How to Download Pictures from Google

Download one picture from Google Photos on a computer, Android, or iPhone, or export your full library with Google Takeout. Learn what to do when Download is missing.

To download a picture you own in Google Photos, open it, choose More, then Download. On a computer, go to photos.google.com. On Android or iPhone/iPad, use the Google Photos app. If you need your entire library, use Google Takeout instead.

“Pictures from Google” can also mean images shown in Google Search Images. The steps below are for photos and videos in your Google Photos library. The Google instructions cited here do not document the Google Search Images download workflow, and saving an image does not grant permission to reuse it.

Download one photo or video from Google Photos

On a computer

  1. Go to photos.google.com and sign in to the Google Account that contains the item.
  2. Select the photo or video.
  3. Choose More, then Download.

Google describes this action as copying the selected photo or video to your device. Google Photos Help: Download photos or videos to your device

On Android

  1. Open the Google Photos app and select the photo or video.
  2. Tap More, then Download.

If the item is already stored on that Android device, Google says the Download option will not appear. Google Photos Help: Android instructions

On iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Google Photos and select the photo or video.
  2. Tap More, then Download.

If the item is already in your camera roll, Google says you cannot download it from Google Photos again through this action. Google Photos Help: iPhone and iPad instructions

Download your whole Google Photos library

For a large collection, use Google Takeout rather than downloading each item individually. Google’s export flow lets you select Google Photos data, customize the export, choose a delivery method and archive format, and create the export. Delivery options include an email download link and certain cloud storage services; the options presented can depend on what is available for your account.

  1. Sign in to Google Takeout and select Google Photos data for export.
  2. Continue to customize the export, including the delivery method and archive format.
  3. Create the export and wait for Google to prepare it.
  4. Download the archive using the delivery instructions Google provides.

Google says export creation can take from a few minutes to a few days, depending on the amount of account information. The archive may not reflect changes made after you request it and before it is created. Google recommends downloading and viewing Takeout exports on a desktop computer. Choose a destination with enough free space for the archive. Google Photos Help: How to download your Google data

Google Photos download or Takeout?

Need Use What to expect
One selected photo or video More > Download in Google Photos Creates a local copy. On mobile, Download can be absent if the item is already on the device.
A large collection or the whole library Google Takeout Creates an export archive; preparation can take minutes to days, and it needs enough storage space.

A search result image is not necessarily part of your Google Photos library. The official Google Photos instructions linked above cover downloading items from Photos, not saving an image displayed in Google Search Images, so do not treat those steps as verified instructions for Search.

Before using a search-result image, check the original page and the image owner’s terms or get permission through an appropriate route. Downloading a copy does not establish that you have the right to publish, modify, or use it commercially.

Or skip the browser setup

If your actual task is capturing a webpage as an image, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. See the API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
  • Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off.
  • Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Responses include page-verdict and billing headers.
  • An MCP server lets AI agents use the take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools.
  • The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Troubleshooting

Download is missing on Android

Google says the option does not appear if that photo or video is already on the device. Check the device’s local photo library before trying again. Google’s Android instructions

Download is unavailable on iPhone or iPad

If the item is already in the camera roll, Google says it cannot be downloaded again through the Google Photos action. Check the camera roll for the local copy. Google’s iOS instructions

The export is taking a long time

Takeout preparation time varies with the amount of account information and can range from minutes to days. Wait for Google’s export delivery, and remember the archive might not include changes made after the request and before archive creation. Google Takeout guidance

The Takeout archive is too large or fails

Google’s instructions suggest trying a smaller export or selecting fewer product files. Ensure the chosen destination has enough room for the archive, then create a narrower export if needed. Google Takeout guidance

I need an image from Google Search, not Photos

The Photos download steps do not apply to that task. Open the source page and check its terms and available download options; do not assume the search result gives reuse rights.

Cost, storage, and reliability notes

  • Downloading one item uses the Google Photos per-item action; a full-library export is a separate Takeout archive process.
  • For Takeout, allow for preparation time and enough local or cloud storage. Google recommends a desktop computer for downloading and viewing exports.
  • An export can be a snapshot that misses changes made after the request but before archive creation. If recent changes matter, account for that timing when planning the export.
  • For important media, verify that downloaded files open and that the archive contains the expected material before relying on it as your only copy.

FAQ

Can I download a Google Photos video the same way as a picture?

Yes. Google’s per-item instructions apply to photos and videos.

Can I download all my pictures at once?

Use Google Takeout to export Google Photos data instead of repeating the single-item download.

Does downloading a picture mean I can post it elsewhere?

No. A local copy and permission to reuse an image are separate matters. Check the owner’s terms or obtain permission.

Can ScreenshotNeo download my Google Photos library?

No. ScreenshotNeo captures webpages as image or PDF output; it is not a Google Photos library export tool.
