How to Change the Default Screenshot Tool in Windows

Stop Print Screen from opening Snipping Tool, understand every Windows screenshot shortcut, and choose the right capture workflow.

Short answer: Windows does not provide one system-wide setting that redirects every screenshot shortcut to an app of your choice. To stop the Print Screen key from opening Snipping Tool, open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and turn off Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. This changes the documented Print Screen behavior; it does not replace every Windows screenshot shortcut.

Change what the Print Screen key does

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Open Accessibility.
  3. Select Keyboard.
  4. Find Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping.
  5. Set the switch to Off.
  6. Press Print Screen to test the result.

Microsoft documents this control for Windows 10 and Windows 11. The wording or location can vary between releases, so use Settings search for Print Screen if the option is not immediately visible.

What this setting changes—and what it does not

The Accessibility keyboard switch controls the action assigned to the Print Screen key. It does not create a universal “default screenshot app” selector. Windows has several independent shortcuts, and each can perform a different action.

Shortcut Result Controlled by the Print Screen switch?
Print Screen Screenshot or screen-snipping action, depending on the setting and device Yes, for this key’s documented behavior
Windows + Shift + S Opens the Snipping Tool overlay for an image selection No
Windows + Shift + R Opens the Snipping Tool overlay for a video clip No
Windows + PrtScn Captures the full screen and can save it under Pictures\Screenshots, depending on hardware No
Alt + PrtScn Copies the active window to the clipboard No
Fn + Windows + Space Alternative full-screen capture on some keyboards without a Print Screen key No

Choose the shortcut for the capture you need

Selected area or window

Press Windows + Shift + S. Select a rectangle, window, or full-screen region in the Snipping Tool overlay. You can then edit, save, or share the snip.

Full-screen image saved to disk

Press Windows + PrtScn. On supported hardware, Windows saves the image in Pictures\Screenshots. If nothing happens, try the keyboard’s Fn modifier or use the Snipping Tool overlay.

Active-window capture

Press Alt + PrtScn to copy the active window to the clipboard, then paste it into Paint, an editor, or another application.

Video clip

Press Windows + Shift + R to open the Snipping Tool video capture overlay.

Can a third-party app become the default?

Windows’ Default apps page associates applications with file types and link types. It does not document a universal screenshot-app association. Some capture applications offer their own hotkey settings, background services, or replacement for a particular shortcut, but support depends on the application, keyboard, permissions, and Windows build.

Therefore, first identify the exact shortcut you want to change. Turn off the Print Screen switch for the built-in behavior, then configure the third-party app’s documented hotkey if it supports one. Do not assume that changing one setting redirects Windows + Shift + S, Windows + PrtScn, or video capture.

Verification checklist

  • Confirm the Print Screen switch is Off or On according to the behavior you want.
  • Test Print Screen separately from Windows + Shift + S.
  • Check whether your keyboard requires Fn.
  • Look in Pictures\Screenshots after a full-screen capture.
  • Paste clipboard captures into Paint to confirm that the image was copied.
  • Check the capture app’s own hotkey and startup settings if you use a third-party tool.

Troubleshooting

Reopen Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and verify that Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping is Off. Test the physical key again; some keyboards send a different key code or require Fn.

The setting is missing

Use Settings search for Print Screen or screen snipping. Windows release differences can change the wording and placement. Confirm that you are editing the keyboard accessibility settings rather than the Default apps page.

Windows + Shift + S still opens the overlay

That shortcut is separate from the Print Screen toggle. The documented switch does not disable or redirect it. Use the Snipping Tool settings or the third-party application’s own shortcut controls if available.

Windows + PrtScn does not save a file

Your hardware may require Fn, or the keyboard may not expose a conventional Print Screen key. Try the documented alternative Fn + Windows + Space, or use Windows + Shift + S and save the result manually.

Alt + PrtScn produces no visible file

This shortcut copies the active window to the clipboard; it does not necessarily create a file. Open Paint or another editor and paste the clipboard contents.

A third-party capture tool does not receive the shortcut

Check whether its background process is running, whether another application already owns the hotkey, and whether Windows or security software blocked its startup. Consult that product’s current documentation for supported shortcuts and Windows-version requirements.

Automate website screenshots instead of capturing your desktop

If your goal is a repeatable image of a web page rather than a snapshot of the Windows desktop, an API avoids keyboard focus, monitor resolution, and clipboard issues. ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. Its capture flow accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Or skip the browser setup

Use the API documented at ScreenshotNeo’s developer docs:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo also supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-element captures, dark mode, device presets, custom viewports, retina scale, PDF options, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs, signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage data, and an OpenAPI specification. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

There are 1,000 free screenshots each month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Performance, reliability, and cost notes

  • Desktop shortcuts are immediate but depend on the active display, keyboard, clipboard, and local permissions.
  • For website automation, choose a wait condition or delay when pages render asynchronously, and use caching with a TTL when the same URL is captured repeatedly.
  • Use bulk capture for batches of up to 100 URLs per call and asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks for longer workflows.
  • Inspect X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed to distinguish a clean billed capture from a bot check, blank page, timeout, failed load, or cache hit.
  • For sensitive sites, pass only the headers, cookies, authorization, timezone, and geolocation required by the page.

FAQ

Is there a Windows setting called “default screenshot app”?

No universal selector is documented. Windows documents the Print Screen screen-snipping toggle and separate shortcuts for other capture actions.

Will turning off the Print Screen switch disable Snipping Tool?

No. It changes the Print Screen key behavior. Windows + Shift + S remains a separate shortcut.

Where are Windows + PrtScn screenshots stored?

Microsoft identifies Pictures\Screenshots on supported hardware.

Can ScreenshotNeo capture my Windows desktop?

No. ScreenshotNeo captures web pages and generates PDFs through its API or MCP tools. Use Windows shortcuts or a desktop capture application for your local screen.

What happens when a ScreenshotNeo page cannot load?

Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the verdict and billing status in headers.
