Save a Chrome webpage for offline reading, download files to Files or Drive, find your downloads, and avoid common iPhone mistakes.

To save a webpage for offline reading in Chrome on iPhone, open the page, tap More (⋯), then tap Add to Reading List. Later, open Chrome, tap More, choose Reading List, and select the saved page.

If you need a standalone file such as a PDF, image, or document, use Chrome’s download flow instead: open the file, tap it, choose Save, and select Files or Google Drive.

Choose the right way to download a webpage

What you need Chrome feature Where it goes
Read the webpage later without internet Add to Reading List Chrome Reading List
Keep a PDF, document, or other linked file Save Files or Google Drive
Keep a picture from the page Touch and hold, then Save Image Photos or Google Photos

A Reading List entry is for viewing the webpage in Chrome. It is not the same as downloading the page as an independent HTML file or PDF.

Save a webpage for offline reading

  1. Open the Chrome app on your iPhone.
  2. Visit the webpage you want to keep.
  3. Tap More (⋯).
  4. Tap Add to Reading List.
  5. Keep the page open long enough for Chrome to save it while you are online.

Chrome’s Reading List is the built-in option for saving pages to read later or when you are offline. The saved copy is associated with Chrome, so it will not appear as a normal file in the iPhone Files app.

Open a saved page without an internet connection

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Tap More (⋯).
  3. Tap Reading List.
  4. Tap the page you saved.

Offline availability depends on the page being saved successfully before you lose connectivity. Pages that rely heavily on live data, sign-ins, or scripts may not behave exactly like the online version.

Delete a Reading List page

  1. Open More > Reading List.
  2. Swipe left on the saved page.
  3. Tap Delete.

Download a linked PDF or other file

Use this method when the webpage links to a file you want to keep outside Chrome.

  1. Open Chrome and go to the page containing the file.
  2. Tap the file link or attachment.
  3. Tap Save.
  4. On the Save in… screen, choose Files.
  5. Pick a folder such as On My iPhone or iCloud Drive, then tap Save.

Files is the best destination when you need a persistent local or iCloud copy that other iPhone apps can open.

Save a file to Google Drive

  1. Open the file in Chrome.
  2. Tap Save.
  3. Choose Google Drive.
  4. Select the Google Account and destination folder.
  5. Tap Save.

If Chrome does not show Save, tap the file, tap Share, choose Save to Files, select a destination, and tap Save.

Save an image from a webpage

  1. Touch and hold the image.
  2. Tap Save Image.
  3. If offered, choose an account to save it to Google Photos.

The result is an image copy, separate from the webpage in Reading List.

Find and manage Chrome downloads

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Tap More (⋯).
  3. Tap Downloads.

Touch and hold a downloaded filename to copy it, share it, or remove it. The Downloads screen is Chrome’s index of saved files and photos; the actual file may be stored in Files, iCloud Drive, or another destination you selected.

Why a downloaded file disappears

Opening a file in another app without explicitly saving it can place it in a temporary folder. Chrome may remove that temporary copy when the Chrome window closes. Use Save to Files when you need the file to persist.

Reading List versus a downloaded file

Question Reading List Downloaded file
Can I read the page offline? Yes, after saving it online Only if the file itself supports offline viewing
Does it create a normal file? No Yes, when saved to Files or Drive
Can another app open it? Usually through Chrome Yes, using the file’s Share or Open In actions
Best use Articles and pages you want to revisit PDFs, images, documents, and archives

Troubleshooting

Add to Reading List is missing

Open the page in Chrome itself, then tap More. The option may not appear in an iOS Share Sheet or in another browser. If the page is still loading, wait for it to finish and try again.

The saved page will not open offline

Reconnect to the internet and save it again. A page may not have finished downloading, or it may depend on live content, an account session, or scripts that cannot run offline.

Save is not shown for a PDF or document

Tap the file first. If the viewer has no Save button, use Share, choose Save to Files, select a folder, and confirm Save.

I cannot find the file

Check Chrome’s More > Downloads list, then open the destination you selected in the Files app or Google Drive. Search by filename if the folder is unknown.

The file vanished after I opened it in another app

It was probably opened from a temporary Chrome handoff. Download it again and choose Save to Files or Google Drive before closing Chrome.

There is not enough storage

Delete unused Reading List entries and downloads, or save files to Google Drive. Reading List does not publish a quota or retention period, so keep important documents as explicit files in a destination you control.

When you need a permanent screenshot or PDF

Reading List preserves a page for later viewing in Chrome. If you need a fixed visual copy for documentation, testing, sharing, or an archive, ScreenshotNeo can capture a webpage as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF through one GET request.

Or skip the browser setup

Use the ScreenshotNeo API when you want an image or PDF instead of an iPhone-only Reading List entry. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters and response details.

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
