How to Enable Dark Mode for All Websites in Edge

Make Edge dark everywhere: switch the browser theme, force dark webpage rendering, fix broken pages, and automate dark screenshots with ScreenshotNeo.

To enable dark mode everywhere in Microsoft Edge, use two settings together: set Edge’s interface to Dark, then enable Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents from edge://flags/#enable-force-dark. The first setting darkens Edge’s menus and browser chrome; the flag attempts to darken the pages you visit. If the flag makes a site unreadable, reset it to Default or use the Dark Reader extension for per-site controls.

1. What Edge’s dark mode actually changes

Edge has separate controls for the browser interface and webpage content.

Approach Scope Controls Trade-off
Appearance > Dark Edge menus, tabs, toolbars and browser chrome One theme choice Websites may remain white
Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents Attempts to transform webpage colors across sites Several rendering modes Experimental; some pages, images or controls can render incorrectly
Dark Reader extension Website content Brightness, contrast, sepia, font settings and site exclusions Requires installing and maintaining an extension

Edge’s built-in Dark appearance changes the browser’s bright background to a darker color. It does not force each website to provide or accept a native dark theme. The force-dark flag applies a browser-level rendering transformation, so it is different from a site’s own dark-mode switch.

2. Turn on Edge’s dark browser theme

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Select the three-dot Settings and more menu.
  3. Choose Settings.
  4. Select Appearance in the sidebar.
  5. Under Overall appearance, select Dark.

This changes Edge’s interface immediately. A website can still display a light page because its own HTML and CSS are separate from the browser chrome.

3. Force dark rendering on webpages

  1. Copy edge://flags/#enable-force-dark into Edge’s address bar and press Enter.
  2. Find Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents.
  3. Open its drop-down menu and choose the dark rendering mode that gives the best result on your sites.
  4. Select Restart or Relaunch when Edge prompts you.

After Edge restarts, the browser attempts to render visited pages with darker colors. The exact result depends on each site’s CSS, images, SVGs, videos, forms and JavaScript widgets. A site with a carefully designed native dark theme may look better when its own control is enabled than when the browser transforms it.

Reset the flag

Return to edge://flags/#enable-force-dark, set Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents to Default, and restart Edge. Use this when text loses contrast, images become color-inverted, controls disappear or a page’s layout breaks.

4. Use Dark Reader for site-by-site control

If the experimental flag is too aggressive, install Dark Reader for Microsoft Edge. Its Edge Add-ons listing describes controls for brightness, contrast, sepia, fonts and per-site enable/disable rules.

  1. Open Microsoft Edge Add-ons and search for Dark Reader, or open its listing directly.
  2. Select Get and confirm the extension installation.
  3. Open the extension from Edge’s toolbar.
  4. Choose a dark theme and adjust brightness or contrast.
  5. Add sites to the enabled or disabled list when a page needs its original colors.

Dark Reader is useful when you want most sites dark but need exceptions for design tools, maps, image galleries, documentation diagrams or sites whose native dark theme is better.

5. Choose the right method

  • Choose Appearance > Dark when you only want darker Edge controls.
  • Choose Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents when you want a built-in global attempt with no extension.
  • Choose Dark Reader when you need tuning and exclusions for individual websites.
  • Use a site’s own dark-mode switch when it exists and renders its content correctly.

6. Troubleshooting dark mode

Edge is dark but websites are still white

The Appearance setting affects Edge’s interface, not every page. Enable edge://flags/#enable-force-dark and restart, or install Dark Reader.

Only some parts of a page become dark

Websites can mix hard-coded colors, images, canvases, embedded documents and third-party widgets. Try another force-dark mode, use the site’s native theme, or add the site to a Dark Reader rule.

Text is difficult to read

Reset the flag to Default and restart. With Dark Reader, raise contrast or brightness and test the site’s own dark theme.

Images and logos look inverted

Browser-level color transformations can affect image assets and SVGs. Disable force dark for that site or use an extension exclusion. Keep brand assets in their original colors when accurate visual review matters.

Forms, menus or buttons are broken

Some controls rely on platform colors or tightly controlled CSS. Reset the flag, then enable dark rendering through the site or Dark Reader instead.

The flag is missing or behaves differently

Flags are experimental and can change between Edge builds. Search for Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents on the flags page, verify that Edge is current, and use Dark Reader if the option is unavailable.

A work computer blocks flags or extensions

Managed Edge policies can remove access to experimental settings or restrict add-ons. Ask your administrator which appearance policies are allowed; do not rely on a flag that your organization resets.

7. Accessibility and visual checks

  • Check body text, links, focused controls and disabled controls at normal zoom.
  • Verify that syntax highlighting, charts and status colors remain distinguishable.
  • Open a private window or a second profile if an extension’s site rules differ between profiles.
  • Review pages with photos, maps and video because dark transformations can change perceived colors.
  • Test keyboard focus after enabling a theme; a dark background can hide low-contrast focus outlines.

8. Performance and reliability notes

The built-in theme has negligible effect on page loading because it changes Edge’s interface. Force-dark rendering and extensions apply styling after or during page rendering, so complex pages may briefly flash light colors or require a repaint. Extensions also add another component that can be disabled by private browsing settings, enterprise policy or profile configuration.

For repeatable screenshots, keep the browser version, profile, extension rules and viewport consistent. Capture a representative set of pages after changing the flag because visual results vary by site.

9. Or skip the browser setup

For automated dark screenshots, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and can render it in dark mode through its screenshot API. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

10. FAQ

Does Edge dark mode change a website’s actual design?

The browser theme changes Edge’s interface. The force-dark flag and extensions alter how webpage content is rendered in your browser; they do not edit the website’s source files.

Will force dark mode work on every website?

It attempts to darken all visited pages, but results vary. Images, embedded content, custom controls and unusual CSS can remain bright or look incorrect.

Can I keep one website light?

Dark Reader supports per-site exclusions. The built-in force-dark flag is global, so use an extension or the site’s own theme when you need granular exceptions.

Is the Edge force-dark flag permanent?

It remains enabled until you change it, but experimental flags and their behavior can change with Edge updates.

Can I generate dark screenshots without opening Edge?

Yes. ScreenshotNeo’s API supports dark-mode captures from a URL, and its MCP server lets compatible AI agents request screenshots.
