How to Find All Screenshots on Windows

Find Windows screenshots quickly: check the default folders, Snipping Tool settings, clipboard, File Explorer search, OneDrive and common failure points.

Start here: open File Explorer, select Pictures, then open Screenshots. That is the documented default location for images captured with Windows logo key + PrtScn on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft Support documents this shortcut and its save location.

This folder is not universal. Snipping Tool can use its own automatic-save setting, Print Screen can place an image only on the clipboard, and a manually saved snip can be anywhere you chose. Use the steps below to find every likely copy.

1. Check Pictures > Screenshots first

  1. Press Windows logo key + E to open File Explorer.
  2. In the left pane, select Pictures.
  3. Open Screenshots.
  4. Sort by Date modified to see the newest captures first.

Windows+PrtScn normally saves a PNG file in this folder. On some keyboards without a dedicated Print Screen key, Microsoft documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as the equivalent shortcut.

2. Check how the screenshot was captured

Windows logo key + PrtScn

This shortcut captures the entire display and saves an image automatically in Pictures\Screenshots. If you use multiple monitors, the capture can include the displays according to your Windows display arrangement.

Print Screen may copy the screen to the clipboard instead of creating a file in Screenshots. Open an image editor, paste with Ctrl + V, and use Save As to create a file. A clipboard image will not appear in File Explorer until it has been saved.

Alt + PrtScn

Alt+PrtScn copies the active window to the clipboard. Paste it into Paint, Photos or another editor, then save it to a known folder.

Snipping Tool

Snipping Tool captures a selected rectangle, window or full screen. Microsoft says a captured snip is automatically saved to its Screenshots folder, but the automatic-save behavior and default folder can be changed in Snipping Tool Settings. You can also use Save or Save As and choose another path. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guidance.

3. Inspect Snipping Tool’s save settings

  1. Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
  2. Select the … menu, then Settings.
  3. Review the automatic-save option and the default Screenshots folder setting.
  4. Capture a test snip and note the folder shown when you save it.

If the folder was changed, look in that custom location rather than Pictures\Screenshots. A snip saved with a custom filename may also be outside any Screenshots folder.

4. Search the entire PC with File Explorer

When the expected folder is empty, search from This PC rather than from Pictures. Searching This PC includes indexed locations across your internal drives and connected storage; searching a particular drive or folder narrows the results. Microsoft notes that indexing and configured search locations affect what Windows Search returns.

Useful searches

  • kind:picture — finds image files.
  • *.png — finds PNG screenshots, the usual format for Windows capture shortcuts.
  • *.jpg OR *.jpeg OR *.webp — finds other common image formats.
  • screenshot — finds files whose names include “screenshot”.
  • date:today or a date range in the Search options — limits results to recent captures.

Combine terms when useful, such as kind:picture screenshot. Search a specific USB drive, Downloads folder or project directory if you regularly save captures there.

5. Check OneDrive Photos and local photo folders

If OneDrive backs up Pictures, screenshots may be visible in the OneDrive folder or in the OneDrive Photos experience. Microsoft’s Photos guidance also describes adding a local folder and opening an item in File Explorer. Availability depends on your account, OneDrive setup and Windows version, so treat this as an additional location rather than a guaranteed index of every screenshot.

  • Open OneDrive in File Explorer and check Pictures and any Screenshots folder.
  • Open the Photos app and review OneDrive photos.
  • Check Photos > Settings for added local folders.
  • Use Open in File Explorer on a result to identify its real path.

6. Recover screenshots that were never saved

A capture shown in an editor or Snipping Tool window is not necessarily a file. If you closed the window without saving, Windows may not have a recoverable image in the Screenshots folder. Recreate the capture, paste clipboard content into Paint or another editor, and save it immediately.

Also check the editor’s recent files list, Downloads, Desktop and any project folder where you normally export images.

7. Troubleshooting checklist

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Pictures\Screenshots is empty You used Snipping Tool with a different folder, or the capture only went to the clipboard. Inspect Snipping Tool Settings, then paste the clipboard image and save it.
Nothing happens when pressing PrtScn Your keyboard requires a function modifier or uses a different key layout. Try Fn + PrtScn, Fn + Windows + Space, or open Snipping Tool manually.
Search finds no image You searched inside one folder, the file type is not indexed, or the file has an unexpected extension. Search from This PC, try kind:picture and extensions such as .png, .jpg and .webp, and allow indexing to finish.
The screenshot exists but has an unfamiliar name Snipping Tool or an editor used a custom filename. Sort image results by Date modified and inspect the preview rather than relying on the filename.
Only an old copy appears in OneDrive Sync is paused, the folder is not backed up, or the image is local. Check OneDrive sync status and search the local Pictures, Desktop and Downloads folders.
A window capture is cropped unexpectedly Alt+PrtScn captures only the active window. Use Windows+PrtScn for the full display or Snipping Tool’s full-screen mode.

8. Keep future screenshots easy to find

  • Choose one destination, such as Pictures\Screenshots, for manually saved captures.
  • Keep automatic saving enabled in Snipping Tool if you need a file for every snip.
  • Use descriptive names with a date or project identifier.
  • Do not rely on the clipboard for archival copies; it can be replaced by the next copy operation.
  • If you use OneDrive, confirm that the folder containing screenshots is included in backup and syncing.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need new screenshots of web pages rather than locating images already stored on Windows, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from one request. Its capture flow accepts cookie banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.

FAQ

Where does Windows+Shift+S save screenshots?

That shortcut opens Snipping Tool. Its automatic-save folder follows Snipping Tool’s settings and may differ from Pictures\Screenshots.

Can I find screenshots by date?

Yes. Search from This PC, filter to pictures, then sort by Date modified or use a date filter.

Are screenshots always PNG files?

No. Windows shortcuts commonly create PNG files, but Snipping Tool or an editor can save JPEG, WebP or another format.

Why can’t I find a screenshot after copying it?

Copying places the image on the clipboard. Paste it into an editor and save a file before closing the capture.

Does OneDrive contain every screenshot?

Only if the screenshot’s folder is synced or added to the Photos app. Local-only captures may remain outside OneDrive.
