can be very tall and use more memory; if the page is extremely long, consider capturing sections or using a PDF workflow.

6. Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can capture PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. To request an iPad mini portrait viewport, use its viewport option; check the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the current parameter spelling and account setup.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" \
  -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY \
  --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com \
  -d width=744 \
  -d height=1133 \
  -d device_scale_factor=2 \
  -d format=png \
  -o ipad-mini.png
import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={
        "access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY",
        "url": "https://stripe.com",
        "width": 744,
        "height": 1133,
        "device_scale_factor": 2,
        "format": "png",
    },
    timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("ipad-mini.png", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({
  access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY',
  url: 'https://stripe.com',
  width: '744',
  height: '1133',
  device_scale_factor: '2',
  format: 'png',
});
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
await Bun.write('ipad-mini.png', new Uint8Array(await res.arrayBuffer()));

These examples request the CSS viewport and 2× output density. Verify option names and supported output settings in the linked docs for your account. ScreenshotNeo accepts the parameter names other screenshot APIs use to make switching easier. Its available options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, device presets and custom viewport, output formats, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, caching, and async jobs. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture by default behavior, with each step configurable. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers report the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

7. Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause Fix
The page layout looks too wide or narrow Physical pixels were entered as the CSS viewport, or portrait and landscape dimensions were mixed up. Use 744 × 1133 CSS pixels/points for portrait; reserve 1488 × 2266 for a 2× raster output. Swap width and height for landscape.
The saved file is not 1488 × 2266 The tool used a different pixel ratio, captured a different area, or saved a viewport at 1×. Set or inspect pixel ratio/device scale factor, then check the image dimensions. A full-page image will be taller than 2266 pixels.
The screenshot cuts off content A viewport capture was used for a page that extends below the fold. Use full-size/full-page capture. For an iPad Safari capture, choose Full Page when offered.
A desktop preview differs from the iPad Desktop emulation does not reproduce every iPadOS, Safari, browser-chrome, keyboard, or device-specific behavior. Confirm with iPadOS Simulator or a physical iPad mini, especially for platform-specific layout or input behavior.
Some images are missing in automation Lazy-loaded content may not have entered the viewport or finished loading before capture. Scroll through the page or use the screenshot service’s lazy-image loading option; wait for the page’s relevant content before saving.
The automation times out at network idle Analytics, ads, or streaming connections can keep network activity alive. Use a bounded timeout and wait for a specific selector or a short delay after navigation rather than requiring network idle on every site.
The Safari Develop menu or connected iPad is missing Developer features or Web Inspector are not enabled, or the device is not connected/available. Enable Safari developer features on Mac and Web Inspector on iPad; reconnect and check that the target page is open.
An API request returns an error or unexpected output Missing/invalid API key, unsupported parameter spelling, inaccessible target, or failed page load. Check the key, consult the API docs for option names, inspect the HTTP status and response headers, and retry only after addressing the page or parameter issue.

8. Performance, reliability, and cost

  • Keep viewport captures small when you only need the first screen. Full-page captures contain more pixels and may take longer to render or transfer.
  • Wait for what matters. Network idle is convenient but can be unreliable on pages with persistent requests. Waiting for a visible selector is often a better signal when the page has a clear content landmark.
  • Repeat captures under consistent conditions. Use the same viewport, scale factor, browser, wait condition, and page state when comparing versions. Dynamic ads, personalization, and animation can change captures.
  • Emulation is a preview, not a device guarantee. Use Simulator or hardware for checks where Safari or iPadOS behavior affects the result.
  • Choose capture cost based on frequency and control needs. Safari, Chrome, and local browser automation use the tools already available on your machine. An API is useful for repeatable or server-side jobs. ScreenshotNeo’s listed plans are Free: 1,000/month; Starter: $5 for 3,000; Growth: $15 for 15,000; Pro: $39 for 60,000; Scale: $99 for 250,000; Business: $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free. Only clean shots are billed under the stated service rules.

9. Frequently asked questions

What size is an iPad mini screenshot?

For the current 8.3-inch iPad mini, the portrait layout is 744 × 1133 points. At 2× that corresponds to 1488 × 2266 image pixels. A full-page screenshot can be taller than those dimensions.

Should I enter 2266 × 1488 in the browser?

No, not for a standard portrait layout viewport. That is the physical display resolution in landscape orientation. Use 744 × 1133 for portrait layout and set pixel ratio separately when needed.

Can I get an exact iPad mini screenshot from Chrome on a desktop?

Chrome can preview the dimensions and capture a page, but its Device Mode is desktop emulation. Use Simulator or an actual iPad mini when device-specific accuracy matters.

How do I capture an entire webpage on iPad?

Take a Safari screenshot on iPad and select the Full Page option when it is available for that webpage.
