How to Fix Webpage PDFs That Save Only the First Screen

If a webpage PDF contains only the first screen, check the print preview first. These steps help find whether the issue is the page, browser, or selected print range.

If a PDF of a long webpage contains only the first screen, open the browser’s print preview and inspect it before changing settings. Check the preview’s page count and scroll through the preview. If the preview itself stops early, investigate the selected page range, the page’s print layout, or how the page loads. If the preview contains all the content but the saved PDF does not, save again and inspect the new file in another PDF viewer; the available documentation does not point to one universal cause for that difference.

A browser prints a webpage using its print workflow, which can render a different layout from the screen version. The first useful distinction is whether content is missing from the preview or only from the saved file. Chrome’s print instructions describe opening the print dialog and choosing a destination and settings; Firefox’s guide documents a preview and Save to PDF destination.

1. Check whether the preview is already truncated

  1. Open the webpage and invoke Print: use Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+P on Mac. In Chrome, File > Print also opens the workflow; Firefox and Edge provide Print from their menus.
  2. Choose a PDF destination, such as Save to PDF where available. In Firefox, Save to PDF saves the preview shown.
  3. Check the page selection. Choose all pages, not a selected range or current page.
  4. Scroll through the preview and note its page count and last visible paragraph. Do this before saving.
  5. Save, open the PDF, and compare its page count and last paragraph with the preview.

If the preview ends after one page: the PDF destination is likely saving what the print renderer prepared. Continue with the site-specific and simplified-rendering checks below. If the preview has multiple pages but the file does not: save again, confirm the destination and page range, and open the result in another PDF viewer. This comparison narrows down where the discrepancy appears; it does not by itself identify a single cause.

2. Tell missing content from missing backgrounds

Look at what is absent. If paragraphs below the first screen are gone, background graphics are not the fix. If the text is present but background colors, decorative images, or other visual styling are missing, enable the browser’s background-print option. Edge calls it Background graphics; Firefox calls it Print backgrounds. Microsoft’s Edge print guide describes including background graphics when the preview or output looks different from the webpage.

When text or tables are clipped at page edges, try paper size, orientation, margins, and scale one at a time while watching the preview. Firefox lists paper size, scale, margins, pages per sheet, headers and footers, and backgrounds under More settings. Smaller scale may fit more content on a page but also makes text harder to read; inspect the final page breaks before saving. These settings adjust fit and appearance. They do not restore content that the preview never rendered.

3. Try a simplified or reading view for a page-specific problem

If another page prints fully but this one does not, the original page’s layout or print-specific styling may be involved. Web authors can use print styles that deliberately change what appears on paper or in a PDF; MDN’s printing guide explains print stylesheets and the @media print and @page rules.

  • Firefox: open Print, expand More settings, and choose Simplified format if it is available. Compare the result with the original page. Firefox notes that Print backgrounds cannot be selected in Simplified format.
  • Edge: if the page offers Immersive Reader, open it and try printing that version. Microsoft notes that not every website is eligible.

A simpler view can change or omit layout elements, so it is a diagnostic alternative, not necessarily a visually identical copy. Mozilla documents the available format options in its Firefox printing guide; Microsoft documents the reading-view troubleshooting step in its Edge troubleshooting guide.

4. Isolate the page, browser, and system

  1. Print a different webpage in the same browser with the same destination and settings. If that works, the original page or its print layout may be involved.
  2. Try the original page in another browser. If it works there, the difference may be browser-specific.
  3. If you are using an actual printer as part of the comparison, print a normal document from another application. If that also fails, investigate the printer driver, operating system, connectivity, or hardware.
  4. Change one setting at a time and repeat the preview check so you can tell which change mattered.

Microsoft’s troubleshooting guide lists the website or document, Edge, printer driver, Windows, and connectivity or hardware as possible sources. It recommends testing other websites and documents, then other applications, to narrow down the issue. It also cautions that a driver can affect Edge differently from other programs. If Edge reports “Print preview failed,” retrying the dialog or restarting Edge is relevant to that preview error; those steps are not a guaranteed fix for every truncated PDF.

5. Verify the saved PDF

After saving, check the PDF itself—not just the thumbnail. Confirm:

  • Its page count is plausible for the length of the webpage.
  • The last expected heading or paragraph appears.
  • Important tables, links, and images are present and readable.
  • The page range and destination were correct.

If it remains incomplete, record the browser and operating system, the page URL, whether the preview was also incomplete, whether another webpage printed successfully, and whether another application printed successfully. That information makes a support report more actionable. Microsoft asks users reporting Edge print problems to include the affected website or document and the steps taken.

Browser-specific print steps

Browser Open print Useful options
Chrome desktop File > Print, Ctrl+P on Windows/Linux, or Command+P on Mac. Choose a PDF destination and inspect the preview and page selection. The official Chrome guide confirms the general destination-and-settings workflow.
Firefox Menu > Print. Choose Save to PDF. More settings may include paper size, scale, pages per sheet, margins, Original or Simplified format, headers and footers, and backgrounds. See Mozilla’s current guide.
Microsoft Edge Menu > Print, Ctrl+P on Windows, or Command+P on Mac. Check pages, margins, scale, and Background graphics. Edge also documents the system print dialog. See Microsoft’s print guide.
Safari Use Safari’s Print command and inspect its preview. Dialog names and options vary by platform. The research for this guide did not confirm current Apple-specific steps, so check the options shown in your version rather than relying on labels from another browser.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely area to check What to try
Preview and PDF both contain only one screen or page Page selection, page rendering, or site-specific print layout. Check that all pages are selected; try a simplified or reading view if available; compare another webpage.
Preview has all pages, saved PDF does not Destination, selected range, or a discrepancy during saving/viewing. Save again, confirm all pages and the PDF destination, and open the new file in another viewer.
Text continues, but backgrounds or decorative images are absent Background printing is off. Enable Background graphics in Edge or Print backgrounds in Firefox. This setting concerns appearance, not missing lower-page text.
Content is cut off at the sides or page breaks are poor Paper size, orientation, margins, or scale. Adjust one setting at a time and inspect legibility and page breaks in preview.
Only one site fails That page’s content or print styling may be involved. Compare another page and try a reading or simplified view. A page can intentionally use different print styles.
Several sites and other applications fail to print Printer driver, operating system, hardware, or connectivity. Test another application and check the printer connection and driver. If using a PDF destination, compare behavior in another browser as well.
Edge says “Print preview failed” Preview or destination availability. Retry the print dialog or restart Edge. Microsoft also recommends checking or selecting another printer when the selected one is unavailable.

Microsoft notes that “A website or document may have damaged graphics, fonts, or code that can be the cause of the print issue.” See Troubleshoot print issues in Microsoft Edge for its diagnostic sequence.

Performance, reliability, and what a PDF preserves

Print preview is the cheapest first check: it tells you whether the browser has paginated the content before you spend time retrying saves. Large or complex pages can take longer to render, and content that appears only after scrolling or interaction may not be represented as expected by a print layout. If the page is still loading, wait for its content before opening Print and compare the preview after it settles.

A browser-generated PDF is generally suited to paginated reading and may preserve selectable text and links, depending on the page and browser output. A screenshot is a visual image of a viewport or page capture; it is not interchangeable with a document when you need searchable text, links, or page-by-page reading. For an important record, verify the saved artifact and retain the source URL and capture date. A reading mode can improve simplicity but change the presentation; background printing can improve visual fidelity but does not repair missing content.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. For a visual capture, one GET request returns an image or PDF. The example below saves an image response as a file; it is useful when you need a visual record, while a browser print-to-PDF workflow remains appropriate when you need the browser’s paginated document output. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" \
  -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY \
  --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com \
  -o shot.webp
import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({
  access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY',
  url: 'https://stripe.com'
});
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
const bytes = new Uint8Array(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', bytes));

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, and every feature is on every plan. For an API request, keep your key private, use a suitable timeout, and check the response before treating the file as a successful capture.

FAQ

Why does printing show fewer pages than scrolling the webpage?

The print layout can differ from the screen layout, and a site can apply print-specific CSS. Check the preview and try a simplified view if the browser offers one.

Will enabling background graphics bring back missing paragraphs?

No. Background settings control visual backgrounds. If text below the first screen is absent, inspect page selection and preview rendering instead.

Should I install a webpage-to-PDF extension?

Start with the browser’s built-in print preview and test the affected page. Results can vary by site; an extension is not a guaranteed fix for every print layout.

When should I use a screenshot instead of print-to-PDF?

Use a screenshot when you need a visual record of how a page appears. Use a browser-generated PDF when you need paginated reading and potentially searchable text and links.
