How to Find Minecraft Screenshots
Find Minecraft screenshots on Java, Bedrock, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, iPhone, Android, and Windows, with recovery steps when folders are empty.
Java screenshots are normally in the .minecraft/screenshots folder. Bedrock, console, and mobile screenshots are usually handled by the platform’s screenshot gallery or photo app.
Use the section for your edition and device. If you are unsure which edition you have, start with the identification guide below.
1. Identify your Minecraft edition and device
Java Edition is the PC edition for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its default screenshot key is F2, and screenshots are saved as PNG files inside the active Java game directory.
Bedrock Edition includes Minecraft for Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iPhone/iPad. Bedrock screenshots may appear in Minecraft’s in-game gallery or in the operating system’s capture library, depending on the device and how the screenshot was taken. Minecraft’s platform documentation lists Java for Windows, macOS, and Linux and Bedrock for Windows and major consoles and mobile platforms (Minecraft platform reference).
| Edition or platform | How to take a screenshot | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Java on Windows | F2 (try Fn + F2) |
%AppData%\\.minecraft\\screenshots |
| Java on macOS | F2 |
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/screenshots |
| Java on Linux | F2 |
~/.minecraft/screenshots |
| Bedrock on Windows | Pause-menu camera or Windows capture tool | In-game gallery; local folder varies |
| Xbox | Xbox capture control | Capture interface and Recent captures |
| PS4 | SHARE or Save Screenshot |
Capture Gallery |
| PS5 | Create > Take Screenshot | Recently created or Media Gallery |
| Nintendo Switch | Capture Button | HOME Menu > Album |
| iPhone or iPad | Device screenshot shortcut | Photos > Collections > Media Types > Screenshots |
| Android | Device-specific screenshot control | Gallery or Google Photos > Screenshots |
2. Find Java Edition screenshots
Windows
- Press
Windows key + R. - Enter
%appdata%\\.minecraft\\screenshots. - Press Enter.
- Sort by Date modified to find the newest PNG.
This is the standard Java location. Mojang documents the F2 shortcut and screenshot storage in the .minecraft folder in its Java Edition hotkey guide.
macOS
- Open Finder.
- Choose Go > Go to Folder.
- Enter
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/screenshots. - Press Enter and open or copy the PNG files.
The Library folder is hidden during normal browsing, so Go to Folder is the quickest method.
Linux
- Open your file manager.
- Show hidden files, commonly with
Ctrl + H. - Open
~/.minecraft/screenshots. - Sort by date and open the newest PNG.
Take a new Java screenshot
- Enter a world or server.
- Press
F2. - Wait for Minecraft’s screenshot confirmation.
- Open the corresponding
screenshotsfolder.
For a clean scene, press F1 to hide the HUD, press F2, then press F1 again. On laptops whose function keys control media, use Fn + F2.
Custom launchers, modpacks, and instances
The default path is not guaranteed when you use Prism Launcher, Modrinth App, CurseForge, MultiMC-derived launchers, portable installations, or a custom profile. Open the active installation’s game directory and look for its own screenshots subfolder. Do not assume every instance writes to the global .minecraft directory.
3. Find Bedrock Edition screenshots on Windows
Bedrock is different from Java. Do not use the Java .minecraft path as a universal Bedrock location.
Start with Minecraft’s gallery
- Open Minecraft Bedrock.
- Enter a world.
- Open the pause menu.
- Choose the camera or screenshot control.
- Open the profile or screenshot-gallery area to view the image.
The Bedrock menu documentation describes an in-game screenshot gallery and a Screenshots location in the Bedrock com.mojang data area (Bedrock menu reference).
Find a local Windows file
Windows Bedrock storage has changed between installations and versions. Some current installations use a path resembling:
%AppData%\\Minecraft Bedrock\\Users\\<numbered-user-folder>\\games\\com.mojang\\Screenshots
Treat that as an installation-dependent example, not a guaranteed path. If it is missing:
- Search the active Bedrock data directory for a folder named
Screenshots. - Take a test screenshot, then search for PNG files sorted by modification time.
- Use the gallery’s share or export control when available.
- If you used Windows Game Bar, check Windows’ capture library instead of Minecraft’s gallery.
Older instructions that point to a single Microsoft Store package directory may not match your current installation.
4. Find screenshots on Xbox
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open the capture and broadcast area.
- Choose Recent captures.
- Select the Minecraft screenshot to view, share, or manage it.
Xbox captures are managed by the console capture system, not a Java .minecraft folder. Menu names can vary by console generation and system software. See Microsoft’s Xbox capture instructions.
5. Find screenshots on PlayStation
PS4
Hold SHARE, or press SHARE and choose Save Screenshot. Open Capture Gallery from the content area, select the image, and use OPTIONS to manage or copy it to USB storage. Sony documents these steps in its PS4 capture guide.
PS5
Press the DualSense Create button and choose Take Screenshot. Open the Recently created card from Control Center or open Media Gallery from the home screen. See the PS5 capture guide.
PlayStation App access depends on supported regions, console linking, app configuration, and capture-upload settings. It is not guaranteed for every PS5 setup (PS5 game captures in the app).
6. Find screenshots on Nintendo Switch
- Press the Capture Button on the left Joy-Con, Switch Lite, or compatible Pro Controller.
- Return to the HOME Menu.
- Open Album.
- Select the Minecraft screenshot.
Nintendo documents the Capture Button and Album workflow for Switch models in its screenshot support article.
7. Find screenshots on iPhone and iPad
On iPhone models with Face ID, press the side button and Volume Up together. Models with a Home button use the corresponding side or top button and Home button combination.
- Open Photos.
- Open Collections.
- Choose Media Types.
- Open Screenshots.
Apple’s screenshot instructions cover the device shortcuts and Photos album.
8. Find screenshots on Android
Android controls vary by manufacturer and model. Use the phone’s normal screenshot gesture or hardware-button shortcut, then open Gallery, Photos, or the device photo app. Look for Screenshots or Pictures/Screenshots.
A Minecraft Bedrock gallery, when available, is separate from screenshots made with the phone’s system controls.
9. Troubleshoot missing screenshots
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
F2 does nothing |
You are using Bedrock, a console, or mobile; the laptop requires Fn; another program intercepted the key. |
Confirm the edition, try Fn + F2, then use the platform capture control. |
| Java folder is empty | Wrong game directory, custom instance, failed capture, or a file filter. | Take a test screenshot, sort by date, and inspect the active launcher instance directory. |
| Bedrock gallery has an image but no obvious file | Gallery storage and local Windows storage are not exposed identically. | Use gallery sharing, search for a recently modified Screenshots folder, or use Windows capture. |
You searched .minecraft on a console |
That is primarily a Java PC directory. | Open the console’s capture library. |
| HUD or hand appears in the image | The interface was visible during capture. | On Java, press F1 before F2. |
| Screenshot is not on your other device | The image remains in the local folder or platform library. | Copy the PNG, use console sharing or USB export, or share from Photos/Gallery. |
Use a controlled test
- Take one new screenshot now.
- Note the exact time.
- Search the relevant gallery or directory for files modified at that time.
- If no file appears, verify that the screenshot action completed and that you are checking the same edition and profile used to play.
10. Copy or share the image
- Java PC: Copy the PNG from the
screenshotsfolder to another folder, cloud drive, or message. - Windows Bedrock: Use the gallery export/share control or copy the discovered local file.
- Xbox and PlayStation: Use the console sharing tools, supported mobile app features, or USB export.
- Switch: Use Album’s sharing or transfer options.
- iPhone and Android: Share directly from Photos or Gallery, or connect the device to a computer.
11. Or skip the browser setup
If you need a clean image of a Minecraft web page, map page, server dashboard, or documentation page rather than a live in-game capture, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Read the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

FAQ
Are Minecraft screenshots always PNG files?
Standard Java F2 screenshots are normally PNG files. Console and mobile capture formats depend on the platform.
Can I use the Java screenshot folder for Bedrock?
No. Java and Bedrock use different storage systems. Bedrock Windows locations vary, and consoles and phones use their own capture libraries.
Why can I see a Bedrock screenshot in Minecraft but not in File Explorer?
The in-game gallery does not always map to an obvious, stable Windows folder. Use its share or export feature, or search the active Bedrock data directory after taking a test screenshot.
Does pressing F2 work on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, or mobile?
No. F2 is the default Java control. Use the capture control provided by the device.
