How to Enter Full-Screen Mode in Chrome With a Keyboard Shortcut

Use the right Chrome full-screen shortcut for Windows, Linux, Mac, or Chromebook, plus fixes and a repeatable screenshot method.

Quick answer: On Windows and Linux, press F11 to enter Chrome full-screen and press F11 again to leave it. On a Mac, use Fn + F (shown by Google as “Fn + f”); ⌘ + Control + F is also documented. On ChromeOS, press the dedicated full-screen key in the top row.

Chrome full-screen hides the browser frame, tabs and (on ChromeOS) launchers so the page gets the available display area. These shortcuts control the Chrome window; they are different from a video player’s own full-screen button.

Shortcut by operating system

System Enter full-screen Exit full-screen Notes
Windows F11 F11 or press and hold Esc On some laptops, hold Fn to send F11.
Linux F11 F11 or press and hold Esc Desktop keyboard settings can change function-row behavior.
macOS Fn + F; also ⌘ + Control + F Repeat the shortcut or press and hold Esc Google’s shortcut table displays the first form as “Fn + f”.
ChromeOS Dedicated full-screen key in the top row Press the same key again, or use the on-screen exit control The key is commonly marked with a rectangle or corner marks.

Windows and Linux: use F11

  1. Focus the Chrome window by clicking anywhere in the page.
  2. Press F11. Chrome removes its tabs, address bar and other frame controls.
  3. Press F11 again to restore the normal window. If that does not work, press and hold Esc.

On a notebook with media controls on the function row, try Fn + F11. If the keyboard has an Fn-lock mode, toggle that mode or change the function-key setting in the laptop firmware or operating-system utility.

Mac: Fn + F or Command-Control-F

  1. Click the Chrome window so it receives the keystroke.
  2. Press Fn + F. On some Mac keyboards this is simply the key labeled F with the globe/Fn modifier.
  3. To leave full-screen, repeat the shortcut or press and hold Esc.

Google also lists ⌘ + Control + F for macOS full-screen. Try that form when the Fn shortcut is intercepted by a keyboard utility or when you prefer the macOS system-style command.

Chromebook: press the full-screen key

  1. Find the dedicated full-screen key in the top keyboard row. It has a rectangle/corners icon on many Chromebook layouts.
  2. Press it once to hide tabs and launchers.
  3. Press it again to return to the standard Chrome view.

Chromebook models vary, so look at the icon rather than relying on the key’s position. An external keyboard may map this action to a function key; consult that keyboard’s layout if the dedicated key is absent.

How to exit when the shortcut seems stuck

  • Press and hold Esc for several seconds. Chrome documents this as an exit method on Windows/Linux and Mac.
  • Move the pointer to the top edge. Chrome may reveal the frame and an exit-full-screen control.
  • Press the same toggle key again: F11 on Windows/Linux, Fn + F or ⌘ + Control + F on Mac, and the dedicated key on ChromeOS.
  • If Chrome is unresponsive, use the operating system’s normal window-switching shortcut, then close or restart Chrome. Unsaved form data may be lost.

Browser full-screen versus video full-screen

Chrome full-screen changes the whole browser window. A YouTube, Vimeo or HTML5 video full-screen button changes only the video element and can work even when Chrome’s tabs remain visible. If you need a screenshot of the entire page, use Chrome’s window shortcut; if you only need the movie, use the player control.

Capture a full-screen view for documentation

For a one-off image, enter full-screen with the shortcut above and use your operating system’s screenshot command. For repeatable captures, a browser automation script is more reliable because it fixes the viewport, waits for content and saves a named file.

Minimal Playwright example (Node.js)

import { chromium } from 'playwright';

const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 }, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();

Use a fixed viewport instead of relying on a person’s monitor. Add an explicit wait for a selector when a chart, font or image appears after navigation; avoid an unlimited wait because a page can keep connections open indefinitely.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo provides a single request for a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

See the ScreenshotNeo API docs for all options, including full-page lazy-image loading, CSS-selector element shots, device presets, dark mode, custom CSS/JavaScript, waits, request blocking, headers/cookies, geolocation, resizing, caching, signed links, async jobs, bulk capture and PDF settings.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' }); const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

An MCP server also lets Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf. Free accounts include 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Troubleshooting checklist

Symptom Likely cause Fix
F11 changes volume or brightness Function row is in media-key mode Hold Fn, enable Fn-lock, or switch the keyboard’s function-key mode.
Nothing happens Another app or extension captured the key Focus Chrome, disable the conflicting shortcut, or use the menu’s full-screen control.
Esc does not exit immediately Chrome requires a press-and-hold Hold Esc for several seconds, then try the toggle key.
Only a video becomes full-screen The player control was used Press Chrome’s OS-specific shortcut for window full-screen.
Automation screenshot is blank or cropped Capture ran before content loaded or viewport was too small Wait for a stable selector/network idle, set an explicit viewport, and use fullPage: true.
ScreenshotNeo response is not an image Target failed, timed out or triggered a bot check Inspect X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed; check the URL, access key and target availability.

Performance, reliability and cost notes

  • Keyboard full-screen is immediate but manual and tied to one display. Automation adds launch time; reuse a browser process for batches and wait only for the content you need.
  • Long network-idle waits can delay pages with analytics or live connections. Prefer a selector or short delay when you know the readiness condition.
  • For ScreenshotNeo, choose a cache TTL for repeated URLs, use bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, and use async jobs with signed webhooks for long-running batches. Clean shots alone are billed; failed loads and cache hits are free.
  • Protect API keys, set timeouts, and retry transient network errors with backoff. Do not retry a deterministic bot block indefinitely.

FAQ
