How to Enable Dark Mode on Webpages on iPhone

Make iPhone webpages easier on your eyes with Dark Mode, Safari Reader, or Smart Invert. Learn which method works for each kind of site.

Quick answer: Open Settings > Display & Brightness, select Dark, and supported websites will follow your iPhone’s appearance setting. You can also open Control Center, press and hold the brightness control, and tap Dark Mode. If a site remains bright, try Safari Reader or Smart Invert.

1. Turn on system Dark Mode

iPhone’s Dark Mode changes the appearance of the operating system and apps that support it. Some websites also respond to this setting through the browser’s dark-color preference, but Apple does not state that the switch forces every website to render a dark theme.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Display & Brightness.
  3. Under Appearance, tap Dark.

To switch it quickly:

  1. Open Control Center.
  2. Touch and hold the brightness bar.
  3. Tap Dark Mode.

Apple’s instructions also describe an Automatic option. Choose Automatic under Display & Brightness, then open Options to use a schedule such as sunset to sunrise or a custom schedule. See Apple’s Dark Mode instructions.

2. Schedule Dark Mode

Scheduling changes the iPhone appearance at the times you choose. It does not guarantee that every webpage will become dark, because the site must support the browser’s appearance preference.

  1. Go to Settings > Display & Brightness.
  2. Select Automatic.
  3. Tap Options.
  4. Choose Sunset to Sunrise or Custom Schedule.

3. Use Safari Reader when the page supports it

Safari Reader removes navigation, ads, and other page elements and presents the article’s main text and images in a simplified reading view. It is useful for reading, but it is not a universal dark-theme switch and it is unavailable on some pages.

  1. Open the page in Safari.
  2. Tap the Page Menu button in the address bar.
  3. Tap Show Reader.

To make Reader automatic for the current site, open the Page Menu, tap Website Settings, and turn on Use Reader Automatically. To enable it for supported sites generally, go to Settings > Apps > Safari > Reader and turn on All Websites. Apple documents these controls in Hide distractions when reading articles in Safari and Safari settings.

To return to the original page, open the Page Menu and tap Hide Reader.

4. Use Smart Invert when a site stays bright

Smart Invert reverses display colors except for images. It can help with websites and apps that do not provide a Dark Mode, but it affects the display system-wide rather than changing only one webpage.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Accessibility > Display & Text Size.
  3. Turn on Smart Invert.

Apple’s accessibility guidance states: “Smart Invert reverses the colors of the display, except for images.” That means photos may keep their original colors while backgrounds, text, and controls are inverted. Classic Invert reverses all onscreen colors and usually produces stronger visual side effects. Read Apple’s display-color guidance.

5. Choose the right method

Method Scope Works on every site? Visual effect
System Dark Mode iPhone, apps, and sites that support the preference No Native dark themes where available
Safari Reader One supported article or site No Simplified reading layout; removes page chrome
Smart Invert Whole display Often works when a site lacks Dark Mode Inverts colors while preserving many images
Classic Invert Whole display Usually changes everything All colors, including images, are inverted

6. Troubleshooting

Dark Mode is on, but the website is still white

The site may not implement a dark theme or may override the browser preference. Try Safari Reader for an article or Smart Invert for a screen-wide workaround.

There is no “Show Reader” option

Reader availability depends on the webpage. Try a different article page, reload Safari, or use Smart Invert instead.

Smart Invert makes photos or icons look wrong

Smart Invert preserves many images but can still alter icons, videos, diagrams, and custom graphics. Turn it off from Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size when finished. Use Safari Reader if you only need a readable article.

Dark Mode keeps changing by itself

Check Settings > Display & Brightness. If Automatic is selected, review Options and the custom schedule.

Reader removed content I need

Reader intentionally strips page elements. Tap the Page Menu and choose Hide Reader to return to the full webpage.

7. Capturing a dark webpage for documentation or automation

If you need an image of a webpage rather than a viewing preference on your phone, a browser automation script can set a dark color scheme and capture the page. The exact implementation depends on the browser automation library. For repeatable captures, wait for the page to finish loading, set the viewport you need, and save the result in PNG, JPEG, or WebP.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; its capture options include dark mode, full-page screenshots, element selection, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, device presets, and more. The API also accepts custom headers, cookies, user agents, timezone, and geolocation settings.

Use the API documentation for all parameters and options: ScreenshotNeo API docs.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

8. Performance, reliability, and cost notes

  • System Dark Mode and Smart Invert take effect immediately and require no network request.
  • Safari Reader depends on the page being recognized as a readable article.
  • For automated captures, wait for lazy-loaded images and dynamic content before saving the image.
  • ScreenshotNeo supports caching with a TTL you choose, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, and a usage API.
  • Only clean ScreenshotNeo shots are billed; failed loads and cache hits cost nothing.
