How to Change Where Screenshots Are Saved
Change the default screenshot folder on Windows, macOS, or Chromebook—and troubleshoot apps that keep saving somewhere else.
Short answer: the save location belongs to the screenshot tool and operating system you use. Change it in Windows Snipping Tool, macOS Screenshot, or Chromebook Screen Capture settings. A folder change for one tool does not automatically change every screenshot shortcut or third-party app.
1. Identify the screenshot tool first
Before changing a folder, identify both your operating system and the tool that creates the image:
- Windows: Snipping Tool, the Print Screen key, Xbox Game Bar, a browser extension, or a third-party capture app.
- macOS: the Screenshot app opened with Shift+Command+5, keyboard shortcuts, Preview, or another app.
- Chromebook: the built-in Screen Capture tool, opened with Shift+Ctrl+Show windows, or an extension.
Each tool can have its own destination. If you change Snipping Tool and a later capture still appears elsewhere, the other shortcut is probably using a different application.
2. Windows 10 and Windows 11
Change Snipping Tool’s automatic-save location
- Open Snipping Tool.
- Select See More (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Settings.
- Find the automatic-save or default Screenshots-folder setting and select the folder you want.
- Take a test snip and confirm that the new file appears in the selected folder.
Microsoft says that after a snip is captured it is automatically saved to the Screenshots folder, and its Snipping Tool settings control this behavior. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions for the current interface.
Save one capture to a different folder
If you only need a different destination for one image:
- Capture the screen in Snipping Tool.
- Open the capture and select Save as.
- Choose a folder, enter a filename, select the format, and save.
This creates an additional copy in the folder you choose; it does not necessarily change where future automatic saves go.
Move the Windows Screenshots known folder
Windows also exposes a folder-location method:
- Open Pictures and then Screenshots.
- Right-click Screenshots and select Properties.
- Open the Location tab.
- Select Move, choose the destination, and apply the change.
A Microsoft Q&A community answer describes this as applying to Snipping Tool and some third-party screenshot apps. Treat it as a method for the Windows Screenshots folder, not a universal setting for every capture shortcut or program. Back up existing screenshots before moving a large folder, and make sure the destination is available before capturing.
3. macOS
The built-in Screenshot app is available in macOS Mojave 10.14 and later.
- Press Shift+Command+5.
- Select Options.
- Under Save to, choose a suggested folder or select another location.
- Capture a test screenshot and check the destination.
Apple identifies the desktop as the default and documents changing it through the Screenshot app’s Options menu. See Apple’s screenshot instructions.
For a one-off move, wait for the floating thumbnail after capture, then drag that thumbnail to another folder or application. This moves or shares that individual result without changing the default destination.
4. Chromebook
Chromebooks save screenshots and recordings to Downloads by default.
- Press Shift+Ctrl+Show windows to open Screen Capture.
- Open Settings in the capture controls.
- Choose the folder for screenshots and recordings.
- Capture a test image and verify it in the selected folder.
Google’s Chromebook screenshot and screen-recording help documents Downloads as the default and the Screen Capture settings used to choose another folder. If your Chromebook is managed by a school or employer, administrator policies or a restricted Files app can limit available destinations.
5. When changing the folder does not work
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The screenshot still goes to the old folder. | A different shortcut or application captured it. | Check the app that created the file, then change that app’s own destination. |
| Windows has no Location tab. | You opened a normal folder or a tool-managed folder. | Use Snipping Tool’s See More → Settings route instead. |
| Only one screenshot moved. | You used Save as or dragged a thumbnail. | Change the default destination in the capture tool for future screenshots. |
| The selected folder is unavailable. | The drive, network share, removable disk, or cloud folder is disconnected. | Reconnect it, choose a local folder, and take a test capture. |
| Files appear with unexpected names or formats. | The tool controls filename and image format separately from location. | Change format or naming options in that tool; changing the folder does not change them. |
| Cloud storage shows duplicates. | The screenshot folder is inside a synced directory, or another app imports the image. | Check sync and import rules, then use a local folder if you need one copy. |
| A browser extension saves elsewhere. | Extensions commonly have their own download or export settings. | Open the extension’s settings and change its download location or browser download preference. |
Quick verification checklist
- Capture using the exact shortcut you normally use.
- Open the file’s properties or information panel to identify its path and creating application.
- Confirm the destination folder exists and you can write to it.
- Capture once after changing the setting; do not rely on an old file remaining in the previous folder.
- If several tools are installed, configure each one separately.
6. Automating screenshots with an API instead of a desktop folder
Desktop settings control where a local screenshot is written. For automated website captures, the destination is controlled by your code: save the HTTP response body wherever your process has write access. ScreenshotNeo returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request and also supports full-page and element captures, custom waits, headers, cookies, device settings, and other capture controls.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Use an absolute path such as -o ./screenshots/stripe.webp when you want a particular local folder. Read the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request parameters and response details.
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Replace shot.webp with a path such as screenshots/stripe.webp; create the directory first if it does not exist.
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.mkdir('screenshots', { recursive: true });
await fs.writeFile('screenshots/stripe.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));
7. Or skip the browser setup
Use ScreenshotNeo when you need website screenshots in a chosen local or server folder without maintaining a browser. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server lets AI agents such as Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots, and every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
8. Reliability, performance, and cost considerations
- Reliability: keep automated output in a directory your process can write to, and check the HTTP status before treating the file as an image.
- Performance: writing to a local SSD is usually faster than a disconnected network share or a folder being synchronized immediately. For batches, use predictable filenames and separate temporary files from final output.
- Duplicates: avoid configuring both the screenshot tool and a sync/import rule to copy the same file unless that duplication is intentional.
- Costs: changing a desktop save folder has no service charge. API captures consume the provider’s plan allowance; ScreenshotNeo bills only clean shots and does not bill bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, or cache hits.
- Security: do not place API keys in filenames, public folders, browser code, or shell history shared with other users. Store them in environment variables or a secret manager.
9. FAQ
Can one setting control screenshots from every app?
No. The capture application normally owns the destination. Configure each app or shortcut that you use.
Why do screenshots keep returning to Desktop on a Mac?
The Screenshot app’s Save to option is still set to Desktop, or another application is creating the image. Check both the shortcut and the app.
Can I change where a single screenshot goes without changing defaults?
Yes. Use Save as on Windows, drag the macOS floating thumbnail, or move the completed file in the Files app.
Does changing a folder rename existing screenshots?
No. It changes the destination for future captures; existing files remain where they are unless you move them.
Is an API useful if I only want screenshots in a specific folder?
Yes, when captures are automated. Your script chooses the output path, while the API handles page loading and rendering.
