How to Check a Website’s View Count

Learn how to check page views for your site in Google Analytics 4 and estimate competitor traffic with Similarweb.

By the ScreenshotNeo team1 October 20267 min read

For a website you own, use Google Analytics 4. Open Reports → Realtime pages to see views and active users from the last 30 minutes. For a site you do not control, use a public estimator such as Similarweb and label the result as an estimate. Public tools cannot access another company’s private analytics data.

Choose the right method

Situation Best method What you get
You own or administer the site Google Analytics 4 First-party page views, active users and historical reports
You need a live diagnostic GA4 Realtime pages Views and active users received in the last 30 minutes
You are researching another site Similarweb Website Traffic Checker Modeled traffic estimates, rankings, keywords and referring domains
You need repeatable competitor reporting Similarweb Page Views API Estimated daily, weekly, monthly or last-28-days page views

Check views for a website you own with Google Analytics 4

Use the Realtime pages report

  1. Sign in to Google Analytics.
  2. Open Reports.
  3. Select Realtime pages.
  4. Read the key metrics card and the page-path table.

Google describes this report as showing the pages users are currently viewing and the number of users viewing each page in real time. The key metrics card covers the last 30 minutes; the table breaks activity down by page, including views and active users.

Use Realtime pages for a live check after publishing, launching a campaign or fixing tracking. It is not a monthly total. For historical totals, open the relevant standard GA4 report, set an explicit date range and keep the metric definition consistent.

Read the numbers correctly

  • Views or pageviews: page loads. A reload can create another view.
  • Active users: users who meet Google Analytics’ activity rules during the selected window.
  • Sessions or visits: visits grouped according to the analytics platform’s session rules.
  • Unique visitors: an estimated people or device count, depending on the platform and settings.

Do not call page views visitors. A single person can generate many page views, and one page view can be generated by a visitor who returns or refreshes the page.

For historical page-view totals

  1. Choose the exact date range, such as the previous calendar month.
  2. Choose the page or page group you want to measure.
  3. Use the same property, data stream, geography and device scope each time.
  4. Record the metric name and filters beside the number.
  5. Compare like with like: page views to page views, users to users and sessions to sessions.

If a number changes after you first view it, check reporting latency, filters, consent settings, internal traffic rules and whether the property received data from every page.

Estimate another website’s traffic with Similarweb

You cannot see a competitor’s private Google Analytics reports unless the owner shares them. Similarweb’s public checker provides a modeled estimate based on direct measurement, a contributory network, partnerships and public-data extraction.

  1. Open Similarweb’s Website Traffic Checker.
  2. Enter the domain without using a private analytics login.
  3. Choose the correct domain and select Analyze traffic.
  4. Record the displayed period, country, device coverage and whether subdomains are included.

The checker can return traffic statistics, rankings, SEO keywords, referring domains and website technologies. Treat the result as directional: it is useful for comparing scale and trends, not for claiming an exact counter.

Understand Similarweb’s page-view definition

Similarweb defines a pageview as a request to load or reload one page. A refresh in the same visit counts as another pageview. Its reported pageviews are averages across pages for the selected analysis period.

When you publish or share an estimate, state all of the following:

  • Source and tool
  • Metric name: page views, visits, sessions or users
  • Date range
  • Country or geography
  • Desktop, mobile or combined device coverage
  • Domain, subdomain or main-domain scope
  • First-party measurement or modeled estimate
  • Verification status, if shown

Use the Similarweb Page Views API for repeatable reports

Similarweb documents a Page Views API that supports daily, weekly, monthly and last-28-days retrieval, date ranges, country filters, main-domain-only scope and an option to show shared Google Analytics data. You need an API key, and requests may consume credits.

Build your report around a configuration file or spreadsheet containing the domain, period, countries, device scope and whether the request is for the main domain only. Store the response with the request date so later readers can distinguish a newly retrieved estimate from an older one.

Because API access details and authentication parameters depend on your Similarweb account, use the endpoint and credentials shown in Similarweb’s current API reference rather than copying an undocumented URL into production.

Verify whether a number is first-party or estimated

A site owner can connect Google Analytics to Similarweb privately for benchmarking or publicly to display verified traffic and engagement data. Similarweb says synchronization can take up to 48 hours. A public checker result without a verification stamp should be treated as an estimate.

Question Why it matters
Who owns the measurement? GA4 data from the property owner is first-party; a public checker is modeled.
What is counted? Views, visits, sessions and users answer different questions.
Which period? A live 30-minute window cannot be compared directly with a monthly estimate.
Which scope? Country, device and subdomain choices can materially change the result.
Is it verified? A verification connection provides stronger evidence than an unverified estimate.

Capture an analytics page automatically

If you need an image of a GA4 or Similarweb report for a recurring report, you can automate a browser with Playwright. The browser must be authenticated, and you should keep credentials in environment variables or a secret manager.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';

const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 1000 } });
await page.goto(process.env.ANALYTICS_URL, { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'view-count-report.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();

For a production workflow, wait for a stable report selector instead of relying only on network idle, and make sure the account has permission to view the report.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo can capture a report page with one GET request. Its cookie and consent handling accepts the banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and options.

if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`HTTP ${res.status}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('report.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));

You can add options for a full page, a specific CSS selector, a device preset, dark mode, custom CSS or JavaScript, waits, headers, cookies, a user agent, timezone and geolocation. Use a cache TTL for repeated captures, async jobs with signed webhooks for long reports, and PDF options when the deliverable is a document.

Troubleshooting

GA4 shows zero users or views

Confirm that the correct property and data stream are selected, the page sends the GA4 tag, consent has been granted where required, and internal-traffic filters are not excluding your visit. Realtime reports cover only the last 30 minutes, so an older visit will not appear there.

The number is lower than your server logs

Server logs count requests, while analytics counts events accepted by the tracking setup. Caches, bots, blocked scripts, consent choices, redirects and filtered internal traffic can create a difference. Compare the same URL, period and timezone before investigating further.

Similarweb has no result

Check the spelling and domain level, then try the registered main domain. Smaller sites may have insufficient modeled data. Do not replace a missing estimate with a made-up zero.

Two traffic tools disagree

Compare metric definitions, dates, countries, devices, subdomains and verification status. Different modeled datasets can reasonably produce different estimates.

The automated screenshot is blank

Wait for the report selector or a known delay, provide required cookies or headers, and check whether the page requires an interactive login or blocks automated browsers. ScreenshotNeo exposes page verdict and billing headers so failed or blank captures can be identified.

Performance, reliability and cost notes

  • Use GA4 Realtime pages for quick checks and standard reports for historical analysis.
  • Cache recurring report captures when the underlying page does not change often.
  • For many URLs, use bulk capture instead of launching a separate browser for every page.
  • Use async jobs and signed webhooks when a capture can take longer than a normal request.
  • For estimates, save the retrieval date and all filters so the report can be reproduced.
  • ScreenshotNeo’s free tier includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans begin at $5 for 3,000. Only clean shots are billed, while bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing.

FAQ

Can I see exactly how many views a competitor gets?

Usually no. Without the owner’s analytics access, use a public modeled estimate and label it clearly.

Are page views the same as visitors?

No. Page views count loads or reloads; visitors or users measure people or devices under different platform rules.

How recent is GA4 Realtime?

The documented Realtime pages window covers the last 30 minutes.

Should I include subdomains?

Only if the comparison requires them. Record the scope because including or excluding subdomains changes totals.

Can I use a screenshot as the source of truth?

A screenshot preserves what a report displayed at one moment. Keep the underlying analytics export or API response when the number must be audited.
