How to Enable Dark Mode on a Google Search Results Page
Turn Google Search dark mode on from Search settings on desktop or mobile, and learn how it differs from Chrome and the Google app.
Desktop answer: Open Google Search, choose Settings, open Search settings, select Appearance, choose Dark, then click Save. This changes the Google homepage, search results pages and Search settings pages. It does not change Chrome’s separate browser theme.
1. Turn on dark mode on desktop
- Open Google Search and run a search, or open the Google homepage.
- Click Settings. Google’s desktop instructions place this control at the top right.
- Select Search settings.
- Open Appearance.
- Choose Dark.
- Click Save.
Google may change the location or wording of these controls. If you do not see the menu immediately, open a results page first and look for Settings and then Appearance in Search settings.
Choose the right appearance option
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Dark | Uses Google Search’s dark appearance. |
| Light | Uses the light Search appearance. |
| Device default | Follows your computer or device color scheme. |
The setting applies to Search pages, including the homepage, results page and Search settings. Google Search Product Support Manager Hung F. described these as “the Google homepage, search results page, and Search settings, among others” in the desktop announcement.
2. Turn on dark mode in a mobile browser
- Open
google.comin your mobile browser. - Run a search.
- Tap More, then Settings.
- Under Appearance, choose Dark theme.
Google’s mobile help may call the control Dark theme instead of dark mode. The other choices are usually Device default and Light theme.
Some versions show a shortcut under More called Dark theme: On/Off. Use it when available. Device default follows the current color scheme configured on your phone or tablet.
When you are signed in, Google says the selected Search theme can be saved across mobile devices and tablets. The Search preference is separate from the browser’s own theme setting.
3. Google app on iPhone: a separate setting
Google Search in a mobile browser and the Google app do not use exactly the same controls. Google documents an Auto Dark mode feature for web pages opened from the Google app:
- Set the iPhone itself to dark mode.
- Open a link from the Google app’s Home or Search results page.
- Tap More, then Settings and more.
- Open Auto Dark mode and turn on the toggle.
- Use Modify for this site if you want to adjust the behavior for one site.
This controls web pages opened from the app. It is different from the Search appearance menu in a mobile browser.
4. Google Search dark mode versus Chrome dark mode
Changing Search’s Appearance changes Google Search pages. It does not automatically change Chrome’s menus, new-tab page or every website you visit. Chrome has its own dark-mode and theme controls.
- Use Google Search settings when only Google’s homepage and results should be dark.
- Use Chrome’s settings when you want the browser interface or supported websites to follow a dark theme.
- Use your operating system’s appearance setting when you want apps configured for Device default to follow one system-wide choice.
5. If Appearance or Dark theme is missing
| Symptom | Likely context | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No Appearance option | You may be in Chrome settings or a different Google product. | Return to a Google results page, open Google Search’s own Settings, then look for Search settings and Appearance. |
| Search stays light | The device or browser may be using a separate theme. | Confirm that Dark or Dark theme is selected, then save. Do not rely only on Chrome’s theme switch. |
| Menu names differ | Google changes layouts and labels by platform and version. | Look for the Appearance section in Search settings. On mobile, check More > Settings from an actual results page. |
| One device changes but another does not | The devices may use different contexts or you may not be signed in. | Check the Search setting on that device. Signed-in mobile users can have the preference saved across devices, but browser and app controls remain separate. |
| Pages opened from the Google app remain light | Auto Dark mode is disabled or the iPhone is in light mode. | Enable iPhone dark mode, then turn on More > Settings and more > Auto Dark mode in the Google app. |
6. Capturing a dark Google results page
If you need a saved image of the dark results page for documentation, QA or a report, first enable the Search theme in the browser context that will load the page. A screenshot tool must then load the page with the same appearance preference, viewport and account state. A browser screenshot cannot change Google’s Search preference after the page has already rendered unless you automate the setting before capture.
For repeatable captures, record the target URL, viewport, device color scheme, signed-in state and any consent or cookie step. Search results can also vary by location, language, personalization and time.
7. Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL through one request when you need an image file instead of a manually saved browser screenshot. Its options include dark mode, device presets, custom viewports, retina scale, cookies, headers, user agents, timezone and geolocation. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the complete parameter list.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.google.com/search?q=dark+mode -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={
"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY",
"url": "https://www.google.com/search?q=dark+mode",
"dark_mode": "true"
},
timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({
access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY',
url: 'https://www.google.com/search?q=dark+mode',
dark_mode: 'true'
});
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const image = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await Bun.write('shot.webp', image);
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
Create a free ScreenshotNeo account and start with 1,000 screenshots per month at no charge.
8. Practical reliability and cost notes
- Appearance state: Device default can change when the operating system switches between light and dark, so choose explicit Dark for a stable result.
- Account state: Personalization and sign-in can affect Search results independently of the theme.
- Mobile versus app: A browser preference does not automatically configure the Google app, and Chrome’s theme is separate again.
- Automation: Use a fixed viewport, locale, timezone and URL when comparing screenshots over time.
- API billing: ScreenshotNeo bills only clean shots; failed loads, bot checks, blank pages, timeouts and cache hits cost nothing.
9. FAQ
Does Google Search dark mode make every website dark?
No. It changes Google Search pages. Chrome and individual websites have separate theme behavior.
Is dark mode the same as Dark theme?
They refer to the same Search appearance choice. Google’s mobile instructions commonly use the label Dark theme.
Can I make Search follow my phone automatically?
Yes. Choose Device default in the mobile Search Appearance menu.
Why did Google Search switch back to light?
Check whether Device default changed, whether you are using a different browser or app, and whether that context has its own Search setting.
Do I need an extension?
No. Google Search includes a built-in appearance setting. An extension is unnecessary for enabling Search’s own dark theme.
