This guide explains how to capture a website screenshot in Chrome on Windows 11. For the entire webpage, including content below the visible screen, use Chrome DevTools and its “Capture full size screenshot” command. For only the visible screen, a window, or a selected area, use Windows Snipping Tool with Windows+Shift+S.

1. Capture a full webpage in Chrome

  1. Open the webpage in Chrome and wait for the content you need to appear.
  2. Open DevTools with Ctrl+Shift+I or F12. Chrome lists both as Windows/Linux shortcuts for opening DevTools. Chrome DevTools keyboard shortcuts.
  3. Press Ctrl+Shift+P to open the DevTools Command Menu.
  4. Type screenshot, then select Capture full size screenshot from the results. This specific command sequence is described in a Chrome Help Community response; Google notes that community content may not be verified or current. Chrome Help Community: screenshot.
  5. Chrome generates an image of the full page and downloads it. Check Chrome’s download shelf or the Downloads folder to open it.

The full-size command is for a webpage capture that extends beyond the current viewport. It differs from capturing a visible screen: the result can be much taller than your monitor.

Before you capture

  • Scroll through the page once if it uses lazy-loaded images or content that appears only when brought into view. Some pages do not load every section until you scroll.
  • Wait for animations, embedded content, or a page transition to finish if their final state matters.
  • Check that the intended page, account state, and viewport are active. A screenshot captures what the browser can render, including content that may be private or personalized.

2. Capture the visible screen or a selected area

  1. Press Windows+Shift+S to open the Snipping Tool overlay. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.
  2. Choose a capture mode: rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip, or full-screen snip.
  3. Select or capture the area you need. The capture is copied to the Snipping Tool window, where you can edit, save, or share it.

Snipping Tool captures what is visible on the screen; it does not turn a long webpage into one continuous full-page image. Use DevTools for that. Use Snipping Tool when you need a quick crop, browser window, or entire display.

Which method should you choose?

Need Use Result
Entire webpage, including below the fold Chrome DevTools: Capture full size screenshot A tall image of the page
Visible portion or a specific region Windows Snipping Tool A selected screen area
One browser window or the whole display Windows Snipping Tool A window or screen capture
Repeatable captures from code or an automated workflow Screenshot API An image or PDF returned by a request

3. Troubleshoot common screenshot problems

Problem Likely cause What to do
DevTools does not open The shortcut may be intercepted, or the keyboard focus is in a context that handles it differently. Try F12, Ctrl+Shift+I, or right-click the webpage and choose Inspect.
The Command Menu does not appear DevTools may not have focus, or the shortcut was pressed before it opened. Click inside DevTools, then press Ctrl+Shift+P again.
“Capture full size screenshot” is not listed The command may not be found from the current DevTools context or Chrome version. With DevTools focused, open the Command Menu and search for screenshot. If the command is unavailable, use Snipping Tool for the visible area or capture the page with a screenshot service.
The lower part of the image is blank or images are missing Content may load only on scroll, depend on scripts, or take time to render. Scroll the page to prompt lazy content to load, return to the top, wait for loading to finish, then capture again. Dynamic pages can still change during capture.
The image is too large or difficult to share A full-page image can be very tall, increasing file size and making text small when viewed as a whole. Capture only the needed section, or split the page into several Snipping Tool captures. For a document, consider printing to PDF when an image is not required.
Windows+Shift+S does not open Snipping Tool The shortcut may be intercepted or the app may not be available in the current session. Open Snipping Tool from the Windows Start menu and choose a capture mode there.
The capture has the wrong content The page changed, a dialog covered it, or the wrong window or region was selected. Dismiss overlays if appropriate, confirm the active tab and page state, then capture again.

4. Automate website screenshots with ScreenshotNeo

For repeatable captures from a script or service, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
const bytes = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', bytes));

Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the target URL. Keep the key out of public client-side code. ScreenshotNeo supports options for full-page capture, element selection, viewport and device presets, image format, PDF output, wait conditions, custom CSS or JavaScript, and more. It also supports async jobs, bulk requests, signed links, and an MCP server for AI agents. Check the documentation for supported parameter names and values.

Or skip the browser setup

Make one request to capture a page. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

5. Performance, reliability, and cost

For an occasional screenshot of a page already open on your PC, DevTools and Snipping Tool require no separate screenshot service. Full-page captures can be slower and larger than viewport captures because they include more content. Pages with lazy loading, animations, or changing data can produce incomplete or inconsistent results; prepare the page and wait for it to settle.

For automated work, ScreenshotNeo offers caching with a TTL you choose, async jobs with signed webhooks, and bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call. Its stated billing policy charges only for clean shots: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Plans are Free: 1,000 shots/month; Starter: $5 for 3,000; Growth: $15 for 15,000; Pro: $39 for 60,000; Scale: $99 for 250,000; Business: $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is on every plan. Refer to the product site and documentation for current details.
