How to Convert a Chrome HTML Document to PDF for Free

Save any HTML page open in Chrome as a PDF for free using built-in print tools on desktop or Android, plus reliable options for automated captures.

Fast answer: Open the HTML document in Chrome, press Ctrl+P on Windows/Linux or Command+P on macOS, choose Save as PDF, check the preview, and save the file. On Android, use More > Share > Print > Save as PDF.

Chrome performs this conversion with its built-in print preview, so you do not need a physical printer or paid converter. Google documents the desktop workflow and shortcuts in Print from Chrome and the Android route in its mobile instructions.

1. Convert an HTML document on desktop Chrome

  1. Open the local HTML file or web page in Chrome.
  2. Open print preview with File > Print, Ctrl+P on Windows/Linux, or Command+P on Mac.
  3. In Destination, select Save as PDF.
  4. Review the preview. Change any print controls available in your Chrome version, such as paper size, orientation, margins, scale, headers and footers, or background graphics.
  5. Click Save or Print, choose a folder, and open the resulting PDF to verify it.

Print controls vary by operating system, Chrome version, page CSS, and administrator policy. Use the controls shown in your preview rather than assuming every option is present.

Save a local HTML file

For a file on your computer, choose File > Open File (or drag the file into a Chrome window), then follow the same print steps. Relative images, stylesheets, fonts, and scripts must be available from the same folder or an accessible URL for them to appear.

Save a web page

Wait for the page to finish loading before opening print preview. Expand important accordions, load content that appears only after scrolling, and dismiss overlays that would otherwise be printed. If the page is an application that changes after load, capture it only after the final state is visible.

2. Convert an HTML document on Android

  1. Open the page in Chrome for Android.
  2. Tap More (the three-dot menu), then Share, then Print.
  3. Open the printer or destination selector and choose Save as PDF.
  4. Select a location on the device and tap Print.

Android uses a different menu path from desktop Chrome; desktop keyboard shortcuts do not apply.

3. Print settings that affect the PDF

Setting What it changes When to adjust it
Paper size Page dimensions and wrapping Match the intended paper or archival format.
Orientation Portrait or landscape layout Use landscape for wide tables or diagrams.
Margins Whitespace around printed content Reduce margins when content is clipped, if the option is available.
Scale How much content fits on each page Lower it when headings or columns spill onto another page.
Headers and footers Printed URL, title, date, and page numbers Disable them for a clean document, or enable them for source context.
Background graphics Colors and background images Enable it when the design depends on colored panels or backgrounds.

Always inspect page breaks, clipped text, missing images, and blank pages in the preview and in the saved PDF. Print CSS (@media print and @page) can intentionally hide navigation or change layout.

4. Optional: save the PDF to Google Drive

Chrome’s local Save as PDF destination is sufficient. On desktop, Google also documents saving to Google Drive when the Save to Google Drive extension is installed. Another option is to save locally and upload the PDF to Drive afterward. Availability depends on the browser profile and installed extensions.

5. Or skip the browser setup

For repeated or automated captures, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its PDF capture supports paper size, margins, landscape mode, and page ranges; the same service can also wait for selectors or network idle, run custom JavaScript, set cookies and headers, and capture full pages with lazy-loaded images.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for PDF options. The request shape below is the supplied one-call example (replace the URL with your page):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and each response reports its result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

6. Common problems and fixes

“Save as PDF” is missing

A managed work or school browser can restrict printing destinations. Chrome administrators can configure printing policies and available destinations, as described in Chrome Enterprise policy documentation. Try an unmanaged profile or ask the administrator to allow printing.

The preview is blank

Wait for the page to finish loading, reload it, and check whether a script or login is required. For a local file, confirm that referenced assets are present and readable. For a dynamic app, wait until the content appears before opening print preview.

Images or background colors are missing

Enable background graphics if that control is available. Check that images have loaded and that the page does not use lazy loading that activates only after scrolling. A print stylesheet may also hide backgrounds or images intentionally.

Content is cut off or split badly

Try landscape orientation, a different paper size, smaller scale, or narrower margins. Remove wide sidebars and inspect tables at several scales. CSS rules such as break-inside, page-break-before, and page-break-after can change pagination.

Fonts look different

Web fonts may not have finished loading or may be blocked by the network. Wait for the final layout, then print again. A local HTML file should reference fonts with paths that Chrome can access.

The PDF has unexpected headers, URLs, or dates

Toggle headers and footers in print preview when that option is available. If the controls are locked, a browser policy may be enforcing them.

7. Reliability, privacy, and cost notes

  • Cost: Chrome’s built-in Save as PDF is free and does not require a converter subscription.
  • Reliability: A manual print is best for a one-off document. Preview the actual output because responsive layouts, print CSS, and dynamic content can change pagination.
  • Privacy: The built-in workflow keeps the conversion in your browser. Avoid uploading sensitive HTML to an external service unless your policy permits it.
  • Automation: For scheduled or bulk captures, an API can provide consistent waits, cookies, headers, page ranges, and output handling. ScreenshotNeo bills only clean shots and exposes verdict and billing headers for each response.
  • Storage: Confirm the PDF opens after saving and record its filename and location if another process will consume it.

8. FAQ

Can Chrome convert an HTML file without printing on paper?

Yes. Select Save as PDF as the destination; no physical printer is required.

Does Chrome need an internet connection?

A local HTML file can be printed offline if its assets are local. A web page needs network access for content and resources that are not cached.

Can I make a searchable PDF?

Text rendered from an HTML page is normally selectable in the saved PDF. Chrome’s PDF viewer also has a separate on-device OCR path for some scanned PDFs; OCR is not required for HTML-to-PDF conversion. See Chrome’s PDF documentation.

Why does Android show different options?

Android uses the system print flow reached through More > Share > Print. Available destinations and settings depend on the device and installed print services.

Can I save a page directly to Google Drive?

Desktop Chrome can offer Google Drive as a destination when the Save to Google Drive extension is installed. Otherwise, save the PDF locally and upload it.
