The easiest way to screenshot depends on your iPhone’s buttons:

  • Face ID models: Quickly press and release the Side button and Volume Up button together.
  • Home button models: Quickly press and release the Side button and Home button together.
  • Top-button models: Quickly press and release the Top button and Home button together.

The screenshot is saved in Photos. Apple’s current instructions are in its iPhone screenshot support article.

1. Use the button shortcut for your iPhone

iPhone with Face ID

  1. Open the screen you want to capture.
  2. Press and release the Side button and Volume Up at the same time.
  3. Release both buttons quickly. Holding them can open the power-off or Emergency SOS screen.

iPhone with a Home button

  1. Open the content you want to save.
  2. Press and release the Side button and Home button together.
  3. Release immediately after the screen flashes.

iPhone with a Top button and Home button

Some older iPhone models use a Top button instead of a Side button. Press and release the Top button and Home button together.

2. Edit, share, or mark up the screenshot

After capture, iOS displays the screenshot with quick tools. The exact presentation depends on your iOS version: iOS 26 can show the screenshot automatically, while iOS 18 and earlier commonly show a temporary thumbnail in the lower-left corner.

  1. Tap the preview or thumbnail to open the editor.
  2. Drag the corner handles to crop.
  3. Use Markup to draw, add text, add a shape, or highlight an area.
  4. Use the share button to send it through Messages, Mail, AirDrop, or another installed app.
  5. Tap Done, then choose whether to save or delete it.

If you do nothing, the image remains available in Photos.

3. Capture an entire webpage with Full Page

For a long Safari page, take a normal screenshot first, then tap Full Page when that control appears.

  1. Open the webpage in Safari.
  2. Take a screenshot with the button shortcut.
  3. Tap the screenshot preview.
  4. Select Full Page at the top of the editor.
  5. Scroll the document preview to check the captured area.
  6. Save the result as an image or PDF, depending on the available save option.

Full Page is intended for supported scrollable content such as a Safari webpage. It will not turn every app view into one continuous document.

4. Screenshot without pressing the buttons

Back Tap

On iPhone 8 or later, assign the screenshot action to a double or triple tap on the back of the phone:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Accessibility → Touch → Back Tap.
  3. Choose Double Tap or Triple Tap.
  4. Select Screenshot.

Back Tap can trigger accidentally if the gesture is too sensitive. Triple Tap usually reduces accidental captures.

AssistiveTouch

  1. Go to Settings → Accessibility → Touch → AssistiveTouch.
  2. Turn on AssistiveTouch.
  3. Choose a custom action or open the AssistiveTouch menu.
  4. Select Screenshot.

This is useful when a physical button is difficult to press or unreliable.

Siri

Say “Hey Siri, take a screenshot” or activate Siri with your configured button or gesture and ask for a screenshot. Siri is useful when you cannot comfortably reach the hardware controls.

5. Find screenshots later

Screenshots are stored in Photos. To browse them, open Photos, go to Collections, then Media Types → Screenshots. You can crop, annotate, duplicate, share, or delete them from there.

6. Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause Fix
Power-off or Emergency SOS appears The buttons were held instead of pressed briefly. Press and release Side + Volume Up quickly. Do not hold them.
Nothing is captured The two buttons were pressed one after the other. Press both at exactly the same time, then release.
Home button shortcut fails The phone uses a Top button or the Home button is not registering. Try Top + Home on older models, or configure AssistiveTouch or Back Tap.
Back Tap does not work The feature is disabled, the wrong gesture is assigned, or the tap is too light. Recheck Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Back Tap and try a firmer double or triple tap.
The screenshot is not in Photos It may still be open in the editor or was deleted after tapping Done. Finish the save action, then check Collections → Media Types → Screenshots and Recently Deleted.
Full Page is missing The app or page does not provide a supported scrollable document. Use a normal screenshot, capture several sections, or export the content from the app itself.
The image is cut off The screenshot captured only the visible viewport. Use Full Page in Safari when available, or take multiple screenshots and combine them in an editor.
Private information is visible Screenshot captures exactly what is on screen. Crop or mark up passwords, addresses, notifications, and account identifiers before sharing.

7. Choosing the right method

Need Best method
Fastest one-off capture Hardware button shortcut
Buttons are hard to press AssistiveTouch
Hands are occupied Siri
Repeatable gesture Back Tap
Long Safari article Full Page
Sharing a sensitive image Screenshot, then crop or mark up before sending

8. Or skip the browser setup

If you need screenshots of websites for documentation, testing, previews, or an automated workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the complete request reference.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Relevant options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, PDF paper size and margins, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks before capture, hidden selectors, waits for a selector or network idle, blocked ads and trackers, custom headers and cookies, user-agent and Authorization headers, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, image resizing, a chosen cache TTL, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, and a usage API.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is included on every plan.

Create a free ScreenshotNeo account and start with 1,000 screenshots a month without a card.

9. Performance, reliability, and storage notes

  • For a single phone screenshot: the hardware shortcut is immediate and works offline because the image is generated on the device.
  • For long pages: Full Page can produce a larger image or PDF, so allow extra time when sharing or uploading it.
  • For automated website captures: wait for the page state you need, use selector or network-idle waits for dynamic content, and cache stable URLs with a TTL to avoid repeated work.
  • For sensitive pages: review the image before sharing and avoid including notifications or personal data.
  • For API cost control: use element capture when a full page is unnecessary, cache repeated URLs, and inspect the X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
