How to Fix the Print Screen Key Not Taking Screenshots

Print Screen may copy images to the clipboard instead of saving files. Follow these Windows checks to capture, save, and troubleshoot it.

If the Print Screen key seems broken, first check whether it copied an image to the clipboard. Press PrtSc, open Paint, and press Ctrl+V. Microsoft documents that Print Screen captures the entire screen and copies it to the clipboard; it does not always create a file automatically. Microsoft’s Print Screen documentation explains this behavior.

If the image pastes successfully, your key works. Save the pasted image from Paint, or use Windows+PrtScn to save a file directly. If nothing pastes, continue through the checks below.

1. Test the clipboard first

Use this quick test:

  1. Press PrtSc once.
  2. Open Paint, Word, or another application that accepts images.
  3. Press Ctrl+V.
  4. If an image appears, use the application’s Save command to create a PNG or another image file.

Clipboard history is optional. Press Windows+V to inspect it; Windows may ask you to enable history first. Ordinary copy and paste still works without clipboard history. See Microsoft’s clipboard guide.

2. Check what the Print Screen setting does

Windows can assign the key to open the Snipping Tool instead of performing the traditional full-screen clipboard capture.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Accessibility > Keyboard.
  3. Find Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping.
  4. Turn it on if you want the key to open the snipping overlay, or turn it off if you want the traditional Print Screen behavior.
  5. Try the key again.

The setting and related shortcuts are documented in Microsoft’s Windows keyboard-shortcut reference.

3. Use Windows+Shift+S as an immediate workaround

Press Windows+Shift+S to open the Snipping Tool overlay. Select rectangular, free-form, window, or full-screen capture when those modes are shown. The result is copied to the clipboard and can be opened from the notification for editing and saving. Microsoft describes this workflow in Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots.

To verify it worked, open Paint and press Ctrl+V. If the paste works but PrtSc does not, the problem is specific to the key, its setting, or the keyboard layout.

4. Try the shortcut that matches your keyboard

Method Result Where to find it
PrtSc Copies the full screen to the clipboard. Paste with Ctrl+V.
Alt+PrtSc Copies the active window to the clipboard. Paste with Ctrl+V.
Windows+Shift+S Opens screen selection in Snipping Tool. Use the notification or paste the result.
Windows+PrtScn Saves a screenshot directly on supported hardware. Pictures > Screenshots.
Fn+Windows+Space Microsoft-documented alternative on devices without a PrtScn button. Hardware support varies.

Compact keyboards and laptops may print PrtSc on a secondary key layer. Hold Fn while pressing the key, and check whether Fn Lock changes the result. The exact combination depends on the device; do not assume one Fn shortcut works on every keyboard. See Microsoft’s Print Screen shortcut documentation.

5. Find screenshots saved by Windows+PrtScn

When Windows+PrtScn is supported, open File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots. If your Pictures folder is included in OneDrive backup, the folder may also appear in OneDrive. Microsoft says the separate “Save screenshots to OneDrive” switch is no longer available; screenshot backup depends on backing up the Pictures folder. See Microsoft’s OneDrive screenshot guidance.

6. Troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Nothing appears on the desktop PrtSc copied to the clipboard instead of saving a file. Paste into Paint with Ctrl+V, then save, or use Windows+PrtScn.
Windows+Shift+S works, but PrtSc does not Print Screen setting, Fn layer, remapping, or a faulty key. Check Accessibility > Keyboard, try Fn, and inspect keyboard software.
PrtSc opens a selection overlay “Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping” is enabled. Keep it enabled for Snipping Tool, or disable it for traditional clipboard behavior.
Windows+PrtScn gives no visible result The screenshot may be saved silently, or the hardware may not support that shortcut. Check Pictures > Screenshots, then try Windows+Shift+S.
The keyboard has no PrtSc label The function is on a secondary key or unavailable. Inspect the key legends and device instructions; try Fn+Windows+Space where supported.
Paste is disabled or blank The target application may not accept bitmap data, or the capture did not reach the clipboard. Try Paint, then compare with Windows+Shift+S.
Only one application window is needed PrtSc captures the whole screen. Focus the window and press Alt+PrtSc, then paste.

7. When to inspect hardware or software

Escalate only after Windows+Shift+S works, another capture method pastes correctly, and the Print Screen setting matches your intended behavior. Then check:

  • Fn Lock or a compact keyboard layer.
  • Keyboard remapping tools and manufacturer utilities.
  • The physical key for damage or intermittent presses.
  • The exact computer model, keyboard model, and Windows version before applying device-specific instructions.

There is no single Microsoft-documented driver or registry repair that fixes every Print Screen failure. If the built-in key is physically defective or absent, a compatible external keyboard can be a last resort; confirm its layout and Windows compatibility first.

8. A reliable capture workflow

  1. Use PrtSc and paste into Paint to test clipboard capture.
  2. Use Windows+Shift+S when you need a selected region or quick editing.
  3. Use Windows+PrtScn when you need an automatically saved full-screen file.
  4. Check Pictures > Screenshots after saved captures.
  5. Use the device’s Fn layer only when its keyboard supports it.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need screenshots of websites rather than your local Windows desktop, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.

FAQ

Does PrtSc automatically save a PNG?

Usually, plain PrtSc copies the image to the clipboard. Paste it into an image application and save it, or use Windows+PrtScn on supported hardware for the saved-file workflow.

Why does Windows+Shift+S work when PrtSc does not?

They use different shortcut paths. Windows+Shift+S opens Snipping Tool, while PrtSc may be affected by the Print Screen setting, an Fn layer, remapping software, or a faulty key.

Where are Windows screenshots stored?

For Windows+PrtScn captures, check Pictures > Screenshots. OneDrive may also contain the folder when Pictures backup is enabled.

Can I capture only the active window?

Yes. Focus the window, press Alt+PrtSc, and paste the result into Paint or another image-capable application.

What if my keyboard has no Print Screen key?

Use Windows+Shift+S, or try Fn+Windows+Space if your device supports Microsoft’s documented alternative. Keyboard layouts differ.
