How to Fix Black Screenshots on Android
Find out why Android screenshots turn black, distinguish app protection from HDR issues, and follow fixes that match your device and app.
First, take a screenshot of your home screen or a basic Settings page. If that capture is normal but one banking, password-manager, streaming or other sensitive app produces a black image, the app may intentionally protect its window with Android’s FLAG_SECURE. Android documents that the resulting screenshot can be blank. If every screen is black, check the normal capture method, storage, device software and manufacturer-specific support. If the image contains content but is much darker or has shifted colors, investigate HDR tone mapping instead of treating it as a blocked screenshot.
There is no universal Android setting that overrides an app’s secure-window restriction. Use the app’s own export, share, statement or support features when you legitimately need the information.
1. Identify which kind of black screenshot you have
| Symptom | Most likely branch | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Only one app or screen is black; home screen works | App-level protection such as FLAG_SECURE |
Use the app’s export/share/support path |
| Home screen, Settings and every app are black | Capture method, device software or manufacturer issue | Repeat the standard button sequence and contact the manufacturer if it still fails |
| Screenshot shows the scene but looks darker or color-shifted | HDR screenshot tone mapping | Compare an SDR screen and review HDR behavior on your Android version |
| Only a protected video or payment screen is blank | Intentional content protection | Do not expect a global switch to remove it |
Android’s secure-activity guidance uses banking and password-manager screens as examples of content that may need protection. Android Developers explains FLAG_SECURE and blank screenshot behavior.
2. Try the standard Android screenshot controls
- Open the screen you want to capture.
- Press Power and Volume Down at the same time, then release.
- If that does not work, hold the Power button for a few seconds and tap Screenshot when the option appears. Button behavior varies by manufacturer.
- Open Google Photos or your phone’s Gallery app and look for the Screenshots folder.
These are Google’s documented capture steps. If neither method works, Google recommends using your phone manufacturer’s support site.
Optional ADB capture for a device you own
ADB can help determine whether the phone can render and save an ordinary screen outside the hardware-button path. Enable USB debugging only on a device you control, connect it to a computer, accept the debugging prompt, and run:
adb devices
adb shell screencap -p /sdcard/check.png
adb pull /sdcard/check.png ./check.png
This does not bypass FLAG_SECURE. Android’s screenshot-detection API documentation also notes that detection coverage differs by capture method and does not provide an image to the app.
3. When one app is black: understand FLAG_SECURE
An Android app can set the FLAG_SECURE window flag to keep activity content out of screenshots and other non-secure displays. When the screenshot is taken, the resulting image can be blank. This is a privacy and fraud-prevention feature, not proof that your display, camera or screenshot storage is broken.
// App-side example (Kotlin)
window.setFlags(
WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_SECURE,
WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_SECURE
)
Only the app developer controls this flag for that window. Android’s official documentation does not describe a consumer setting that globally overrides it. Do not rely on third-party “unlock screenshot” utilities to make protected data capturable; they cannot change the app’s security policy through supported Android APIs.
Legitimate alternatives for protected information
- Use an in-app export, download, receipt or statement function.
- Use the app’s share action if it exposes the specific record safely.
- Ask the service’s support team for an accessible copy.
- For development, change the flag in your own debug build or test activity, then remove that change before release.
4. When every screenshot is black
- Restart the phone and retry the Power plus Volume Down sequence.
- Try the Power-menu Screenshot option.
- Test both the home screen and a basic Settings page.
- Check whether storage is full and whether Gallery or Photos has permission to access media.
- Install pending system updates, then retry.
- Test in Safe Mode if your manufacturer provides it; a recently installed overlay or accessibility utility can interfere with capture.
- Record the phone model, Android version, affected capture method and whether ADB also fails.
- Contact the manufacturer’s support site with those details if ordinary screens remain black.
Google’s consumer guidance sends users to the device maker when the normal controls fail because button behavior and software features differ across phones.
5. When the image is dark instead of blank: HDR
A screenshot can contain the correct scene yet look darker than the phone’s display. AOSP documents that HDR screenshots use tone mapping that can differ from the display’s tone mapping, including darker screenshot colors on Android 14. This is a rendering difference, not the same symptom as a fully blank secure window.
- Compare an HDR screen with an ordinary SDR Settings screen.
- View the file on another display and in another image viewer.
- Check whether the source app offers an SDR, standard-color or export option.
- Do not infer that HDR is the cause when the entire image is a uniform black rectangle.
See the AOSP HDR screenshot documentation for the platform behavior.
6. Android 14 screenshot detection is not screenshot blocking
Android 14 added a privacy-preserving screenshot-detection API. A supported app can register a callback for supported screenshot events and notify the user, but the callback does not contain the screenshot image. The API covers a specified hardware-button action and excludes some paths such as ADB and instrumentation tests. Detection alone does not blacken the capture; content protection is provided separately by FLAG_SECURE. Read the Android 14 screenshot-detection documentation when diagnosing an app’s behavior.
7. A developer checklist
- Scope: one app or every screen?
- Appearance: blank black or visible but darker?
- Capture path: hardware buttons, Power menu or ADB?
- Context: sensitive activity, payment flow, password field or protected video?
- Device: manufacturer, model and Android version?
- Evidence: does a home-screen capture work, and where is the file saved?
8. Troubleshooting common errors
| Error or observation | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Only a banking screen is black | The app may set FLAG_SECURE |
Use export/share/support options; there is no documented global override |
| Power plus Volume Down does nothing | Timing, remapped buttons or manufacturer variation | Press simultaneously, try the Power-menu Screenshot option, then consult the manufacturer |
| Screenshot exists but cannot be found | Gallery/Photos location differs | Check the Screenshots album and device storage search |
| All screenshots are black after an update | Device software or overlay problem | Restart, update again if available, test Safe Mode and contact the manufacturer |
| Image is dark but details remain | HDR tone-mapping difference | Compare SDR content and another viewer; do not treat it as secure-window blocking |
| ADB capture is black for a protected app | FLAG_SECURE also protects non-secure displays and capture paths |
Use an app-provided export or a debug build you control |
| Screenshot-detection callback fires | The app detected a supported event | Remember that detection supplies no image and does not itself cause a black result |
9. Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture web pages for documentation, testing or an AI workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is separate from Android’s protected-window rules: it captures public web pages, not content that an Android app intentionally excludes.
One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The API accepts options for full-page capture, device and viewport settings, dark mode, retina scale, CSS selectors, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, request blocking, cookies, headers, user agents, geolocation, caching and more. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the full option list.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are never billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. An MCP server lets Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
10. Performance, reliability and cost notes
- For device troubleshooting, capture a simple SDR screen first; it isolates capture failure from HDR rendering.
- For web capture, use a selector or viewport when a full page is unnecessary, and choose a cache TTL for repeated URLs.
- Use waits for dynamic content and block unnecessary ads, trackers or resource types when they slow loading.
- Inspect
X-Page-VerdictandX-Billedheaders so failed loads, bot checks, blank pages and cache hits are distinguishable from billable clean shots. - Use asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks for long pages or bulk work, and the bulk endpoint for up to 100 URLs per call.
FAQ
Can I turn off black screenshots for one app?
Only the app developer can remove or change its secure-window flag. Use an export or share feature instead.
Does Android 14 screenshot detection save the image?
No. The callback reports a supported screenshot event but does not provide the screenshot data.
Why is my screenshot darker than the display?
HDR tone mapping can produce darker screenshot colors, especially on Android 14. Compare with SDR content and another viewer.
Will ADB bypass a protected screen?
No. A secure window is designed to keep content out of screenshots and non-secure displays.
Who should fix a phone where the home screen is also black?
After trying both standard capture methods and a restart, contact the phone manufacturer’s support channel with the model and Android version.
