How to Fix Print Preview When Images Aren’t Showing
Missing images in print preview? Identify the image type, enable the right setting, and isolate page, browser, PDF, and printer causes.
Start by identifying what is missing. A webpage background, an embedded image, and an image inside a PDF follow different troubleshooting paths. In Microsoft Edge, the More settings → Background graphics checkbox controls webpage backgrounds specifically; it does not guarantee that ordinary embedded images or PDF content will appear.
1. Identify the missing image
- Webpage background: a color, texture, hero background, or CSS background image.
- Embedded webpage image: an
<img>or other content image in the page. - PDF content: an image already inside a PDF opened in the browser or a PDF extension.
Also note where the failure occurs:
| What you observe | Most useful next step |
|---|---|
| Only one page is affected | Test another page with the same print settings. |
| Every page is affected in one browser | Compare another browser and apply its browser-specific reset. |
| Preview is blank or says it failed | Check the selected printer, retry, and restart the browser. |
| Only a PDF extension workflow fails | Check that extension’s PDF-opening settings. |
2. Fix missing webpage backgrounds in Edge
- Open the page in Microsoft Edge.
- Press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS.
- Open More settings.
- Enable Background graphics.
- Review the preview again, then print or save as PDF.
Microsoft documents this option for including webpage backgrounds in print output. Use it when the missing content is a background; it is not a universal fix for every image problem. Microsoft’s Edge printing guide describes the setting and its location.
3. Test another page or document
- Keep the printer, paper, margins, and other settings unchanged.
- Print a different website or online document.
- Compare its preview and output with the original.
If the second page works, concentrate on the original page. Microsoft notes that damaged graphics, fonts, or code can cause a print issue. For an eligible page, you can also compare its Immersive Reader version to see whether removing page styling changes the result. Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting guide recommends testing another page or document.
4. Compare browsers and printers
- Open the same URL in another browser.
- Open print preview and check whether the images appear.
- If possible, try another printer while keeping the browser and page the same.
These comparisons isolate the fault:
- Works in another browser: investigate the original browser’s saved print settings or preview path.
- Fails in every browser: the page, printer, or printer driver is more likely involved.
- Works on another printer: check the original printer or its driver.
Mozilla recommends comparing browsers and, when available, printers for this type of isolation. See Mozilla’s Firefox printing troubleshooting steps.
5. Reset Firefox’s saved print settings
If the page prints correctly elsewhere but Firefox alone omits images or renders the preview incorrectly, clear Firefox’s saved print settings:
- Open the Firefox menu.
- Choose Help → More Troubleshooting Information.
- Scroll to the Printing section.
- Select Clear saved print settings.
- Reload the page and open print preview again.
This resets modified print preferences; it does not repair a broken page or printer. Mozilla documents the reset in its printing guide.
6. Resolve an Edge “Print preview failed” error
A preview failure is different from images being hidden by a setting. Follow Microsoft’s documented sequence:
- Cancel the print dialog.
- Open print again and retry.
- Confirm that the selected printer is installed and available; try another listed printer if appropriate.
- If it still fails, close Edge completely, start a new Edge session, reopen the page, and try again.
These steps address preview failure itself. They do not prove that a page’s images are valid. Read Microsoft’s full Edge troubleshooting article.
7. If the source is a PDF or PDF extension
Use this branch only when the missing image is inside a PDF or the print command comes from a PDF browser extension. Browser PDF-opening preferences can affect extension printing. Check the extension’s instructions and the browser’s PDF handling settings before changing ordinary webpage print settings. Adobe documents this extension-specific scenario.
8. Troubleshooting checklist
| Symptom | Cause to investigate | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Background color or hero image is absent in Edge | Background graphics disabled | Enable More settings → Background graphics. |
| One site omits images | Page-specific graphics, fonts, or code | Test another page; compare the same page in another browser. |
| Firefox alone behaves incorrectly | Saved print preferences | Clear saved print settings from about:support. |
| Preview says “Print preview failed” | Printer selection, transient browser state, or browser issue | Retry, check the printer, then restart Edge. |
| All browsers and printers fail | Page content or printer/driver path | Contact the site owner for a page issue or check the printer and driver. |
| Only an Acrobat/PDF extension fails | Extension or browser PDF-opening setting | Follow the extension-specific PDF guidance. |
9. Preview, print, and save-as-PDF checks
- Check the preview before changing several settings at once.
- Keep a known-working page available as a control.
- Record whether the failure is preview-only or also appears on paper and in a saved PDF.
- When reporting the issue, include the URL, browser, operating system, selected printer, exact error, and steps that reproduce it.
Changing paper size, margins, scale, or orientation can change layout, but those controls do not replace the Edge background setting when a webpage background is missing.
10. Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a clean image or PDF of a URL rather than troubleshooting a local print dialog, ScreenshotNeo provides a single HTTP request. The API accepts PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output and can capture full pages, lazy-loaded images, or one element by CSS selector.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers identify the page verdict and whether the shot was billed. It also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
For repeated captures, choose a cache TTL, use custom wait conditions, block unwanted requests or resource types, set headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, or geolocation, and use async jobs, signed webhooks, bulk capture, or signed links as needed. These controls help make output repeatable when a page loads slowly or changes by region.
Free includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
FAQ
Why do background images disappear while normal images remain?
Browsers treat CSS backgrounds as a separate print category. In Edge, Background graphics controls that category specifically.
Should I change printer drivers first?
Only after comparing another page, browser, or printer. Those tests show whether the problem follows the printer path.
Will clearing Firefox settings fix a broken webpage?
No. It resets Firefox’s saved print preferences. A page-specific failure still requires testing the page in another browser or document.
Does a preview failure mean the images are damaged?
No. “Print preview failed” can involve printer selection or browser state. Retry and restart Edge before diagnosing page graphics.
Can ScreenshotNeo capture a PDF instead of an image?
Yes. Its API supports PDF output and the capture_pdf MCP tool.
