How to Fix the Linked Image Cannot Be Displayed Error

Fix Outlook’s “The linked image cannot be displayed” error by identifying blocked external images, registry policy, or the 2026 classic Outlook bug.

“The linked image cannot be displayed” means Outlook failed to load or render an image. The message text or attachment is not necessarily missing. The correct fix depends on whether the image is an external URL, a signature or inline image, and which Outlook issue you have.

Identify which Outlook problem you have

What fails Most likely cause Best first action
Images in newsletters or messages from many senders Picture-download settings or BlockHTTPimages=1 Check Outlook settings and the registry or Group Policy.
A signature or inserted image in classic Outlook after May 12, 2026 updates A documented classic-Outlook rendering bug involving inline cid images Check the message source and update Office/Word to a fixed build.
Only one sender or one image fails Wrong URL, unavailable hosting, expired access, or an image that was never embedded Verify the source URL and ask the sender to resend or repair the image.

Microsoft describes the red X and the prompt to download pictures in its Outlook support documentation.

Quick decision tree

  1. Does the problem affect many external images? Check automatic picture downloads, then investigate BlockHTTPimages.
  2. Does it affect a signature or inserted image in classic Outlook after the May 12, 2026 updates? View the message source and search for cid in a v:imagedata tag. If present, update Office/Word.
  3. Does only one sender or image fail? Test the image URL outside Outlook and have the sender verify that the file still exists and was included in the message.

Fix blocked external images in legacy Outlook

1. Check picture-download settings

Outlook may avoid downloading Internet images until you explicitly allow them. In the message, select Download Pictures. If that immediately displays the images, the issue is an automatic-download privacy setting rather than a missing attachment.

In a managed organization, the setting may be enforced centrally. If Download Pictures does nothing and many messages are affected, continue with the registry and policy checks below.

2. Check the BlockHTTPimages registry value

Microsoft documents a legacy Outlook failure when the DWORD value BlockHTTPimages is set to 1 while the message references an image URL. The value can be in either of these locations:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\x.0\Common
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\policies\Microsoft\Office\x.0\Common

x.0 represents the Office version installed on the computer.

  1. Exit Outlook completely.
  2. Open regedit.exe.
  3. Back up the registry or export the relevant key before changing anything.
  4. Check the two Common locations for a DWORD named BlockHTTPimages.
  5. If your environment confirms that this value is causing the problem, remove the value rather than changing unrelated settings.
  6. Start Outlook and test a message with an external image.

Registry edits can cause serious problems when done incorrectly. If the value is under the policies hive, do not repeatedly delete it: Group Policy may restore it at the next refresh. Ask your administrator to change the policy that creates the value.

Fix the 2026 classic-Outlook rendering bug

Microsoft Support reports that all supported versions of classic Outlook could be affected after the May 12, 2026 updates. The affected messages commonly contain an inline image referenced by a content ID.

Confirm the bug from message source

  1. Open the affected message in classic Outlook.
  2. Choose Move > Actions > Other Actions > View Source.
  3. Search the source for cid inside the src attribute of a v:imagedata tag.
<v:imagedata src=cid:image001.png@01DCE6B1.CF669A40 o:title="" />

If the source has this pattern and the failure began after the listed updates, install an Office/Word build containing Microsoft’s fix. Fixed builds listed by Microsoft include:

Product or channel Fixed build
Microsoft 365 Version 2606 20120.15000 or 20131.20000
Version 2605 20026.20118
Version 2604 19929.20202
Version 2603 19822.20272
Version 2602 19725.20370
Version 2508 19127.20666
Word 2016 5556.1004
Word 2019 10417.20145
Word 2021 14334.20714
Word 2024 17932.20814

Check Microsoft 365 update history for the availability of a build on your update channel. Once the fix is installed, original messages should render correctly. A reply or forward can still permanently lack the image if the inline content was not included in that new message.

When only one image or sender fails

A client-side setting is unlikely to fix a single broken image. Check the sender’s HTML and hosting:

  • Open the image URL in a browser. A 404, redirect loop, authorization prompt, or expired signed URL means the sender must repair the source.
  • Confirm that the URL is complete and uses a reachable scheme such as https://.
  • Ask whether the image was embedded in the message. A signature can appear on the sender’s computer but be omitted from a reply or forward.
  • Have the sender resend the message after repairing the image or attach the image directly.

Troubleshooting checklist

Symptom Cause to check Fix
Red X and “Download Pictures” appears Automatic external-image blocking Download pictures for a trusted message and review organizational settings.
Download Pictures still shows the linked-image error for many messages BlockHTTPimages=1 Check the documented registry locations; involve IT if the value is policy-managed.
Signature images broke after a 2026 update Inline cid/v:imagedata rendering bug Install a fixed Office/Word build.
Only replies or forwards lose the image Inline content was not copied into the new message Insert the image again or send a new message with the image embedded.
Only one URL fails Sender-side hosting or URL problem Test the URL externally and ask the sender to correct it.
The registry value returns after deletion Group Policy refresh Ask the administrator to change the policy instead of editing the value locally.

Reliability and prevention

  • For organization-wide failures, record the Outlook version, update channel, message type and whether the image is external or inline before changing policy.
  • For signatures, keep a local copy of the source image and reinsert it after an Office repair or update.
  • Do not assume that a successful preview on the sender’s computer proves the image is embedded in the outgoing message.
  • When privacy policy permits external images, allow downloads only for trusted senders and domains.

FAQ

Is the email itself missing?

Usually no. The error indicates that Outlook could not load or render the image resource.

Should I delete BlockHTTPimages on every computer?

No. Confirm that it is the cause first. If it is under the Policies hive, ask your administrator to change Group Policy.

Will updating Office restore images in old replies?

Original messages should be fixed after the update. A reply or forward may still lack an image that was not included in that message.

Why does the image work in a browser but not Outlook?

Outlook can block external downloads, apply enterprise policy, or fail to render an inline content-ID image even when the URL itself works.
