How to Fix Screen Capture Not Working on Windows 11
Fix Windows 11 screenshots and recordings with a step-by-step checklist for Snipping Tool, Xbox Game Bar, drivers, apps, and system recovery.
When screen capture fails on Windows 11, first identify which capture path is broken: Snipping Tool handles screenshots and rectangular video snips, while Xbox Game Bar records an app or game. Then update the app, repair or reset it, check for graphics-driver symptoms, and use Windows recovery only if the failure is system-wide.
1. Identify what is failing
| Need | Tool | Shortcut | Default output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rectangular or freeform screenshot | Snipping Tool | Win+Shift+S |
Copied to Snipping Tool; save or share it |
| Rectangular video snip | Snipping Tool | Win+Shift+R |
Save from the Snipping Tool window |
| App or game recording | Xbox Game Bar | Win+G, then Win+Alt+R |
Videos\\Captures as MP4 |
| App or game screenshot | Xbox Game Bar | Win+Alt+Print Screen |
Videos\\Captures as PNG |
A shortcut failure does not prove that the feature is missing. The shortcut may be disabled, intercepted by another application, or attached to a different capture tool.
2. Test Snipping Tool directly
- Press
Win+Shift+S. - Select rectangle, freeform, window, or full-screen capture.
- Click the notification to open the result in Snipping Tool.
- Use Save to write the image to a known folder.
If nothing appears, open Start, search for Snipping Tool, and launch it manually. If the app opens but the shortcut does not, another utility may have taken over the keyboard combination. Temporarily exit clipboard managers, keyboard remappers, overlay software, and remote-desktop tools, then try again.
3. Test Xbox Game Bar for app or game capture
- Open Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar.
- Turn on the option that allows Xbox Game Bar to open with the controller button or shortcut.
- Focus the app or game you want to record.
- Press
Win+G. If the Game Bar appears, select the Capture widget. - Press
Win+Alt+Rto start and stop recording. - Check
Videos\\Capturesfor the MP4 file.
Game Bar is designed for an app or game window. It may refuse to record the Windows desktop, File Explorer, or protected video content. For an arbitrary desktop region, use Snipping Tool instead.
4. Update Windows capture apps
Snipping Tool and Xbox Game Bar are delivered through Windows and Microsoft Store components. Open Microsoft Store, select Library, and choose Check for updates. Restart Windows after updates finish, then repeat the shortcut test.
5. Repair or reset the affected app
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Snipping Tool or Xbox Game Bar.
- Open the three-dot menu, choose Advanced options, and select Repair.
- Test capture again.
- If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, select Reset, then test again.
Repair attempts to fix the app while preserving its data. Reset removes the app’s stored data and preferences. These options are not available for every Windows app.
6. Check graphics-driver symptoms
A black capture, flickering display, corrupted frames, or a screen that turns black while recording can indicate a graphics-driver problem. Press Win+Ctrl+Shift+B to reset the graphics driver. The screen may blink and a beep may sound.
If the problem returns, open Device Manager > Display adapters and check the adapter’s driver. Install a current driver from your PC or GPU manufacturer, or roll back a driver if the failure began immediately after an update. Also check for incompatible overlays and capture utilities.
7. Check permissions, storage, and recording limits
- Make sure the destination drive has free space. A recording can start and then stop when the drive fills.
- In Settings > Gaming > Captures, verify the capture folder and recording settings.
- Close applications that use exclusive full-screen or protected video surfaces.
- For microphone problems, check Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and enable access for the capture app.
- For a laptop with two GPUs, force the capture app and target game to use the same graphics processor in Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
8. Escalate with Windows recovery
If both capture tools fail after updates, app repair, and driver checks, the problem may involve damaged Windows components.
Use Fix problems using Windows Update first
Open Settings > System > Recovery and choose Fix problems using Windows Update when it is available. This reinstalls the same Windows version, repairs system files and components, and preserves apps, files, and settings. Keep the PC connected to power and allow the process to finish.
Use Reset this PC only after backing up
Reset this PC is more disruptive. Microsoft provides a Keep my files option that preserves personal files while removing apps and settings, but you should still back up important files and record application license details first.
Common errors and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
Win+Shift+S does nothing |
Snipping Tool is damaged, shortcut is intercepted, or Windows shell is stuck | Launch Snipping Tool manually, update Store apps, repair the app, and close shortcut utilities |
| Snip notification appears but no file is saved | The image is only copied or open in the editor | Open the notification and select Save; choose a writable folder |
Win+G does not open |
Xbox Game Bar is disabled or not installed correctly | Enable it in Settings, update Microsoft Store, then repair or reset the app |
| Game Bar capture buttons are greyed out | Target is unsupported, protected, or not recognized as an app/game | Focus a supported app or game; use Snipping Tool for desktop regions |
| Recording starts and immediately stops | Insufficient disk space, driver failure, or protected content | Free storage, reset the graphics driver, update the driver, and test another app |
| Video is black or flickers | Graphics-driver or overlay conflict | Press Win+Ctrl+Shift+B, update or roll back the driver, and disable overlays |
| No microphone audio | Microphone permission or wrong input device | Allow microphone access and select the intended input in Windows sound settings |
| Capture works in one account only | Per-user app data or settings are corrupted | Repair or reset the app; compare settings in a test Windows account |
Performance and reliability checklist
- Use Snipping Tool for a single region or short clip; use Game Bar for sustained app or game recording.
- Close overlays and unnecessary background recorders to reduce conflicts.
- Record to a fast drive with ample free space.
- Keep Windows, Microsoft Store apps, and graphics drivers current.
- After changing a driver or capture setting, make a short test recording before an important session.
- For repeatable website screenshots, use a fixed viewport, explicit wait condition, and deterministic output format.
Or skip the browser setup
If the thing you need is a website screenshot rather than a Windows desktop recording, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture steps can accept cookie banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options, including full-page capture, CSS selectors, device presets, dark mode, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, blocking rules, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs, webhooks, bulk capture, and usage data.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots; 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
FAQ
Why does Win+Shift+S work but Win+G fail?
They belong to different tools. Win+Shift+S invokes Snipping Tool, while Win+G invokes Xbox Game Bar, which must be enabled and generally targets an app or game.
Where are Game Bar screenshots and recordings?
By default, Windows stores them in Videos\\Captures. You can change the capture location from Windows capture settings.
Will Reset this PC delete my personal files?
The Keep my files option preserves personal files but removes apps and settings. Back up important data before any reset.
Can a display-driver reset damage my recording?
The shortcut restarts the graphics driver and may interrupt the current capture. Use it as a troubleshooting step, then make a short test recording.
