How to Enable Firefox Screenshots When the Toolbar Button Is Missing

Restore the Firefox Screenshot button, use the built-in shortcuts, and check what to do if the control is missing from the toolbar customization panel.

If the Firefox Screenshot button is missing, open the Firefox menu and choose More Tools > Customize Toolbar. Drag Screenshot from the customization palette to the toolbar, then click Done. If you need a screenshot right away, right-click an empty part of the page and choose Take Screenshot, or use Ctrl + Shift + S on Windows and Linux or Command + Shift + S on macOS. These steps follow Mozilla’s current Firefox Screenshots instructions.

1. Put the Screenshot button back on the toolbar

  1. Click the Firefox menu button.
  2. Choose More Tools, then Customize Toolbar. Firefox opens the toolbar customization view.
  3. Find Screenshot in the palette. Drag it to the toolbar position you want. You can also put it in the overflow menu.
  4. Click Done to save the toolbar layout.

The button is an optional toolbar control. Its absence from the toolbar does not by itself mean the screenshot feature is unavailable.

2. Take a screenshot without the toolbar button

Firefox documents two other ways to open its built-in screenshot tool:

  • Context menu: Right-click an empty area of the page and select Take Screenshot. On macOS, you can Control-click.
  • Keyboard shortcut: Press Ctrl + Shift + S on Windows or Linux, or Command + Shift + S on macOS.

These routes are useful if you do not want to change your toolbar, or if you are checking whether the tool works while troubleshooting the missing button. Mozilla’s shortcut and menu instructions are in its Firefox help article.

3. Choose what to capture

Once the Screenshot tool opens, Firefox offers several capture choices:

  • Selected region: Click and drag to mark an area. Adjust the selection with its handles before capturing.
  • Highlighted page part: Move the pointer over the page to highlight page elements, then click the part you want.
  • Full page: Choose Save full page.
  • Visible area: Choose Save visible to capture the part currently on screen.

You can save the image to Firefox’s default download folder or copy it to the clipboard. The exact capture you choose depends on whether you need a whole page, a particular element, or only what is currently visible.

4. If Screenshot is missing from the customization palette

If there is no Screenshot item to drag, check whether the feature is disabled and whether Firefox is managed by an organization. Mozilla Support guidance for a Firefox 120 case recommends checking two preferences and any policy that may disable screenshots. Treat this as a troubleshooting lead from that support case, not as a universal explanation or a guarantee that the same settings apply to every Firefox version.

Check the preferences carefully

  1. Enter about:config in the address bar and press Enter.
  2. Read the warning and continue only if you are comfortable inspecting advanced preferences.
  3. Search for extensions.screenshots.disabled and screenshots.browser.component.enabled.
  4. Compare their values with the guidance in the Mozilla Support answer for Firefox 120. That answer says both should be false.
  5. If a preference is absent, or the value does not match the guidance, do not assume changing it is appropriate for your Firefox version. Check current Mozilla guidance or ask your administrator, especially on a managed device.

Firefox policies can control browser features. Open about:policies to inspect whether policies are active. The policy check is also mentioned in the Firefox 120 support answer; an organization-managed setting may require an administrator to change it.

Restore the default toolbar layout

If Screenshot is missing both from the toolbar and the customization palette, the same support answer suggests choosing Restore Defaults in the Customize Toolbar view. The person who reported the Firefox 120 issue said this resolved their case. It is a reasonable recovery step, but a single report does not establish that it will fix every missing button.

5. Troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom Likely next step
The button is not on the toolbar, but appears in Customize Toolbar. Drag Screenshot onto the toolbar and click Done.
The button is missing, but the context-menu command or shortcut works. The feature is reachable; use that route, then restore the toolbar button through Customize Toolbar.
Screenshot is absent from both the toolbar and customization palette. Check about:config and about:policies as described above, then consider Restore Defaults. The advanced preference advice comes from a version-specific support case.
The controls are missing on a work or school device. Inspect about:policies. If the browser is managed, ask the organization’s administrator whether a policy controls the feature.
The shortcut does not open the tool. Confirm the shortcut for your operating system and try the page context menu. If both routes fail, investigate the feature and policy checks rather than repeatedly pressing the shortcut.
The context menu is unavailable on the page. Try the keyboard shortcut or add the toolbar button through Customize Toolbar.
Keyboard crosshair movement does not work on Wayland. Mozilla notes that moving the crosshair does not work on Wayland. Use pointer movement for selection instead.

6. Privacy notes

Mozilla’s help article says Firefox Screenshots collects interaction data, such as whether users choose Copy or Save full page, and does not collect the URL or details of the captured image. Mozilla says technical and interaction data collection can be disabled in Firefox’s data-collection settings, and that website data collection follows the browser’s Do Not Track setting. These are Mozilla’s statements about the feature; see the Mozilla article for its scope and settings.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to capture web pages from code or an AI agent, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For restoring Firefox’s own toolbar button, use the browser steps above; for repeatable website captures, make one API call:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

FAQ

Does the missing toolbar button mean Firefox removed Screenshots?

No. The button can be absent from the toolbar while the tool remains available through the context menu or keyboard shortcut. Check Customize Toolbar to see whether you can add it back.

Can I capture only what is visible instead of the whole page?

Yes. Choose Save visible in the screenshot controls. Choose Save full page when you need the full document.

Should I change an advanced preference if I cannot find Screenshot?

First inspect the preference and policy context. The cited Mozilla Support recommendation is tied to a Firefox 120 case, so do not treat it as a universal current default. On a managed device, check with the administrator before changing settings.
