How to Clear Safari History

Clear Safari history on iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Choose a timeframe, understand what gets deleted, and fix a greyed-out clear button.

To clear Safari history, use Settings > Apps > Safari > Clear History and Website Data on iPhone or iPad, or choose History > Clear History in Safari on Mac. Choose the time period you want to remove. On iPhone and iPad, you may also be able to choose a Safari profile or All Profiles.

Before confirming, note that the iPhone and iPad control clears history and website data together. On Mac, choose a timeframe from the menu. If your Mac uses iCloud to sync Safari, clearing history on the Mac also removes it from your other devices. These steps clear Safari’s records; they do not erase browsing history independently kept by websites or other apps.

Clear history on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps, then Safari. On some older iOS or iPadOS versions, Safari may appear directly in Settings.
  3. Tap Clear History and Website Data.
  4. If prompted, choose the timeframe and the Safari profile to clear. Select All Profiles only if you mean to clear every profile.
  5. Tap Clear History to confirm.

Apple also documents an in-Safari method on iPhone: open Bookmarks and History, tap More, then Clear. Choose a timeframe and, if profiles are configured, the profile or All Profiles. Labels can vary by OS version.

Clear history on Mac

  1. Open Safari.
  2. In the menu bar, choose History > Clear History.
  3. Choose how far back to clear from the pop-up menu.
  4. Click Clear History.

If Safari is set up with iCloud on your Mac and other Apple devices, clearing history on the Mac removes that history across those devices too. Consider this before choosing a broad timeframe.

Choose what to clear

Your goal Use this option What to keep in mind
Remove a recent portion of your history Choose a timeframe in the clear-history interface Available timeframes depend on the device and OS version.
Clear history for one Safari profile Select that profile when the interface offers profile selection Choose All Profiles only when you intend to clear all of them.
Clear history and website data on iPhone or iPad Clear History and Website Data This removes website data used for tracking and for saving login information. AutoFill information is not changed.
Remove cookies and cache but keep browsing history Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > Website Data, then remove website data Apple also documents a separate Remove All Website Data control for this purpose. Menu labels may vary; confirm the selected action before using it.

Apple’s broader description of Safari history clearing includes visited pages and recent searches, the back and forward list, frequently visited sites, page icons, saved page snapshots, the download list, Quick Website Search sites, and sites that requested location or notification permissions. Clearing the download list does not delete the downloaded files themselves. On iPhone, AutoFill information remains unchanged.

What clearing Safari history does not remove

Clearing Safari history is not a way to erase every record of browsing. It does not clear histories independently kept by websites you visited or by other apps. It also does not delete files you downloaded; remove those separately if needed. Apple notes that Private Browsing can prevent pages and searches from being saved in Safari history in the usual way, but it is a setting for future browsing, not a way to erase existing history or downloads.

Fix a greyed-out clear button

If Clear History and Website Data is unavailable on iPhone or iPad, Apple identifies two likely explanations:

  • There is no history or website data to clear. If the device has nothing in that category, the control may be disabled.
  • Screen Time web content restrictions are active. Check Settings > Screen Time and review the content restrictions if the button is unexpectedly unavailable.

Troubleshooting and edge cases

Problem Likely cause What to do
The clear control is missing or greyed out No Safari data is available to clear, or Screen Time restrictions apply. Check whether there is data to clear, then review Screen Time web content restrictions.
A page still remembers me after clearing The selected action may not remove every website-data item, or the site may keep its own account records. Use the website-data removal option if you want to remove cookies and cache while keeping history. A website’s independent records are outside Safari’s clearing controls.
History disappears on my other Apple devices Safari history is syncing through iCloud. Expect a Mac clear-history action to apply across devices using Safari with iCloud. Choose the timeframe carefully.
My downloaded file is still present Clearing history removes the download list entry, not the downloaded file. Delete the file from the device’s Downloads location separately.
I cannot find the menu Apple documents Navigation and labels can differ by OS version or device. On current iPhone and iPad documentation, start at Settings > Apps > Safari. On Mac, use Safari’s History menu.
Only some profile history was cleared The clear action was applied to a selected Safari profile. Repeat the action and select the intended profile, or All Profiles if that is your goal.

Or skip the browser setup

If your actual goal is to capture a webpage for documentation or debugging, you can request a screenshot directly through ScreenshotNeo’s API. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server from ScreenshotNeo. This does not clear Safari history; it captures a page without requiring you to configure a browser automation setup.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
const image = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', image));
  • Cookie banners are accepted like a visitor, and known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Each step can be turned off.
  • Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers report the page verdict and billing status.
  • An MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs.
  • The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
