How to Fix WhatsApp Link Previews Not Showing

WhatsApp link previews missing? Check the outgoing-link privacy setting first, then narrow down whether the issue affects sent or received links.

If WhatsApp does not show a preview for links you send, check Disable link previews first. Open Settings (or your profile picture) > Privacy > Advanced. If Disable link previews is enabled, turn it off and send the link again. WhatsApp says this option is off by default and affects previews for links you send, not previews for links you receive.

WhatsApp describes this control as an optional security measure that helps protect the sender’s IP address. It also says receiving previews does not affect the recipient’s IP address. See the WhatsApp Help Center for the current wording in your app version.

The documented setting only controls previews on links you send. It is not a fix for a preview missing from a link someone else sent you.

Situation What to check
Your sent links have no preview Check Disable link previews under Privacy > Advanced.
A received link has no preview Do not change the outgoing-link setting as a confirmed fix; record the exact link, platform and app version for further diagnosis.
Only one link is affected Record that specific URL and whether the problem occurs on one device or more. The available WhatsApp guidance does not establish the cause.
Every link is affected Record whether this is on Android, iPhone, desktop or web, plus the app version. These details narrow the report but are not themselves documented WhatsApp fixes.
  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Open Settings. On some versions, you can reach settings from your profile picture.
  3. Choose Privacy.
  4. Open Advanced.
  5. Find Disable link previews.
  6. If it is on, switch it off.
  7. Send the link again in a new message and check whether a preview appears.

Menu names and availability can vary by WhatsApp version. The supported fact is the location WhatsApp documents: Settings or profile picture > Privacy > Advanced.

3. Troubleshoot without assuming an unsupported cause

If the setting is already off, the supplied WhatsApp material does not establish a complete list of website, URL, app, device or network causes. Use this triage record before changing other systems:

  • Direction: are you sending the link or receiving it?
  • Scope: is one URL affected or all URLs?
  • Platform: Android, iPhone, desktop app or WhatsApp Web?
  • Version: which WhatsApp app version is installed?
  • Reproduction: does sending the same URL again produce the same result?

Do not present changing website metadata, restarting a phone, switching networks, reinstalling WhatsApp, URL shorteners or cache refreshes as confirmed remedies from this source set. They may be suggested elsewhere, but they are not established by the retrieved WhatsApp guidance.

4. Privacy trade-off

Disabling previews is an optional advanced privacy control. WhatsApp says it is intended to protect the sender’s IP address and that personal messages remain end-to-end encrypted. Turning the control off allows previews for links you send. WhatsApp also says receiving previews has no impact on the recipient’s IP address.

5. Inspect the page yourself before changing WhatsApp settings

If you own the linked page, capture it in a browser and inspect what a visitor sees. A full-page capture can reveal blank states, consent dialogs, delayed content or overlays that make a page difficult to review. This inspection does not prove why WhatsApp omitted a preview; it simply gives you a reproducible view of the page.

For a local browser workflow, open the URL in a normal browser, wait for the page to finish rendering, and save a screenshot. Record the URL, timestamp, viewport and whether a consent banner or popup was visible so another person can reproduce the observation.

6. Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts and cache hits are not billed. Responses identify the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf.

Read the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

You can choose full-page or element captures, wait for a selector, delay or network idle, apply custom CSS or JavaScript, hide selectors, set a device or viewport, and block selected requests. 7. Common errors and fixes

Symptom Likely interpretation Action supported by the evidence
