How to Change Thumbnail Settings
Change YouTube video or Shorts thumbnails in Studio, choose the right image settings, and fix upload or display problems.
You change a YouTube thumbnail in YouTube Studio. Open Content, select the video, choose Edit, replace the image under Thumbnail, then click SAVE. Custom uploads require a verified account. For a Short, switch the Content view to Shorts before opening the edit controls.
Change a regular YouTube video thumbnail
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Content in the left menu.
- Select the video whose thumbnail you want to change.
- Open the video’s edit control.
- In the Thumbnail section, choose Upload file to use your own image, or Get suggestions to choose an automatically generated option.
- Review the preview and click SAVE.
YouTube describes custom thumbnails as a quick snapshot of your content. If Upload file is missing, verify the channel and check whether a daily custom-thumbnail limit applies. Limits can vary by country or region and by channel history. See YouTube Help’s custom-thumbnail guidance for account requirements.
Change a YouTube Shorts thumbnail
- Open YouTube Studio and select Content.
- Choose Shorts at the top of the page.
- Open the edit control for the Short.
- Under Thumbnail, choose Upload file.
- Select the image and click SAVE.
YouTube recommends a 9:16 image for an uploaded Shorts thumbnail. Shorts use a different aspect ratio from standard landscape videos, so prepare a separate vertical image instead of simply cropping a 16:9 design.
Thumbnail image settings
| Content | Recommended size | Aspect ratio | Formats | Upload limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regular video | 3840 × 2160 pixels | 16:9 | JPG or PNG | 2 MB on mobile; 50 MB on desktop |
| YouTube Short | 2160 × 3840 pixels | 9:16 | JPG or PNG | 50 MB on desktop |
| Podcast thumbnail | Use the dimensions and format accepted in Studio | Usually landscape | JPG or PNG | 50 MB on desktop |
The minimum width for a regular video thumbnail is 640 pixels. The minimum height for a Shorts thumbnail is 640 pixels. A smaller file can still be accepted, but using the recommended dimensions gives YouTube enough resolution for large displays.
Choosing between a suggestion and a custom upload
- Get suggestions: YouTube selects frames from the video. This is quick and requires no separate image file.
- Upload file: You control the composition, subject, contrast and branding. The account must be verified, and the image must follow YouTube Community Guidelines.
What happens after you save
Thumbnail changes can take time to appear across YouTube. Refreshing Studio immediately does not guarantee that every surface has updated. A vertical video using a 16:9 custom thumbnail may receive an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore and Subscriptions. The custom image can still appear in the watch feed, watch history and on non-mobile platforms.
Check the video page in an incognito window or on another device after propagation. Compare the watch page with Home and subscription surfaces because YouTube can use different crops or generated images in those locations.
Fix common thumbnail problems
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Upload file is unavailable | The account is not verified, or a channel limit applies. | Complete account verification, then reload Studio. If the option remains unavailable, wait for a daily limit to reset and check regional or channel-history restrictions. |
| The file is rejected | Unsupported format, dimensions, file size or an invalid image. | Export a JPG or PNG, use 16:9 for a regular video or 9:16 for a Short, and stay below the device-specific size limit. |
| The new image is not visible yet | YouTube is still propagating the change or a cached surface is showing the previous image. | Wait, then check the watch page, Home, Explore and Subscriptions separately. Use a private window to avoid local cache. |
| The Short shows a cropped image | A landscape 16:9 image was supplied for a vertical video. | Upload a 9:16 Shorts thumbnail. YouTube may generate a 4:5 version for some mobile surfaces. |
| The thumbnail was removed or access was restricted | The image may violate Community Guidelines. | Remove nudity or sexually provocative material, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content. Repeated violations can remove custom-thumbnail privileges for 30 days or lead to account termination. |
| You reached a thumbnail limit | YouTube applies daily custom-thumbnail limits that can vary by region and channel history. | Wait until the limit resets, use an automatically generated suggestion temporarily, and avoid repeatedly re-uploading the same file. |
Thumbnail workflow checklist
- Verify the channel before planning a custom upload.
- Use 3840 × 2160 and 16:9 for a regular video.
- Use 2160 × 3840 and 9:16 for a Short.
- Export JPG or PNG and stay within the upload limit for your device.
- Keep the image compliant with YouTube Community Guidelines.
- Click SAVE and allow time for the change to propagate.
- Check several YouTube surfaces because vertical videos can receive different generated crops.
Or skip the browser setup
If your workflow needs screenshots of published video pages, release notes or thumbnail QA, ScreenshotNeo captures a URL through one API request. It accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
Read the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options. This is a screenshot service, so it does not change a YouTube thumbnail inside Studio; it helps you create reliable visual checks of the result.

FAQ
Can I change a thumbnail from the YouTube mobile app?
The upload limit differs by device. If the mobile app does not offer the control you need, use YouTube Studio on a computer, where video, Shorts and podcast thumbnails can be up to 50 MB.
Does changing a thumbnail change the video URL?
No. The thumbnail belongs to the existing video or Short; saving a new image does not create a new video URL.
Can I use the same image for a video and a Short?
You can upload the same artwork, but the recommended layouts differ: regular videos use 16:9 and Shorts use 9:16. A shared design should be exported in both ratios.
Why does YouTube show an old thumbnail in search?
Different YouTube surfaces update at different times. Wait for propagation, then check again in a private window and on another device.
What if I do not have a custom image?
Use Get suggestions for a regular video. YouTube will offer automatically generated frames that you can select and save.
