Firefox Screenshots Not Working: Fix the Missing Button
The Firefox Screenshots toolbar button is optional. Use the context menu or shortcut, then restore the button or troubleshoot settings and managed-device policies.
If Firefox Screenshots is not working because its toolbar button is missing, try the page context menu or keyboard shortcut first. The button is optional: Firefox can still take screenshots without it. To put the button back, open the application menu, choose More Tools > Customize Toolbar, and drag Screenshot from the palette to the toolbar if it is available.
On Windows and Linux, press Ctrl+Shift+S. On macOS, press Command+Shift+S. Or right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot. Mozilla documents these access routes in its Firefox Screenshots instructions.
1. Check whether the screenshot feature still works
- Open a regular webpage in Firefox.
- Right-click an empty area of the page and select Take Screenshot, if shown.
- If that option is unavailable, try the shortcut for your operating system: Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows/Linux or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Use the screenshot controls to capture the visible area or the full page. Firefox can copy the image or save it.
If either route opens the screenshot tool, the capture feature is available; the missing toolbar icon is a customization issue. These three routes have different tradeoffs:
| Route | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Page context menu | Finding the command without changing the toolbar | Open the menu over the webpage. |
| Keyboard shortcut | Quick access | Use the key combination for your operating system. |
| Toolbar button | Persistent, visible access | Add it through toolbar customization; it may also be in the overflow area. |
2. Add the Screenshot button to the toolbar
- Open the Firefox application menu.
- Choose More Tools, then Customize Toolbar.
- Look in the customization palette for Screenshot.
- Drag it to the toolbar or the overflow area, then finish customization.
- Check the overflow menu if the icon is not visible beside the address bar.
Mozilla’s current support instructions describe adding a Screenshots shortcut from toolbar customization. If Screenshot is missing from the palette too, a Mozilla Support forum reply suggests using Restore Defaults in the customization view, then checking the palette again. Treat this as community troubleshooting guidance; it may not apply to every Firefox version or customized layout.
3. Why older instructions point to the wrong place
Firefox Screenshots was removed from the URL bar’s Page Actions menu in Firefox 88. Mozilla’s release notes described adding a Screenshots shortcut through the Customize menu instead. The feature was not thereby removed from Firefox; instructions that say to look for it in the URL bar may simply describe the old location. See the Firefox 88 release notes.
4. Troubleshoot when the command is missing everywhere
Check whether the browser is managed
On a work, school, or otherwise managed device, an administrator may control browser features. Enter about:policies in the address bar and review the active policies. If the browser is managed, ask its administrator whether screenshots are disabled before changing settings.
Review screenshot preferences carefully
Mozilla Support forum troubleshooting mentions the preferences extensions.screenshots.disabled and screenshots.browser.component.enabled as possible leads. These suggestions are version-sensitive community guidance, not a universal fix in maintained help documentation.
If you inspect about:config, search only for those screenshot-related preferences and note their original values before changing anything. Do not change unrelated preferences. If the preferences are absent, their meaning is unclear, or the device is managed, stop and consult Mozilla Support or the administrator rather than guessing.
Use Troubleshoot Mode to isolate add-ons and appearance changes
If the command appears but does nothing, or remains unavailable after checking customization and policy, try Firefox Troubleshoot Mode as a diagnostic step. If screenshots work in that mode, an extension, theme, or custom browser styling may be involved. Mozilla Support forum guidance also mentions checking custom userChrome.css or userContent.css. Troubleshoot Mode can help narrow the cause, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
Record the symptoms before escalating
There is no single documented fix for every Firefox version, operating system, profile, and managed-device configuration. If the command is still unavailable, record:
- Your Firefox version and operating system.
- Whether the context-menu command works.
- Whether the keyboard shortcut works.
- Whether Screenshot appears in the customization palette or overflow area.
- Whether the device is managed and whether Troubleshoot Mode changes the behavior.
These details help Mozilla Support distinguish a missing toolbar item from a disabled feature or a profile-specific problem.
5. Or skip the browser setup
If you need a website screenshot as a file or API result rather than a capture from your Firefox window, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request takes a URL and returns a screenshot. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
const image = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', image));
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

6. Frequently asked questions
Did Mozilla remove Firefox Screenshots?
Firefox 88 removed the command from the URL bar’s Page Actions menu. Mozilla’s documented context-menu, shortcut, and toolbar-customization routes provide other ways to access it.
Can I take a full-page screenshot without the toolbar button?
Yes. Open Firefox Screenshots from the context menu or keyboard shortcut, then choose the full-page capture option.
Why is Screenshot absent from Customize Toolbar?
Possible leads include a customized toolbar layout, a disabled screenshot feature, or a browser policy. The preference and policy suggestions are version-sensitive forum guidance, so check your Firefox version and consult an administrator for managed devices.
Does Troubleshoot Mode permanently change my extensions or theme?
Use it as a diagnostic test to see whether extensions, themes, or custom styling may be involved. If behavior changes, investigate those customizations; the test alone does not identify a specific cause.
