Fluxguard screenshots are blank: how to troubleshoot

Find out whether Fluxguard saved a blank capture or its comparison viewer looks wrong, then check filters, scripts, timing, access, and fresh crawl data.

If a Fluxguard screenshot looks blank, first check whether the saved screenshot itself is empty or only the comparison/version viewer appears blank. Fluxguard says that viewer loads captured HTML in iframes and removes JavaScript and some other resources, which can change interactive content. For a genuinely blank or incomplete capture, check Inclusion Filters, review exclusions and access controls, allow slow pages more time, then manually start a fresh crawl and inspect its screenshot, HTML, extracted text, and network activity.

1. Confirm which artifact is blank

Open the exact page version and inspect the archived screenshot separately from the side-by-side comparison or rendered viewer. Fluxguard documents headless Google Chrome captures after JavaScript execution, while its comparison viewer uses iframes and removes JavaScript and some other resources. A viewer that looks empty therefore does not establish that the saved screenshot is empty.

Compare the archived screenshot with the captured HTML or rendered DOM, extracted text, and network activity. If those contain the expected content while only the comparison display is wrong, investigate the viewer representation before changing crawl settings. Fluxguard says Viewer Helper CSS, under Session Settings → General → Advanced, can force some areas to stay open when content is hidden behind an interactive element.

Fluxguard’s initial crawl baseline includes a screenshot, complete HTML, extracted text, and a HAR network profile. These artifacts help distinguish a visual rendering problem from a page that was never captured or loaded.

2. Check Inclusion Filters and selectors

If the blank result involves an Inclusion Filter, verify that its selector still matches an element on the live page. Fluxguard documents a blank alert in this case as meaning that no Inclusion Filter matched: the filter could be configured incorrectly, or the target area may be missing.

  1. Open the page in a browser and use developer tools to inspect the intended content element.
  2. Confirm that the selector matches the element on the current page, not just an older layout.
  3. Simplify long hierarchical selectors to a stable core selector where possible. Fluxguard warns that deeply nested selectors can break when page scaffolding changes.
  4. Save the filter and manually crawl again. Check the new screenshot and captured artifacts.

Do not assume the content disappeared merely because a selector no longer matches. Page redesigns, changed class names, localization, or content that loads conditionally can all make an old selector stop identifying the intended region. The new crawl is the verification step.

Fluxguard’s Exclusion Filters remove matching areas from the DOM before capture. Review recent filter changes and network-block settings for the affected page or session, especially exclusions that match script tags or assets needed to build the page.

Fluxguard gives excluding all script tags as an example that may prevent scripts from executing and stop a page from fully rendering. If the site is a single-page application or builds its content with JavaScript, removing scripts can leave little or nothing to capture.

Distinguish Exclusion Filters from Selector Ignores. Fluxguard documents Selector Ignores as operating after capture for HTML comparisons: they can omit noisy markup from change evaluation while preserving the captured area. If the goal is to ignore a region during comparison, check whether a post-capture ignore is appropriate instead of removing that region before capture.

4. Give slow pages more time

Fluxguard says its automatic timing techniques can be imperfect on slow or complex sites. Add a wait, then manually crawl again to see whether the page finishes rendering.

  • All pages in a session: Open Session Settings → Crawl → Advanced and adjust “Wait Before Capturing.” Fluxguard documents up to nine additional seconds, configurable before or after other actions.
  • One affected page: Add a page-level Wait action in Page View.

Use this when the saved capture or network activity indicates that required content arrives late. If a longer wait does not change the screenshot, return to selector, script, resource, and access checks rather than continually increasing the delay.

5. Check crawler access and required resources

If the site has a firewall, bot control, authentication, or edge protection, confirm that Fluxguard’s crawler can reach the page and its required assets. Fluxguard provides crawler-whitelisting guidance for edge protection systems. This is a diagnostic possibility, not evidence that access controls caused any particular blank capture.

Look at the fresh crawl’s network activity for failed or blocked document, script, stylesheet, image, or font requests. Check whether a login wall, consent gate, bot challenge, or access rule is returning different content to the crawler. Where access needs to change, use the site’s supported crawler-whitelisting or authentication configuration and then run another crawl to verify.

6. Use a fresh crawl to isolate the cause

After each setting change, manually initiate a crawl and compare it with the prior version. Change one relevant setting at a time so the result shows which adjustment helped.

What you observe Likely area to investigate Next check
Archived screenshot has content; comparison viewer looks empty Viewer representation or interactive content Inspect captured HTML and try Viewer Helper CSS for content hidden in the viewer.
Inclusion-filtered result is blank Selector mismatch or missing target element Inspect the live element, simplify and validate the selector, then crawl again.
Many pages in one session are incomplete Session-level wait, shared filter, or shared access setting Review session settings and recent shared filter or network-block changes.
One page is incomplete, and content arrives late Page-level timing or page-specific behavior Add a page-level Wait action and inspect the next crawl’s network activity.
HTML or text is present but the screenshot is visually empty Visual rendering, styles, assets, or viewer Compare the archived image with HTML and network activity; check required CSS, scripts, and fonts.
HTML and extracted text are also empty Page access, navigation, filter, or load failure Check the requested page, crawler access, filters, and network failures in the new crawl.

Fluxguard exposes text, rendered DOM/HTML, pixel screenshots, and network activity in its comparison tools. Using more than the screenshot alone helps tell an empty page from a missing asset or a viewer-only discrepancy.

7. Troubleshooting checklist

  • Am I looking at the archived screenshot or only a comparison/version display?
  • Does the exact Inclusion Filter selector still match the intended live element?
  • Did a recent Exclusion Filter remove scripts or other rendering-critical content?
  • Did network-block settings or access restrictions prevent the document or required assets from loading?
  • Does the page need a session-level or page-level wait?
  • After the change, did I manually start a fresh crawl and inspect screenshot, HTML, text, and network data?

8. Troubleshooting common symptoms

The comparison view is blank, but the archived screenshot is not

The viewer may represent interactive content differently because it removes JavaScript and some other resources. Check the saved screenshot and captured HTML for the exact version. If content is hidden behind an interactive element in the viewer, Fluxguard’s Viewer Helper CSS may help keep some areas open.

An Inclusion Filter produces a blank result

Fluxguard says this means no Inclusion Filter matched. The selector may no longer fit the page, or the target area may be absent. Inspect the live page, simplify a brittle selector, and run a new crawl.

The page is mostly empty after a filter change

An Exclusion Filter may have removed content or scripts needed for rendering. Review recent changes, particularly broad script exclusions. If the intent is only to ignore markup during HTML comparison, consider the documented post-capture Selector Ignores behavior.

The page is incomplete, but finishes loading in a normal browser

The page may need more capture time, or the crawler may not be able to reach a required resource. Add a session or page-level wait as appropriate, then inspect network activity and access controls on the next crawl.

A longer wait changes nothing

Timing is only one possible cause. Recheck selector matches, exclusions, blocked resources, authentication, bot controls, and whether you are inspecting the saved artifact or the comparison viewer.

9. Or skip the browser setup

For a separate screenshot capture or a quick comparison, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API. One GET request returns an image or PDF, and its API accepts parameter names used by other screenshot APIs. The call below captures Stripe as WebP; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers say the page verdict and whether it was billed. Its MCP server offers screenshot tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. 10. FAQ

Does a blank Fluxguard comparison prove the crawl failed?

No. Check the archived screenshot and captured HTML for that version; the comparison viewer removes JavaScript and some other resources.

Should I increase the wait for every blank capture?

No. Add time when the evidence points to slow rendering. A selector mismatch, removed script, blocked asset, access restriction, or viewer behavior needs a different fix.

Can I tell whether a selector is the problem without changing the page?

Inspect the intended element in browser developer tools, validate a simple selector against the current page, and confirm with a new crawl.

Does ScreenshotNeo diagnose my Fluxguard session?

No. It is a separate screenshot API and MCP server; use Fluxguard’s captured artifacts and session settings to troubleshoot that crawl.
