How to Change the Website Icon on Wix

Change your Wix favicon, choose the right image size, fix common problems, and understand when Google updates the icon.

To change the browser-tab icon on a Wix site, open your site dashboard and go to Settings → Website settings. Under Favicon, choose Upload Image, select your icon, and save. Publish the site before adding or replacing the favicon.

A custom favicon requires a Wix Premium plan and a connected domain. Free Wix sites use the Wix favicon.

Change the Wix favicon step by step

1. Prepare the icon file

Use a simple square image that remains recognizable at very small sizes. Wix accepts:

  • ICO
  • PNG
  • JPG
  • SVG

For non-SVG files, use square dimensions that are a multiple of 48 pixels, such as 48×48 or 96×96. PNG supports transparency. Google may rescale the favicon to 16×16 pixels in search results, so avoid fine detail and thin lettering.

2. Publish the site

In the Wix Editor or Studio Editor, publish the site if it has unpublished changes. Wix’s favicon instructions require the site to be published before adding a favicon.

3. Upload the favicon

  1. Open the Wix site dashboard.
  2. Go to Settings → Website settings.
  3. Find Favicon.
  4. Select Upload Image.
  5. Choose the prepared ICO, PNG, JPG or SVG file.
  6. Save the setting.

4. Check the result

Open the published site in a new private-browsing window. Check the browser tab and a bookmark created after the change. A browser may continue showing an older cached icon, so also test another browser or device.

Favicon versus other Wix site icons

The favicon is the small icon used in browser tabs and commonly associated with a site in search results. It is separate from the image used for bookmarks, mobile home-screen shortcuts and social sharing.

Browser tab and search icon

Use Settings → Website settings → Favicon. This is the setting described above.

Bookmark, mobile shortcut and social icon

For those uses, Wix documents a different path: Website settings → General social image, then Upload Image and Add Icon. Wix recommends 180×180 pixels for Apple devices and 192×192 pixels for Android devices.

Why your Wix favicon is not changing

Symptom Likely cause Fix
The Favicon setting is unavailable The site is on a free plan or has no connected domain. Wix requires a Premium plan and connected domain for a custom favicon.
The old icon still appears in your browser The browser or operating system cached the previous favicon. Open a private window, clear the site cache, or test another browser and device.
The icon looks blurry The source image is too small or contains detail that disappears when reduced. Use a square multiple of 48 pixels, simplify the artwork, and test it at 16×16 pixels.
The icon has an unwanted colored box The uploaded file includes a background. Use a PNG with transparency when the design needs a transparent background.
Google still shows the Wix icon Google has not recrawled the page or has not selected the new icon. Confirm that search engines can index the homepage, then consider resubmitting the sitemap in Google Search Console. Wix says Google controls crawling, indexation and display, so Wix cannot guarantee when the icon will appear.
The browser tab title changed but the icon did not A page title and a favicon are separate settings. Change the favicon under Website settings; changing a page title does not change the icon.

Design and file checklist

  • Use a square canvas.
  • Choose ICO, PNG, JPG or SVG.
  • For non-SVG files, use dimensions that are multiples of 48 pixels.
  • Check that the mark is recognizable at 16×16 pixels.
  • Use PNG transparency when the design should have no background.
  • Keep the same recognizable symbol across favicon and mobile/social images, while uploading each in its documented setting.

How long does a new Wix icon take to appear in Google?

Uploading the favicon and seeing it in Google are separate events. Google updates its stored version after a later crawl and decides whether and when to display the icon. Wix does not provide a guaranteed timetable. If the icon remains absent, check that the homepage is available to search engines and consider resubmitting the sitemap through Google Search Console.

Verify the published page with a screenshot

A screenshot can confirm that the published page loads correctly, but a screenshot of the page itself cannot force Google to refresh its favicon index. Capture the homepage after publishing and inspect the browser manually for the tab icon.

DIY browser check

  1. Publish the Wix site.
  2. Open the homepage in a clean browser profile.
  3. Bookmark it and reopen the bookmark.
  4. Check the page on desktop and mobile.
  5. If Google is the concern, inspect the homepage’s indexability and sitemap separately.

Or skip the browser setup

Use ScreenshotNeo to capture the published Wix homepage with one API request. Its cleanup steps remove cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server so Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients can take screenshots, inspect pages and create PDFs.

Performance, reliability and cost notes

  • Browser cache: A favicon is a tiny asset, but browsers can retain it independently of page content. Test in a private window when verifying a replacement.
  • Google timing: Search display depends on Google’s crawl and selection process, not only on the Wix upload.
  • Image clarity: A simpler mark at a correct square size is more reliable than a detailed logo reduced to a tiny icon.
  • Screenshot verification: Set a request timeout appropriate for the page and use a wait condition when Wix content loads asynchronously.
  • Screenshot cost: ScreenshotNeo bills only clean shots. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers state the verdict and billing result.
