How to Fix Missing Thumbnails for Files in Windows

Restore missing Windows thumbnails with the right view, OneDrive checks, cache cleanup, policy guidance, and Preview pane troubleshooting.

When Windows shows generic icons instead of image previews, start with the folder layout and thumbnail setting. In File Explorer, choose Medium, Large, or Extra large icons, then open Folder Options → View and clear Always show icons, never thumbnails. That checkbox path is documented in Microsoft Community guidance; Microsoft’s File Explorer documentation confirms that view layouts control whether items appear as thumbnails or standard file-type icons. (Microsoft File Explorer; Microsoft Community guidance)

1. Check the folder view and thumbnail setting

  1. Open the affected folder in File Explorer.
  2. Select View, then choose Medium icons, Large icons, or Extra large icons. List, Details, and Small icons views do not provide a useful thumbnail tile.
  3. Open the three-dot menu, choose Options, and open the View tab.
  4. Make sure Always show icons, never thumbnails is not selected.
  5. Select Apply, then OK. Reopen the folder if the display does not refresh immediately.

Microsoft describes File Explorer layouts as the control for how files appear, including thumbnail-style views and ordinary icons. (Microsoft accessibility documentation)

2. Identify the scope before changing anything else

Symptom Most useful next check
No thumbnails in local folders Verify the icon layout and thumbnail checkbox, then rebuild the cache.
Only OneDrive files are affected Use Medium icons or larger and make the files available on this device.
Only PDFs or very large OneDrive images fail Check OneDrive’s documented preview limits.
Only a work share or network folder fails Ask an administrator to review thumbnail policy.
Only the side Preview pane fails for downloads Check the post-October 2025 security behavior; this is separate from thumbnails.

3. Fix OneDrive thumbnails

For OneDrive folders, set the folder to Medium-sized icons or larger. If a local preview still does not appear, right-click the file or folder and choose Always keep on this device. OneDrive Files On-Demand can leave an item online-only; a blue cloud status means it is not stored locally until opened or downloaded. (Microsoft: Fix missing thumbnails in OneDrive; Microsoft: Files On-Demand)

OneDrive documents two preview limits: thumbnails are unavailable for PDFs and for images larger than 100 MB. Those are service limits, not evidence that your Windows thumbnail cache is damaged. (Microsoft OneDrive support)

4. Rebuild the Windows thumbnail cache

If local folders still show icons after the view check, clear the cache with Disk Cleanup:

  1. Open Start and search for Disk Cleanup.
  2. Choose the Windows drive, usually C:.
  3. In the files-to-delete list, select Thumbnails.
  4. Review the selected categories, then confirm cleanup.
  5. Reopen File Explorer. Windows rebuilds thumbnail data as it encounters files again.

Microsoft lists Thumbnails as a Disk Cleanup category and advises reviewing the selected categories before deletion. Clearing the cache is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed repair for every file type or thumbnail handler. (Microsoft: Free up drive space)

5. Check network-folder and managed-device policy

If thumbnails work in local folders but not on a network share, the cause may be policy. Microsoft’s thumbnail policy reference documents configurations that make File Explorer display icons only on network folders and controls for thumbnail caching in hidden thumbs.db files. Contact your organization’s administrator to inspect the applicable policy instead of applying random registry edits. (Microsoft Learn: ADMX_Thumbnails Policy CSP)

6. Do not confuse thumbnails with the Preview pane

A thumbnail is the small image in a folder listing. The Preview pane is a separate, larger preview displayed beside the listing. Starting with security updates released on or after October 14, 2025, File Explorer automatically disables the Preview pane for files downloaded from the internet on the Windows versions covered by Microsoft’s advisory. Microsoft says this change addresses a vulnerability involving HTML references to external paths and NTLM-hash exposure. Do not disable that security behavior as a routine thumbnail fix. (Microsoft Support, published October 22, 2025)

7. Troubleshooting checklist

Every local folder shows icons

  • Use Medium icons or larger.
  • Clear Always show icons, never thumbnails.
  • Run Disk Cleanup and select Thumbnails.
  • Close and reopen File Explorer; restart Windows if the shell does not refresh.

Only some file types fail

The supplied Microsoft sources do not establish a universal cause for format-specific failures or third-party thumbnail handlers. Record the Windows version and build, affected extensions, and whether the files are local, OneDrive, or on a network share before seeking a format-specific handler or administrator fix.

OneDrive files have cloud icons

Use Always keep on this device, then wait for the file to download and return to a thumbnail-friendly view.

Large images or PDFs in OneDrive have no preview

Check the documented OneDrive limits: previews are unavailable for PDFs and images over 100 MB. Changing the cache will not remove that service constraint.

Work-share thumbnails are blocked

Ask the administrator to review thumbnail and thumbnail-cache policies for network folders. Avoid registry changes that conflict with company policy.

The Preview pane is blank for a downloaded file

Check whether the October 2025 security behavior applies. This symptom concerns the Preview pane, not the thumbnail tile, and should not be “fixed” by weakening the security setting.

8. Performance, reliability, and storage notes

  • Thumbnail generation is cached, so the first view after cleanup can take longer while previews are recreated.
  • Keeping OneDrive files on the device improves local availability but uses disk space.
  • Network shares add dependence on connectivity and administrator policy; test the same file in a local folder to separate those causes.
  • Disk Cleanup removes cached previews and may temporarily increase CPU or disk activity as Windows rebuilds them.
  • There is no documented universal repair for every image format, codec, or third-party shell extension in the supplied sources.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to generate image previews for a website or asset pipeline rather than repair Windows Explorer, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the full option list, including full-page or CSS-selector captures, device presets, dark mode, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, request blocking, headers and cookies, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture, and PDF settings.

FAQ

Why do I see icons instead of pictures?

The folder may use a small-icon layout, or “Always show icons, never thumbnails” may be enabled. Check both first.

Will clearing the cache always fix thumbnails?

No. It removes cached previews so Windows can rebuild them, but format handlers, OneDrive limits, and policy can still prevent previews.

Are OneDrive thumbnails available for every file?

No. Microsoft documents no previews for PDFs or images larger than 100 MB.

Is the Preview pane the same as a thumbnail?

No. They are separate File Explorer features with separate causes and security behavior.
