How to Take a Full-Page Screenshot in Chrome on a Chromebook

Capture an entire webpage in Chrome on a Chromebook with DevTools, and learn when the built-in Screen Capture tool is the right choice.

To capture an entire webpage—including the part below the visible screen—use Chrome DevTools: open Device Mode, open its More options menu, and choose Capture a full size screenshot. The Chromebook’s built-in Screen Capture tool captures the display, a selected region, or a window; it is not the same as capturing the whole scrollable webpage.

Capture the whole webpage with Chrome DevTools

  1. Open the webpage in Chrome and let it load. If it relies on content that appears as you scroll, scroll through the page first so you can check whether that content appears in the capture.
  2. Open DevTools with Ctrl+Shift+I. You can also open Chrome’s menu and look under More tools for DevTools.
  3. Turn on Device Mode in DevTools.
  4. Open Device Mode’s More options menu.
  5. Select Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome documents this command for capturing the whole page, including content outside the viewport. Chrome DevTools: Simulate mobile devices with device mode.
  6. Open the resulting image from Chrome’s downloads or the folder configured for downloads. The save location depends on your Chrome settings.

Open the saved image and inspect it before sharing. Pages with changing content, lazy-loaded images, or sign-in requirements may not look identical in every capture; the page’s state and the resulting image are worth checking.

Choose the right Chromebook screenshot method

Method What it captures Use it when
Chromebook Screen Capture The display, a selected region, or a window You need an image of what is currently visible on screen.
Chrome DevTools Device Mode The webpage’s full scrollable content You need the page below the visible viewport too.

For a quick capture of an app window or visible content, use the Chromebook tool. For a complete webpage, use DevTools’ full-size screenshot command. Google’s Chromebook stylus instructions use the phrase “full-page screenshot” for capturing the device screen; that does not describe a scrolling webpage capture. Capture only what is on the Chromebook display

When you want the visible screen rather than an entire scrolling webpage, use one of these documented routes:

  • Press the Chromebook’s screenshot key if the keyboard has one.
  • Use Shift+Ctrl+Show windows, or open Settings > Screen Capture.
  • On an external keyboard without a Show windows key, use Ctrl+Shift+F5.

Choose full-screen, partial, or window capture in the Screen Capture controls. Screenshots are saved to Downloads by default; you can change the destination in Screen Capture settings. These choices capture the display, not the full page beyond the viewport.

Other DevTools screenshot commands

Chrome DevTools also has a Command Menu. On Linux or Windows, open it with Ctrl+Shift+P; the menu includes screenshot commands such as area capture. This is separate from the Device Mode menu’s Capture a full size screenshot option. See Chrome DevTools Command Menu.

Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause What to do
The screenshot stops at the visible screen. You used Chromebook Screen Capture or a viewport screenshot command. In Device Mode, choose Capture a full size screenshot from More options.
You cannot find Device Mode’s menu. Device Mode is not enabled, or you are looking in a different DevTools menu. Turn on Device Mode, then open its More options menu. The full-size command is documented there.
Images or other content are missing. The page may load content dynamically or as you scroll. Wait for the page to settle, scroll through it if needed, capture again, and inspect the result. Behavior can vary by page.
The captured page shows a sign-in screen or different content. The page state or access requirements affect what Chrome can see. Sign in if appropriate, confirm the intended page is open, then capture and review the image.
You cannot locate the saved image. Chrome’s download destination may have been changed. Check Chrome’s downloads and configured download location. For the built-in capture, check Downloads or the folder set in Screen Capture settings.

Or skip the browser setup
