How to Exclude Ads and Rotating Content from ChangeTower Alerts
Use ChangeTower’s Ignore Elements setting to keep ads, banners, carousels, and other noisy regions from triggering change alerts.
To stop ads and rotating content from triggering ChangeTower alerts, create a single-page monitor, open Advanced Configuration, choose Ignore Elements, select the noisy regions in the setup screenshot, and save. ChangeTower says changes inside ignored areas will not trigger notifications, while the rest of the page remains monitored. ChangeTower Help Center describes this as monitoring the full page while excluding selected elements from change detection.
When to use Ignore Elements
Use this setting when most of the page matters but a few regions change routinely without being useful signals. Typical candidates include ad slots, promotional or announcement banners, consent dialogs, chat widgets, weather or clock widgets, rotating carousels, social feeds, view counts, dates, blog feeds, and personalized content.
If only a small part of the page matters, ChangeTower also offers selective monitoring by marking elements to monitor. Its feature guidance describes the monitor-elements and ignore-elements approaches as separate modes, with one mode used per monitor. Ignore Elements is usually the clearer choice when you want the remainder of the page monitored.
Steps to exclude noisy regions
- Create a single-page monitor for the page you want to track.
- During setup, open Advanced Configuration.
- Choose Ignore Elements in the selective monitoring controls.
- Use the page screenshot shown during setup to select each ad, banner, carousel, or other region whose changes should be excluded. Select the region itself, not nearby content you still want monitored.
- Save the ignored-region selection. After saving, ignored regions are highlighted in red; review the highlights and use Edit to adjust any selection that is too broad or too narrow.
- Finish configuring the monitor and create it. Check the first resulting capture or alert to confirm the useful content is still in scope.
Choose regions carefully
- Ignore a region when its changes are noise. A fixed ad slot that rotates creatives is a good candidate if ad changes do not matter to your monitoring goal.
- Keep meaningful surrounding content selected. Avoid selecting a large container that also includes prices, product availability, article text, or other changes you need to know about.
- Revisit selections when the page layout changes. A redesign can move an ad or change the size of a container, making an earlier selection inaccurate.
- Use monitor-elements mode for a small target. If the page is mostly irrelevant and only one section matters, selecting just that section may make the monitored scope easier to reason about.
Other ways to reduce irrelevant alerts
Ignore Elements controls where ChangeTower looks for changes. Other controls affect what kind of changes matter or how much change is needed:
| Control | Useful when | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Ignore Elements | A few page areas change often but should not matter. | Excludes selected regions from change detection. |
| Monitor Elements | Only a small page region matters. | Limits selective monitoring to chosen elements; it is an alternative mode to ignoring regions. |
| Word-change threshold | You want to disregard small text changes across the monitored scope. | Sets how many word changes are required before an alert is sent. It does not exclude a noisy page region. |
| Keyword monitoring | A particular word or phrase is the signal you care about. | Focuses alerting on specified terms rather than general page changes. |
| Smart Monitor | You can describe the kind of change that matters in natural language. | Applies criteria for relevant changes; selective monitoring may also be available with this monitor type. |
Thresholds, manual user actions, lazy loading, monitor frequency, and email alerts are separate settings in monitor configuration. ChangeTower plan details determine available features and check cadence. Its FAQ lists different schedules by plan, so check your current account and monitor settings rather than relying on a cadence quoted elsewhere.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a clean screenshot of a page for review or a separate capture workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. It does not configure ChangeTower alerts or replace its monitoring controls. One GET request returns an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, no card required.
Troubleshooting
- Ads still trigger alerts: Confirm the ad region was selected in Ignore Elements and saved. Review the red-highlighted region and adjust it with Edit if the selection missed part of the slot.
- Useful content stops triggering alerts: The ignored selection may include a parent area containing both the noisy widget and meaningful content. Edit the selection to narrow its scope, then verify the highlighted region.
- A carousel or banner moves after setup: The saved selection may no longer cover the changing region. Reopen the monitor’s selective settings, inspect the current page screenshot, and update the ignored area.
- Alerts continue for changes elsewhere: Ignore Elements only suppresses changes within selected regions. Use a threshold, keyword monitoring, or Smart Monitor criteria if the remaining page still produces changes that are irrelevant to your goal.
- Settings or check timing differ from instructions: Feature availability and monitoring frequency depend on the plan. Check the options shown for your account and the current ChangeTower FAQ.
FAQ
Does Ignore Elements block ads from appearing in a browser?
No. It excludes selected page regions from ChangeTower’s change detection. It is not an ad blocker and does not alter what a visitor sees on the site.
Can I ignore several areas on one page?
Select the noisy regions shown in the setup screenshot, save, and review the highlighted ignored areas. Use Edit to correct the selection if needed.
Should I use a threshold instead of ignoring a carousel?
Use Ignore Elements when the carousel itself should not count. A word-change threshold filters by the amount of text change across the monitored scope; it does not remove a specific region from detection.
Will ignored regions stay correct after a redesign?
Not necessarily. Review the saved selection whenever the page layout changes, especially if ads or widgets move or resize.
