How to Take a Screenshot on a Chromebook with a Keyboard Shortcut

Press Ctrl + Show windows for a full Chromebook screenshot, or use the capture menu for a region or window.

Full-screen screenshot: press Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key is the top-row key with the overview or window icon.

For a selected area, press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows, then click and drag around the region you want. ChromeOS copies the capture to your clipboard and saves it in Downloads by default. Google’s Chromebook screenshot guide documents these capture modes and storage behavior.

1. Chromebook screenshot shortcuts at a glance

What you want Keys or action Result
Entire screen Ctrl + Show windows Captures the full display immediately.
Part of the screen Shift + Ctrl + Show windows Opens selection mode; drag over the area to capture.
Specific window Open Screen capture, choose the window option Captures one application window.
External keyboard without Show windows Ctrl + Shift + F5 Google’s documented fallback for an external keyboard.
Chromebook tablet Power + Volume down Captures the tablet screen without a keyboard.

These shortcuts are described for a standard English QWERTY Chromebook keyboard. Key labels and layouts can differ by model. On the built-in keyboard, identify Show windows by its overview or rectangle icon rather than by its position alone. Google’s keyboard shortcut reference lists the standard combinations.

2. Take a full-screen screenshot

  1. Show the content you want to capture.
  2. Hold Ctrl.
  3. Press the Show windows key once.
  4. Release both keys. ChromeOS saves the image and copies it to the clipboard.

Use this mode for an entire webpage, desktop, or multi-window layout. If a menu closes when you press the shortcut, reopen it and try again; some transient menus disappear during capture.

3. Capture part of the screen

  1. Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows.
  2. When the capture controls appear, choose the partial-region option if it is not already selected.
  3. Click at one corner of the area.
  4. Drag to the opposite corner and release.

The selection rectangle determines the captured pixels. Start slightly outside the target and adjust the handles if the interface provides them. Partial capture is useful for one paragraph, an error message, or a small diagram because it avoids cropping a full-screen image later.

4. Capture one application window

Open the Screen capture interface from the shelf or quick settings, then choose the window mode and select the application window. The interface also exposes full-screen and partial-screen modes. This is preferable when you want the whole browser window but not the shelf, another monitor, or neighboring applications.

If your Chromebook has a dedicated Screenshot key, press it to open the same capture controls. If you cannot find that key, Google directs users to Settings → Screen capture and the Shift + Ctrl + Show windows shortcut.

5. Find, paste, and move the screenshot

  • Clipboard: screenshots are automatically copied to the clipboard. Paste with Ctrl + V into an editor, email, chat, or document.
  • Default file location: open the Files app and choose Downloads.
  • Change the destination: open Screen capture settings and select a different save folder when ChromeOS offers the location control.
  • Verify the format: open the saved file in Files to check its dimensions and image type before uploading it.

6. External keyboards, Search keys, and tablets

External keyboard without a Show windows key

Use Ctrl + Shift + F5. This is the fallback Google lists for an external keyboard that lacks the Chromebook overview key.

Different physical key labels

Some external keyboards use Windows or Command labels where a Chromebook uses Search. Google’s shortcut documentation explains those Search-key substitutions, but they do not replace the Show windows key in every screenshot combination. If the shortcut fails, use the Screen capture menu or the documented F5 fallback.

Tablet-form Chromebook

With no keyboard attached, press Power + Volume down at the same time. This hardware shortcut is separate from the keyboard commands above.

7. Troubleshooting Chromebook screenshots

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Nothing happens You pressed the wrong top-row key or the external keyboard has no Show windows key. Look for the overview/window icon, open Screen capture from quick settings, or use Ctrl + Shift + F5 on an external keyboard.
The wrong area is captured The selection started or ended in the wrong place. Repeat the partial shortcut and drag from corner to corner more slowly.
You cannot find the file The default Downloads folder was overlooked or the save location was changed. Open Files and check Downloads, then review Screen capture settings for the current destination.
Paste does not work The application does not accept image clipboard data or the clipboard was replaced. Open the saved file from Downloads and attach or insert it directly.
A window capture is unavailable The capture interface is in full-screen or region mode. Open Screen capture and explicitly select the window icon before choosing an application.
A menu or tooltip is missing The interface closed when the capture started. Use a window or partial capture, or capture the screen before opening the transient menu.

8. Performance, reliability, and privacy notes

Keyboard capture is local to ChromeOS, so it does not depend on an internet connection or a screenshot website. For repeatable documentation, capture the same viewport and window state each time, and check the saved file before sharing it. A full-screen image includes everything visible on that display, including notifications and account details; use partial or window capture when you need to limit what is exposed.

9. Or skip the browser setup

If you need screenshots of webpages from a script, build pipeline, or AI workflow instead of your Chromebook display, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. 10. FAQ

Can I screenshot only one browser tab?

Use window capture for the browser window, then select the tab or region you need. ChromeOS does not require a separate extension for the standard capture modes.

Where is the Show windows key?

On a standard Chromebook keyboard it is on the top row and has an overview or window icon. External keyboards may omit it.

Do screenshots go to Google Drive automatically?

No. They are saved locally in Downloads by default. Change the Screen capture destination if your device provides another folder.

Can I take a screenshot without a keyboard?

Yes. On a Chromebook tablet, press Power + Volume down.
