How to Download a Web Page as HTML in Firefox
Save a Firefox page as one HTML file or as a complete offline copy. Learn what each format includes, where to find it, and how to troubleshoot saves.
On desktop Firefox, open the page, choose Save Page As (also labeled Save Page in Mozilla help), select Web page, HTML only in the save dialog, choose a filename and location, then click Save. This creates one HTML file and leaves out pictures. For a copy that includes pictures and supporting resources, choose Web page, complete; Firefox saves those resources in a separate folder. Mozilla’s save-page guide describes these formats and their limits.
1. Save a page as HTML in desktop Firefox
- Open the page you want to save in Firefox.
- Open the Firefox menu and select Save Page As or Save Page. Depending on your Firefox version and platform, the wording or menu placement may differ.
- In the save dialog, choose the destination folder and enter a filename.
- Choose Web page, HTML only from the file-type or format menu.
- Click Save.
The result is a single HTML document. It does not include the page’s pictures. Saving the markup also does not guarantee that scripts, interactive controls, sign-ins, or content loaded dynamically from a server will work offline as they did online.
2. Choose the right save format
| Firefox format | What it saves | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Web page, HTML only | One HTML file without pictures. | You need a single document containing the page’s HTML. |
| Web page, complete | The page plus pictures and supporting resources in a separate directory. The original HTML link structure may not be preserved. | You want a more complete offline copy and can keep the HTML file together with its resource folder. |
| Text files | A text version without the original HTML structure. | You need readable text rather than HTML markup. |
| All files | Equivalent to HTML-only, while letting you choose an extension such as .htm or .shtml. |
You need a particular filename extension. |
If you choose Web page, complete, keep the saved HTML and its accompanying folder together. Moving or renaming just one can break references to supporting files. The complete option is not a promise that the saved copy will reproduce every online behavior.
3. Find the saved file and check it
Firefox saves the file in the destination you selected in the dialog. If you do not remember the location, open your system’s file manager and check likely download or document folders, or repeat the save workflow and look at the dialog’s current destination before saving again.
- For HTML only, look for the single file with the name and extension shown in the dialog.
- For Complete, look for both the HTML file and its related resource folder.
- To inspect the result, open the saved file from your file manager. It may open in Firefox or another app associated with HTML files.
- If images are missing, confirm that you selected Web page, complete and that the resource folder is beside the HTML file.
A saved page is a local copy of what Firefox could save at that time. It may omit content that only appears after additional interaction or is fetched later from a website. A local copy is not the same as a full archive of the website.
4. Firefox on Android
These HTML instructions apply to desktop Firefox. Mozilla’s documented Firefox for Android page actions include Save as PDF; the reviewed Android guidance does not document a built-in HTML-save workflow like desktop’s Save Page As dialog. See Mozilla’s Firefox for Android menu guide for the documented mobile actions. If you specifically need an HTML file, use desktop Firefox and choose the format in its save dialog.
5. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The saved file contains no pictures. | Web page, HTML only creates one HTML file without pictures. | Save again and choose Web page, complete. Keep the resulting resource folder with the HTML file. |
| The page looks different or some controls do not work offline. | The saved copy may not include content or behavior that depends on scripts, a login, network requests, or later page interactions. | Reconnect and use the original site for interactive content. Treat Save Page as a local copy, not a guarantee of a functional offline clone. |
| The complete copy has broken images or other resources. | The separate resource folder may have been moved, renamed, or separated from the HTML file. | Restore the HTML file and its accompanying folder to the same saved arrangement, then open the HTML file again. |
| The save dialog does not show the expected format. | The dialog’s format selector or available labels can vary by platform or Firefox version. | Look for the file-type selector and choose the HTML-only or complete-page option. Mozilla documents both formats for desktop Firefox. |
| You saved a text file but need markup. | Text files saves text without preserving HTML structure. | Repeat the save and select Web page, HTML only, or use All files if you need to specify an extension. |
| You cannot find the file. | The destination chosen in the save dialog may not be the folder you expected. | Check the selected destination in the dialog and search your file manager for the filename you entered. |
6. Practical notes on completeness and reliability
For a single HTML document, HTML-only is the direct choice. For a page with its pictures and supporting resources, complete is closer to an offline copy, but it creates a separate resource directory and may not preserve the original link structure. Neither format guarantees that dynamic or authenticated page features will work after saving.
Firefox’s built-in save function is the simplest route when you need a copy of one page on your computer. The source guidance does not provide timing, file-size, or cost figures, so there is no general benchmark to apply. The amount saved depends on the page and the selected format. If the purpose is to capture how a page looks, an image or PDF is a different output from HTML and will not preserve the page as editable markup.
7. Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a screenshot of a page rather than an HTML download, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. It does not download a page as HTML.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation. Replace the example URL with the page you want to capture and put your API key in place of YOUR_API_KEY.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Every feature is on every plan.

8. FAQ
Does HTML-only save the pictures?
No. Choose Web page, complete if you want Firefox to save pictures and supporting resources in a separate folder.
Can I save a page as an .htm file?
Mozilla describes All files as equivalent to HTML-only while allowing a chosen extension, including .htm.
Can I use the desktop steps in Firefox for Android?
The desktop Save Page As steps are not documented as an Android HTML-save workflow in the cited Mozilla guidance. Android’s documented save action includes saving as PDF.
Will the saved HTML work without an internet connection?
The file can be opened locally, but scripts, interactive features, sign-ins, and content loaded dynamically may not work offline. The complete option can save pictures and supporting files, but does not guarantee a fully working copy of the online site.
