Easiest Way to Screenshot on iPad

The easiest way to screenshot on an iPad depends on whether it has a Home button. On an iPad without a Home button, quickly press and release the top button and either volume button together. On an iPad with a Home button, quickly press and release the top button and Home button together. A thumbnail appears in the lower-left corner; tap it to edit or share, or swipe it away to dismiss it.

Which button combination should you use?

iPad design Buttons What to do
No Home button Top + either volume button Press and release both quickly at the same time.
Home button Top + Home button Press and release both quickly at the same time.

The buttons do not need to be held down. A long press can open the power-off or emergency controls instead of making a screenshot. If the first attempt does not work, release both buttons completely and try a shorter, simultaneous press.

Take a screenshot on an iPad without a Home button

  1. Open the screen you want to save.
  2. Press the top button and either volume button at the same time.
  3. Quickly release both buttons.
  4. Look for the temporary thumbnail in the lower-left corner.

Tap the thumbnail to open the screenshot editor. If you do not need to edit it, swipe the thumbnail left and continue using the iPad. The capture is still saved in Photos.

Take a screenshot on an iPad with a Home button

  1. Display the content you want to capture.
  2. Press the top button and the Home button together.
  3. Release both buttons quickly.
  4. Tap the lower-left thumbnail to preview it, or swipe left to dismiss the thumbnail.

Use the same short, simultaneous press every time. The Home button is the circular button on the front of older iPad models.

What to do with the screenshot thumbnail

The thumbnail is a shortcut to the preview, not a separate file you must save manually. Tap it before it disappears to open editing controls. Depending on the content and iPadOS version, you can:

  • Crop the image to remove unwanted edges.
  • Use Markup to draw, highlight, add shapes or write notes.
  • Share it with Messages, Mail, AirDrop or another installed app.
  • Save or export the edited result.
  • Delete or cancel the capture.

Swipe the thumbnail away when you want to keep working immediately. The screenshot remains available in Photos.

Find screenshots later in Photos

Open Photos, then go to Collections, Media Types and Screenshots. This view filters out camera photos and makes it easier to find captures from a particular app or webpage. You can also use Photos search if you remember a date, location or visual subject.

If a screenshot seems to be missing, check that you dismissed only the thumbnail and did not cancel the preview. Also check Recently Deleted if it was removed after capture, and allow Photos time to finish syncing if iCloud Photos is enabled.

Capture a full webpage instead of only the visible screen

A normal screenshot records the pixels currently visible. For a long webpage in Safari or other supported content, iPadOS can capture the entire page.

Full Page captures can preserve a supported webpage beyond the visible screen.
Full Page captures can preserve a supported webpage beyond the visible screen.
  1. Open the webpage.
  2. Take a normal screenshot with the appropriate button combination.
  3. Tap the thumbnail.
  4. At the top of the preview, choose Full Page.
  5. Review the page preview and use the available controls to crop or mark it up.
  6. Save the result as an image in Photos or as a PDF in Files, depending on the available option.

The Full Page tab appears only when the app and content support a scrollable document. A static app screen, a video frame or a page that has not finished loading may offer only the visible-screen capture. If Full Page is unavailable, use the browser’s print or share workflow, or capture several sections and combine them into a document.

Use Siri when your hands are busy

Apple documents Siri as an alternative way to take a screenshot. Activate Siri using your configured voice or button shortcut and ask it to take a screenshot. The exact wording can vary by iPadOS language and settings. Siri may require an internet connection for some requests, so the hardware shortcut is the dependable fallback when voice recognition fails.

Use AssistiveTouch for an on-screen screenshot button

AssistiveTouch adds a floating on-screen control, useful when a physical button is difficult to press or you want a one-handed workflow.

  1. Open Settings and choose Accessibility.
  2. Open Touch, then AssistiveTouch.
  3. Turn on AssistiveTouch.
  4. Use Customize Top Level Menu or a custom action such as single-tap, double-tap or long-press.
  5. Assign the Screenshot action to that control.

Tap the floating button or use the assigned gesture whenever you need a capture. You can move the control to the edge of the display so it covers less content.

Take a screenshot with Apple Pencil

On supported iPad models, swipe Apple Pencil diagonally upward from either bottom corner. iPadOS opens the screenshot workspace, where you can mark up the capture with the Pencil, then use Share or Done to send or save it. Pencil compatibility varies by iPad model and Pencil generation; the standard button shortcut works without a Pencil.

Adjust screenshot behavior in Settings

Apple’s current iPad guide places screenshot controls under Settings > General > Screen Capture. Depending on your iPadOS version, you may be able to choose whether captures open full-screen or appear as temporary thumbnails and adjust capture format options. Menu names can change between releases, so confirm the iPadOS version before following a version-specific walkthrough.

Screenshot troubleshooting checklist

The screenshot does not appear

  • Cause: The buttons were pressed one after another or held too long.
  • Fix: Press the correct pair simultaneously, then release immediately. Verify whether your iPad has a Home button.

The power-off screen opens

  • Cause: The top button was held down, or the second button was pressed too late.
  • Fix: Use a quick press-and-release rather than a hold. Try AssistiveTouch if the physical timing is difficult.

The thumbnail disappeared before you tapped it

  • Cause: The temporary preview was swiped away or timed out.
  • Fix: Open Photos and look in Collections > Media Types > Screenshots. The thumbnail is optional; the file is still saved.

Full Page is missing

  • Cause: The current app or content does not expose a scrollable document, or the page has not finished loading.
  • Fix: Try again in Safari after the page loads. For unsupported content, use print-to-PDF or multiple regular captures.

The screenshot is blank or incomplete

  • Cause: The app may protect sensitive content, the page may be loading dynamic sections, or a video frame may not have rendered.
  • Fix: Wait for content to finish loading, pause video where appropriate, and check whether the app permits screen capture. Do not assume a screenshot can bypass an app’s privacy controls.

Markup or sharing is unavailable

  • Cause: The thumbnail was dismissed, or an older iPadOS interface is being used.
  • Fix: Reopen the image in Photos and use Edit or Share there. Update iPadOS when your device supports the update.

Choosing the right capture method

Or skip the browser setup

If you need screenshots of websites for documentation, testing or an automated workflow rather than a one-off iPad capture, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one GET request. Read the API documentation for all options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the shot was billed. Options include full-page or CSS-selector capture, device presets and custom viewports, dark mode, retina scale, PDF paper settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocked resources, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs, webhooks, bulk capture and a usage API. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Performance, reliability and cost considerations

  • Local iPad captures: They are immediate and free, but manual and limited to what the iPad can display.
  • Full-page captures: They may take longer because the browser must load content below the fold, including lazy-loaded images.
  • Automation: Wait for a selector, delay or network idle when pages render dynamically. Block unnecessary ads, trackers or resource types to reduce loading work.
  • Repeat jobs: Choose a cache TTL when identical pages do not need a fresh render. Use asynchronous jobs and signed webhooks for long or high-volume work.
  • Billing: ScreenshotNeo bills only clean shots. Inspect X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed when recording usage or investigating a failed capture.
