How to Create a Thumbnail Image From a Video or Image

Create a thumbnail from a still image or a video frame, prepare it for YouTube, and upload it with the right dimensions and file size.

You can create a thumbnail from either an existing image or a deliberately chosen frame from a video. Choose a sharp, representative source, crop and compose it for the destination, then export in a supported format. For a standard YouTube video, upload the finished image from that video’s Thumbnail setting in YouTube Studio and save. Custom thumbnail uploads require a verified account.

1. Choose the source image

Start with either a separate still image or a frame from the video. Compare the options by sharpness, resolution, relevance, composition after cropping, and editing effort.

Source Good fit when Check before using
Existing photograph or illustration You already have a clear image that accurately represents the video. It is sharp enough at the intended output size and its crop leaves the subject visible.
Video frame A moment in the video is the most accurate or recognizable representation. The subject is in focus, the frame is not a transition or motion blur, and the composition survives cropping.

Do not assume the opening frame is the best choice. Scrub to a moment that makes the subject and context easy to recognize. If you are building an application, Apple’s AVFoundation guide to generating stills from a video asset describes requesting an image at a specific time in the asset’s timeline. Consumer editors have their own controls, so consult the editor’s documentation for exact steps.

2. Extract a frame when your source is a video

In a video editor, move the playhead to the frame you want and use its frame export, snapshot, or still-image feature. The exact label varies by editor. Export the original frame at its available resolution before resizing or cropping, so you retain room to compose.

For a developer workflow, use a video framework that can generate a still at a selected timestamp. Apple documents this approach for AVFoundation; other frameworks have their own APIs and constraints. Inspect the resulting image: a requested timestamp can fall between useful moments, during a transition, or on a blurred frame. Try a nearby time if the result is poor.

3. Crop and compose the thumbnail

Open the still or extracted frame in an image editor. Set the canvas to the destination aspect ratio, position the subject where it remains clear, and crop away irrelevant edges. Keep important faces, objects, and visual context inside the crop. Check the result at small display size, since a thumbnail is often viewed much smaller than the original.

A basic image editor is enough for a crop and export. A browser-based editor such as Canva’s thumbnail editor is another option if you want templates or additional editing controls; its product page describes JPEG and PNG downloads. Choose a tool based on the controls and export formats you need.

Keep the thumbnail representative of the video and follow the destination’s content rules. YouTube says custom thumbnails must follow its Community Guidelines; prohibited content can lead to rejection and other account consequences.

4. Export for YouTube

YouTube’s current recommendations for custom thumbnails are 3840 × 2160 pixels for standard videos and 2160 × 3840 pixels for Shorts. It recommends a 16:9 aspect ratio for standard videos and 9:16 for Shorts. The minimum width for a video thumbnail is 640 pixels; for Shorts, the minimum height is 640 pixels. These are YouTube recommendations and requirements, not universal dimensions for every platform.

Destination Recommended dimensions Recommended ratio Minimum dimension stated by YouTube
Standard video 3840 × 2160 px 16:9 640 px wide
Shorts 2160 × 3840 px 9:16 640 px high

Export as JPG or PNG. YouTube’s upload limit depends on the upload route: mobile video thumbnail uploads are limited to 2 MB, while desktop video, Shorts, and podcast thumbnail uploads are listed at 50 MB. The YouTube Data API separately documents a 50 MB maximum and accepts JPEG and PNG. If your file is too large, export a JPG at a suitable quality setting or resize it while preserving the recommended aspect ratio. See YouTube’s current custom thumbnail requirements and the YouTube Data API thumbnails.set reference for the applicable route.

5. Upload the custom thumbnail

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Content.
  2. Select the video you want to update.
  3. In the video’s Thumbnail section, choose Upload file.
  4. Select the JPG or PNG image you exported.
  5. Save the video changes.

YouTube also offers suggested thumbnails in the same section. Allow time for a changed thumbnail to appear across the service. Custom video and Shorts thumbnail uploads require a verified account. YouTube currently says Shorts thumbnail uploads are available in YouTube Studio on a computer.

For vertical videos, YouTube may replace a 16:9 custom thumbnail with an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and Subscriptions pages. YouTube says the custom thumbnail remains visible in other contexts, including watch feed and history, and on non-mobile platforms. Check the current YouTube Help guidance if the thumbnail appears differently in a particular surface.

If your goal is to capture a web page as an image, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It captures web pages; it does not extract a frame from a video or design a YouTube thumbnail. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
await Bun.write('shot.webp', res);

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause What to do
You cannot upload a custom thumbnail The account may not be verified, or the selected upload route may not support the action. Verify the account and use the Thumbnail section in YouTube Studio. For Shorts, use Studio on a computer as YouTube currently directs.
The image is rejected as too large The file exceeds the limit for the device or API route. Check the limit for the route: mobile video uploads have a 2 MB limit; desktop video, Shorts, and podcast uploads are listed at 50 MB. For API uploads, check the 50 MB maximum. Reduce file size or dimensions without distorting the crop.
The upload does not accept the image The file may use an unsupported format or have an issue unrelated to its extension. Export a valid JPG or PNG and try again. The YouTube Data API documents JPEG and PNG for its thumbnail upload endpoint.
The thumbnail looks cropped differently on Shorts surfaces YouTube can show an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail for vertical videos on some surfaces. Check how the image appears on the relevant surface and keep the central subject within a crop-safe area.
The new thumbnail is not visible yet The update may take time to appear. Confirm that you saved the video, then allow time for the change to propagate and check again.
The extracted frame is blurry or unrepresentative The selected timestamp may land on motion blur, a transition, or an unsuitable moment. Choose a nearby timestamp with a sharp, clear subject, then export and crop again.
A thumbnail is rejected for policy reasons The image may violate YouTube’s Community Guidelines for custom thumbnails. Review the current thumbnail policy and replace the image with compliant content.

Performance, reliability, and cost

For a single thumbnail, a still image and an editor are usually enough; no special hardware or paid product is inherently required. For repeated frame extraction in an application, choose the timestamp deliberately and check the generated image before publishing. Keep an original export so you can revise the crop without extracting the frame again.

File size affects whether an upload succeeds, and limits differ by device and API route. Check the current platform requirements before an automated publishing workflow depends on them. This workflow does not guarantee more views or clicks: the sources here establish image and upload guidance, not a performance result.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a frame from someone else’s video?

This guide covers the image creation workflow, not rights to reuse source material. Make sure you have the rights and permissions needed for the image and its intended use.

Can I use the same thumbnail dimensions on every platform?

No. The dimensions above are YouTube’s recommendations. Check the destination platform’s current requirements and compose the image for its aspect ratio.

Does ScreenshotNeo turn a video frame into a thumbnail?

No. ScreenshotNeo captures web pages. Use a video editor or a video framework to extract a frame, then crop and export it for the target platform.
