Short answer: open the saved webpage, choose Print, select Save as PDF (Chrome) or Save to PDF (Firefox), review the preview, then save. On iPhone Safari, use the page menu or Share button, choose Markup, tap Done, and save the PDF to Files.

Choose the right kind of saved copy

A PDF is a print-oriented document for reading, sharing, archiving, or submitting. It may reflow or omit interactive web elements. If you need the original web format, use a Web Archive or saved HTML instead; those are different outputs. Safari on Mac can save a Web Archive containing graphics and links, or Page Source containing only HTML. Some sites restrict saving.

Save a webpage as PDF on desktop

Chrome on Windows, Linux, or macOS

  1. Open the webpage in Chrome and wait until the content you need has loaded.
  2. Choose File > Print, or press Ctrl+P on Windows/Linux or Command+P on Mac.
  3. In the destination list, choose Save as PDF.
  4. Set the page range, paper size, orientation, scale, margins, and whether backgrounds are included.
  5. Inspect every page in the preview. Click Save, choose a folder and filename, then confirm.

Chrome’s documented workflow is described in Print from Chrome.

Firefox on Windows, Linux, or macOS

  1. Open the page and select the Firefox menu button, then Print.
  2. Open Destination and choose Save to PDF.
  3. Adjust pages, orientation, color mode, paper size, scale, pages per sheet, margins, headers and footers, and print backgrounds as needed.
  4. Review the preview and click Print to choose the PDF filename and location.

See Mozilla’s current instructions in How to print web pages in Firefox.

Microsoft Edge

  1. Open the webpage in Edge.
  2. Open the menu and select Print, or right-click the page and choose Print when available.
  3. Choose the PDF destination exposed by your operating system’s print dialog.
  4. Review the preview and settings, then save the file.

Destination names and available settings can vary by operating system and installed printers. Edge’s print support documentation covers the general controls.

Save a webpage as PDF on a phone

iPhone or iPad Safari

  1. Open the page in Safari.
  2. Open the page menu or tap Share. The control shown depends on your Safari tab layout.
  3. Tap Markup, then tap Done.
  4. Choose Save File To, select a folder in Files, name the PDF, and tap Save.

Apple documents this route in its Safari webpage PDF instructions.

Android Firefox

Firefox for Android includes a command to save a webpage as a PDF for later access from Downloads. Open the page menu, choose the print or save option shown by your installed version, select PDF, and confirm the destination. Mozilla’s Android support page has the current control sequence; labels can change between releases.

Setting Use it when Typical effect
Page range You need selected sections Excludes unwanted pages and reduces file size
Orientation The page has wide tables or diagrams Landscape gives wide content more room
Scale Text is clipped or pages contain excessive whitespace Changes how much content fits on each page
Margins Headers, footers, or edge content collide Adds or removes printable space
Background graphics Colored panels or diagrams are meaningful Preserves background colors and images when supported
Headers and footers You need or want URL, title, or date metadata Adds browser-generated print metadata
Color Color carries meaning or you need a smaller file Color improves fidelity; black and white can reduce size

Always treat the preview and the saved PDF as the source of truth. Websites can provide print stylesheets that hide, restyle, or reflow content compared with the screen.

When a saved webpage is incomplete

  • Wait for dynamic content: let images, charts, comments, and accordions finish loading before opening Print.
  • Expand required sections: collapsed menus or accordions may not appear in print.
  • Check the preview: if content is absent there, changing the PDF filename will not restore it.
  • Try another orientation or scale: wide tables commonly clip in portrait mode.
  • Use a Web Archive or HTML when interaction matters: a PDF cannot preserve every script, form, or live link behavior.

Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause Fix
No PDF destination appears The system print dialog is being used or a platform lacks a built-in PDF driver Look for a destination named Save as PDF/Save to PDF, or install and select an available PDF printer supplied by the operating system
Images or charts are missing Lazy loading or scripts had not finished Scroll through the page, wait, reload, and reopen Print; verify the preview
Text is cut off Scale, margins, or orientation do not fit the layout Use landscape, reduce scale, adjust margins, or print selected pages
Colors are absent Background graphics are disabled or color printing is off Enable background graphics and color in print settings when available
Only the first screen is saved The page uses an app shell or content loads after interaction Wait for loading, expand sections, and check whether the site offers a print view
Fonts look different The site’s print stylesheet or local font loading changes the layout Wait for fonts to load and compare the print preview; accept that print CSS may intentionally restyle the page
Private content is missing Your session expired or the site blocks printing Sign in again, confirm access, and follow the site’s permitted export method

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo converts a URL to a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF through one request. It can accept cookie banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

See the complete option list and request details in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo also supports PDF paper size, margins, landscape mode, page ranges, full-page capture with lazy images loaded, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits for selectors or network idle, cookies and headers, caching with a chosen TTL, signed links, asynchronous jobs, webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, and an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

  • Local browser: free and immediate for occasional documents, but output depends on the page’s print CSS, loading state, and your device.
  • ScreenshotNeo: useful for repeatable or automated captures because options such as waits, custom headers, cookies, blocking rules, caching, async jobs, and webhooks are request-configurable.
  • Billing: only clean shots are billed; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Check X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed to classify each response.
  • File size: selecting only needed pages, lowering image scale, and disabling unnecessary backgrounds can reduce PDF size.
  • Security: avoid placing API keys in client-side HTML. Keep keys on a server or protected automation environment, and send only URLs and credentials you are authorized to access.

FAQ

Can I convert a webpage without a physical printer?

Yes. Chrome and Firefox provide PDF destinations directly in their print workflows.

Will a PDF preserve the exact screen appearance?

No. Print stylesheets and print settings can reflow, hide, or restyle content. Use the preview to verify the actual result.

Should I save HTML instead?

Use HTML or a Web Archive when preserving interactive behavior or the original web structure matters more than a printable document.

How do I automate many pages?

Use an API such as ScreenshotNeo with waits, cookies, headers, caching, asynchronous jobs, webhooks, or bulk capture instead of manually opening each page.

Does ScreenshotNeo create PDFs as well as images?

Yes. Its PDF options include paper size, margins, landscape mode, and page ranges.
