Edge Web Capture saves only the visible area: how to fix it
Use Edge’s Capture full page option, or DevTools’ full-size screenshot command, to capture beyond the visible area. Here’s how to troubleshoot both.
If Edge Web Capture saves only what is visible, open the Web Capture tool and choose Capture full page. Press Ctrl+Shift+S, or open Settings and more and choose Web Capture. Select Capture full page, review the result, then save it. For an alternative, use Edge DevTools’ Capture a full size screenshot command.
These are different from Capture area, which is meant to select a region. Edge’s menu labels and availability may vary by build or region, so use the DevTools route if the full-page choice is missing. Microsoft’s Web Capture guide documents the menu workflow and notes that functionality can change and regional availability may differ.
Use Web Capture’s full-page option
- Open the page you want to capture in Microsoft Edge and wait for it to finish loading.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+S. Alternatively, open Settings and more and select Web Capture.
- Select Capture full page. Do not choose Capture area if you need content below the viewport.
- Review the capture, then save it. Edge also offers copy and markup options in its capture workflow.
If you cannot find Capture full page, move to the DevTools method below. Microsoft’s guide was published January 2, 2024; the labels are documented, but Microsoft cautions that functionality and availability can vary.
Capture the full page with Edge DevTools
- Open the page in Edge and open DevTools with F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I.
- Turn on the Device Toolbar in DevTools.
- Open the Device Toolbar’s More options menu.
- Choose Capture a full size screenshot.
This command captures content beyond the current viewport. See Microsoft’s Edge DevTools documentation. It is a useful fallback when the regular capture menu is unavailable or its result remains viewport-sized.
Check what is actually scrolling
Scroll the page normally and note whether the browser’s main document moves, or whether only an inner panel, sidebar, or frame scrolls. A full-page command is intended to capture the page beyond its viewport. If the content you need lives in an embedded frame or a separately scrolling panel, the capture may not include it as expected.
Reports in Microsoft Q&A describe problems with sidebar or frame scrolling, but those are user reports, not confirmation of a universal Edge limitation. Treat this as a diagnostic clue: try scrolling the inner panel to the content you need and capture the visible area, or check whether the embedded content has its own export or print option.
Why a capture may still look incomplete
- Area capture was selected: use Capture full page or the DevTools full-size command.
- The full-page menu option is missing: use DevTools; Edge’s documented UI can vary.
- The site loads content as you scroll: scroll through the page first so lazy-loaded sections have a chance to appear, then capture again.
- The page uses an inner scrolling region: the main document and the panel may behave as separate scroll areas. Try capturing the panel’s content while it is visible.
- The page is an embedded PDF, form, or dynamic viewer: behavior can vary, and the available sources do not establish reliable full-page capture for every embedded or dynamically rendered page. Try the viewer’s own download, print, or export control.
Historical selection workflow
The Edge Product Team’s September 28, 2020 announcement described an earlier selection workflow: “To do this, just hold down the selection tool and drag to the bottom of the page; the page will automatically start to scroll so that you can capture everything you need in one go.” This is historical guidance for selecting and scrolling while dragging. For the current documented full-page workflow, choose Capture full page.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a repeatable screenshot in code, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF. For a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Troubleshooting checklist
| Symptom | Likely explanation | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Only the visible region was saved | Area capture was used, or the full-page capture did not complete as expected. | Choose Capture full page; if the result remains viewport-sized, use DevTools’ full-size screenshot. |
| No full-page option in Web Capture | The installed Edge build or regional availability may differ. | Use the DevTools method and check Microsoft’s current documentation for your build. |
| Lower sections are blank or missing | Content may load dynamically or only after scrolling. | Scroll the document to trigger loading, wait for content to appear, and capture again. |
| An embedded document or form is incomplete | Embedded viewers can have capture behavior that varies. | Use the embedded app’s download, print, or export feature when available. |
| A sidebar’s contents are missing | The sidebar may scroll independently of the main document. | Scroll the panel itself and capture the needed content while it is visible; treat this as a possible cause, not a confirmed general Edge defect. |
Performance and reliability notes
A full-page capture includes more content than an area capture, so long pages and pages that load content while scrolling can take longer or produce larger images. Let the page settle before capturing, and check the saved result for missing lazy-loaded sections. If one method fails, the built-in DevTools full-size command is the documented alternative. Neither method should be assumed to capture every embedded viewer or dynamic site correctly.
